Buddy Rich vs Vinnie Colaiuta

Leave a comment for your favourite drummer, Buddy or Vinnie? I know its going to be hard... More drum battles comming soon! www.ratemydrums.com Share and be Inspired. The question a lot of you are asking is "Is it right to compare two great artists?" There are two ways of looking at it; the first way is drummer "A" vs. drummer "B" and asking who is best or who would win a competition? I believe this is wrong as neither drummer asked to be judged or entered into a competition. This is NOT what I am trying to do. I will say it again; this is not a competition and not what I am trying to do. The other way of looking at it is one of advanced appreciation. Let me explain what I mean. Take a drummer like Danny Carey; do you enjoy his music on its own without anything to compare it to? Yes, I do. Now take a drummer like Mike Portnoy, can you enjoy his music on its own without any comparison? Yes, I also do. But if I want to know how much I enjoy either piece or either drummer I need something to compare it against. Our first natural comparison is with ourselves. "I like Danny Carey, and will pay money to see Danny because he is better than me". Fair statement? I don't see Danny Carey lining up to see my clinics. Why do most of us appreciate Danny's drummer more then say Larry Mullins Jr's drummer? Because it is further from where we are. A lot of us can play what Larry plays so we think of him as a good or great drummer, but with Danny being so far pasted us we often think of ...

www.joecrabtree.com Yet another Vinnie thing... I heard on a live version of Englishman in New York and had to work it out. It could come in useful in certain situations. It's certainly satisfying to play. I particularly like that it's a kind of standard 6 stroke roll sticking but playing the last 6 notes of an 8 note group. It's good practice starting licks in different places in the beat. I'm sure there's lots you could do to expand on that concept. Vinnie Colaiuta's playing on "Seven Days" by Nick Molenda

Vinnie Colaiuta Hello from Seattle! I hope you enjoy my best attempt at a note-for-note run on a truly great track originally played by one of my biggest drumming influences, Vinnie Colaiuta. The track is "Seven Days" from Sting's album Ten Summoner's Tales. More and more, I've been getting into doing note-for-note transcriptions of many musicians that have influenced my playing in one way or another. Not only has it been a tremendous learning experience for myself, but I thought that presenting it to everyone in this format would be helpful to other drummers who might be wanting to do the same thing. If you enjoy this video, please subscribe to my channel and share this video on Facebook/Twitter/etc. I'll be putting up more of these kinds of things in the near future for you all to check out. For more information, visit www.nickmolenda.com. You can also follow me on Twitter with @nmolenda. I'd sincerely appreciate any and all feedback you may have and look forward to connecting with many of you in the future! Vinnie Colaiuta's "Slink" by Roger "Kemp" Biwandu 5tet

Vinnie is my friend, but also one of my main influence, a real God for me. So when I recorded my 1st album titled "Influences" (that you can check out on iTunes, etc...), I decided to record that theme that he wrote for his only one solo album titled "Vinnie Colaiuta". I think that he wrote that song for Tony Williams, me I played that song for Vinnie, and he's been kind enough to send me some words about my work, so sweet from him : "Rodge, you sound really good on the whole album, and what a cool arrangement of my theme "Slink", I liked it and I was really honored that you did that !" Vinnie Colaiuta I hope you'll enjoy my work on that song, it was fun to play it, and a real pleasure to sending my love and respect to Vinnie for the endless inspiration he gives to me. Musicians are : - Nicolas Folmer (trumpet) - Hervé "Le Kian" Gourdikian (tenor sax) - Jean-Yves Jung (piano) - Rémi Vignolo (acoustic bass) - Roger "Kemp" Biwandu (leader, drums, arrangement) - David Felgeirolles (sound engineer)

Dog Cheese (Michael Landau, Vinnie Colaiuta, Steve Tavaglione, and Larry Klein)

Dog Cheese was a short lived mid 80's LA based band. The line-up was: Michael Landau - Guitar, Vinnie Colaiuta - Drums, Steve Tavaglione - Keys/Sax, and Larry Klein - Bass. Not too much is known about the band, but there are one or two live bootlegs floating around plus some studio demo material. This video is a bunch of Landau photos with a Dog Cheese track from the rare studio demo material. Michael Landau was interviewed by Abstract Logix in 2006, and was asked about the Dog Cheese band. This is what he had to say... Abstract Logix interviw with Michael Landau in 2006 (#95) AL: Mike, someone was telling me about a band you had with Vinnie Colaiuta called 'Dog Cheese', what was that all about? ML: "Dog Cheese" was put together right after Joni's '84 tour. It was Vinnie, Larry Klein, Steve Tavaglione and myself. We played original music that Larry and I wrote, and played around LA mostly at the "Baked Potato". There are some rough cassette's floating around of live shows, it was some pretty slammin stuff. We never did a record though... Its too bad. AL: Whats the probability that some of the rough tapes can be gotten hold off ? What was the material for Dog Cheese, were you guys taking some of Jonis compostions at all? ML: There just a stereo mike "walkman" recordings, too rough to put out... It was all original material by Larry, Steve & myself. ENJOY!

Great Drum Grooves 17 - Vinnie Colaiuta with Sting in "Seven Days"

Here's a real toe-tapper. (Nope! It's more of that "where'd the downbeat go?" odd-time stuff...) This song showcases Vinnie Colaiuta doing what he perhaps does best: playing in an odd time, and making it sound natural and easy. Does it sound natural and easy for me? Heck no! But this song, like my Elvin 3/4, simply *must* be included in my all-time favorite grooves list, even if out of my comfort zone. This groove is *that famous / revered / feared / etc.... What I play here is a kind of synthesis of the album version of the song, and what I've heard Vinnie do live or in clinic. The album version is a little more sparse. For example, that second bass drum note (on the and of "2") is not even present on the track; the BD's played only on "1." Vinnie also sometimes varies what he does with the hi-hat, depending on the section of the song, mood, whim, his boredom level, whatever.... So, you might hear him accent every 2nd HH quarter note, or open the hats every 2nd quarter note, or open them every 4th quarter note, or some combination of accents / opening. And by the way, I mean quarter note in the sense that I have it transcribed at the end of the video, equating to the *fast* 5 count, so that the bass drum is on 1 and cross-stick is on 4 in every measure. Sure, say the song is in 5/8 if you want, and I've heard both sides of the so-called debate, but... just as with "Saint Augustine In Hell", in 7, whether you think of it all as over 4, or over 8, has no practical *playing ...

Vinnie Colaiuta, John Patitucci, Chick Corea New Waltz

This is part 1 of the song "New Waltz"at the Blue Note Japan. Beautiful music played by three great musicians from 1992. I think Chick and John were both digging and feeling Vinnie out as they hadn't played together much as a trio to this point. Vinnie had committed to Sting and had recently come off a world tour with him prior to this. One can only imagine how these guys would have sounded if they had spent a lot of time together. Still pretty good cohesion between them though.
