Just in time for Christmas, the 2011 Mercedes C-Class has leaked to the web ahead of its debut at North American International Auto Show. Destined to recapture the entry-level luxury spotlight, the updated model features a new front fascia, an aluminum hood, and restyled headlights. Out back, changes are relatively minor but include a revised bumper and LED tail lights. While the exterior tweaks are somewhat questionable, the interior has been completely revamped to mimic the E-Class. Notable changes include a new dashboard, a revised steering wheel (from the CLS), updated controls, and a redesigned instrument cluster. Furthermore, thanks to a generous helping of aluminum (or wood) trim, the cabin no longer is a sea of black plastic. In the tech department, there are five new driver assistance options (Attention Assist, Adaptive Highbeam Assist, Park Assist, Lane Keeping Assist, and Blind Spot Assist) and an updated COMAND system. Under the hood, three engines will be available in the United States. The big news is the addition of a turbocharged 1.8-liter four-cylinder with 201 hp (204 PS / 150kW) and 229 lb-ft (310 Nm) of torque. It enables the sedan to accelerate from 0-60 mpg in 7.1 seconds and return a combined 24 mpg. Alternatively, the C350 adopts the new 3.5-liter V6 which churns out 302 hp (225 kW / 306 PS) and 273 lb-ft (370 Nm) of torque. On August 9, 2011 beginning at 3:48 AM EDT, the sun emitted an Earth-directed X6.9 flare, as measured by the NOAA GOES satellite. These gigantic bursts of radiation cannot pass through Earth's atmosphere to harm humans on the ground, however they can disrupt the atmosphere and disrupt GPS and communications signals. In this case, it appears the flare is strong enough that it could cause some radio communication blackouts. It also produced increased solar energetic proton radiation -- enough to affect humans in space if they do not protect themselves. There was also a coronal mass ejection (CME) associated with the flare. CMEs are another solar phenomenon that can send solar particles into space and affect electronic systems in satellites and on Earth. However, this CME is not traveling toward Earth and should not affect it. The Mercedes-Benz W123 cars were produced from 1976 through 1985. The W123 models surpassed their predecessor, the W114/W115 "stroke-8" models, as the most successful Mercedes, selling over 2.5 million cars, before being replaced by the W124 after 1985. Also, the additional, smaller range of Mercedes-Benz W201 models was introduced in 1982. As usual, model names were related to engine sizes, type of engine and chassis type • D for Diesel, • E for Einspritzung (fuel injection) • Lang for Long Wheelbase • T for Transport and Tourism (estate/station wagon) • C for Coupé Mercedes-Benz introduced the W123 four-door versions in January, 1976[2]. While there was some technical similarities to their predecessors, the new models were larger in wheelbase and exterior dimensions. The styling was also updated, although stylistic links with the /8 while were maintained. Initially, all models except 280/280E featured quad unequal-size round headlights and the latter large rectangular units. When facelifted these units became standard across the range. All /8 engines were carried over, with the 3 liter 5-cylinder diesel model being renamed from 240D 3.0 to 300D (as it had already been called before in North American markets).
