the curious case of Becket Quarry
In this video, the silent camera wanders on the trails of Becket Quarry in the Commonwealth of Massachusetts. The trip starts on the trails leading to the Electrical Generator Shed(post #7) followed by Stiff Arm Derrick Site(post #8) before wandering for a while on Vista trail & Old Motion loop. Afterwards, you will see Post #10(Motion),the hill leading to Post #12(Switch & portable compressor), posts # 13 & 14(Stiff Arm Derrick site) which overlook the quarry rim/pit. The quarry crane has been restored and may be seen against the blue skies. The camera then heads to Post #9(Railgrade to Motion) passing through the shed. Post #5 follows(two trucks even though one truck only appears on the video). The camera then pauses at Post #6(Guy Derrick Site). Becket quarry was operational between 1860 & 1960 & was known as the Chester-Hudson Quarry. The interwebs says it had an essential role in building the town of Becket and many monuments in the country. The quarry was abandoned & the equipment left intact as if the workers went on a lunch break & never made it back afterwards. A project we produced for the Walla Walla University Fast Film Festival. We had 48 hours to write, film, and edit a short film, and it had to include an iron and the ASWWU logo. California DIY, shipping container tiny home and a cargo trailer bedroom
Lulu is a single mom who'd gone back to school and didn't have the time or interest in working full-time to pay for rent. So when she had to move out of her more conventional home, she decided to move herself and her daughter into a shipping container. With no building experience, Lulu spent just one month cutting windows and a door and installing insulation and a basic kitchen (complete with propane-powered campstove and on-demand water heater). Then she and her daughter moved into the 8 by 20 foot square foot home, fitting a bed, couch, bookshelf and kitchen cabinets into the 160 square foot box. When Lulu decided they needed a bit more space, she went from shipping to trucking waste and began to build their bedroom on a used flatbed trailer. "It's really mostly built like a shed. It's a nice looking shed, but it's really an 8 by 16 shed with windows in it." Using only recycled building materials- including used floorboards, windows, cabinets, doors, bathtub, toilet and sinks- she built the entire thing for about $4000 (trailer included).
