www.nestlearning.com Christopher Columbus (1451-May 20, 1506) was an Italian navigator and explorer credited with the discovery of the Americas. A man of great leadership and courage, he often used "converting non-believers" as a reason for his explorations. Christopher Columbus believed that instead of sailing east on the path to find India that land could be reached in just weeks by sailing west! His voyages across the Atlantic Ocean began an effort at exploration and colonization of the Western Hemisphere. After securing the support of Queen Isabella of Spain, he finally set sail for the new world. After three weeks of sailing and no sight of land, his crew threatened mutiny. But at the moment when all seemed lost, land was discovered!

Christopher Columbus (c. 31 October 1451 -- 20 May 1506) was an explorer, colonizer, and navigator, born in the Republic of Genoa, in northwestern Italy. Under the auspices of the Catholic Monarchs of Spain, he completed four voyages across the Atlantic Ocean that led to general European awareness of the American continents in the Western Hemisphere.

Christopher Columbus - Another video clip from the Drive Thru History series and my friends at www.ColdWaterMedia.com Christopher Columbus was born in 1451 in beautiful Genoa, Italy. He was raised in the shadows of medieval gates behind him and the open sea in front of him -- the perfect backdrop for a boy looking for adventure. Christopher's father was a respectable middle-class man who made a career of weaving wool. But Columbus had bigger plans than spending his life working with sheep fur. He had heard the call of the ocean, the lure of the sea. Christopher Columbus set about learning his trade as a teenager, traveling the trade routes across Europe and becoming an expert in navigation. He may have also helped with a bit of "privateering" in the war against the Moors. Although Christopher Columbus reached his goal of becoming a sea captain, he was not content to simply follow the traditional trade routes and make a nice living. No, he had big plans, and he was willing to risk everything to make them a reality. During this period, land trade between India, China, and Europe dwindled, because the Muslims had effectively created a blockade of the trade routes, including the famous Silk Road. Many Europeans were wondering, "How do we solve this trade problem?" Along comes a mathematician named Paolo Toscanelli, toiling away quietly at a cathedral in Florence, Italy, who proposes a new theory of reaching the East by sailing west. Then along comes Christopher Columbus, who ...

His composition "Christopher Columbus" was the last important hit recording of Fletcher Henderon's orchestra, recorded in 1936. It is one of the most popular riff tunes from the swing era and used as the final showstopper in Benny Goodman's first Carnegy Hall Jazz concert dating from 1938. Berry also played for a while in the Count Basie Big band. Born in Wheeling, West Virginia, he is perhaps best known for his tenor saxophone work with Cab Calloway's Cotton Club Orchestra. Prior to joining Calloway's orchestra, Berry worked with Sammy Stewart, Benny Carter, Teddy Hill, and Fletcher Henderson. Though Berry based his style on that followed by Coleman Hawkins, the older man regarded Berry as his equal. Berry died in Conneaut, Ohio from injuries sustained from an automobile accident. [edit] Trivia "Chu Berry" is also the unofficial name of a series of saxophones produced by the CG Conn company during the 1920s. Berry played a tenor model that was built during this era, though saxophone collectors often use "Chu Berry" in ...

An amateur researcher embarks on a quest to officially establish Christopher Columbus' Portuguese roots, only to find his thirst for knowledge overpowering his initial mission in this historical drama from writer/director Manoel de Oliveira. The year was 1946, and America was the land of opportunity. Siblings Manuel and Herminio Da Silva (Ricardo and Jorge Trepa) immigrate to the United States to seek their fortune, Manuel quickly realizing his dream of becoming a doctor. Years later, after returning to his homeland of Portugal to marry lifetime love Sylvia (Leonor Baldaque), the ambitious physician becomes convinced that Columbus hailed not from Genoa, Italy, but the Portuguese town of Cuba instead. As Manuel and Sylvia set sail to prove his hypothesis once and for all, a once-singular mission quickly expands to encompass a vast sea of potential knowledge. moviewall.blogspot.com - Movie Posters, Wallpapers & Trailers

A history day project explaining the conflict and compromise of the interations between native Arawak Indians and Columbus. Conflict also occurred when the Indians tried to defend themselves; Columbus captured the natives and either used them as slaves or had them killed. The compromise in this situation was that the Arawaks were able to help Columbus and his men by showing them how to survive in this foreign land while Columbus supplied the indigenous people with new technology and introduced them to Christianity. Although in the beginning the Spanish were very dependent on the cooperation and help from the Arawak Indians, in the end the Spanish completely conquered the new land while the Arawaks were unable to survive.
