Last year I shot some slow motion video at the New York Columbus Day Parade. When I saw the band play America The Beautiful at 40% speed it broke my heart. How can we let these kids celebrate a killer such as Columbus? I spent a lot of the last year reading about Columbus, often in his own words, and ruminating on what he did. Words fail me when I think of his cruelty, so I decided to make a video against celebrating him. Russell Means Speaking at the Transform Columbus Day Rally
Russell Means was just one of many speakers at the Four Directions/Transform Columbus Day Rally in Denver, CO. This is the first seven minutes of his eight-minute speech. The march evolved into a protest of the Columbus Day Parade which began 100 years ago in Denver. Protesters and organizers called for an end to the holiday that celebrates a man who brought genocide to the native peoples of the Americas along with the Trans-Atlantic African slave trade. Means, along with 82 others were later arrested for peaceful civil disobedience by the Denver Police Department. Instances of police brutality were witnessed and recorded by many on-lookers. The Fifth Avenue of New York was lined with red, white and green as more than 35000 people and 100 bands and floats marched through during the parade. The crowds celebrated this day with high spirits as Christopher Columbus was the man who introduced the lands of America to the world in 1492. Though the holiday primarily honors the discovery of America, the Columbus Day Parade is also the world's largest celebration of Italian-American culture and heritage.
