THE CHARTER FOR COMPASSION

AFFIRM the Charter today: charterforcompassion.org Video Produced by Captain & The Fox (captainandthefox.com) in partnership with WORKSHOP (workshoplovesyou.com). Video Music Composed by: Naturalistic (naturalistic.net) The principle of compassion lies at the heart of all religious, ethical and spiritual traditions, calling us always to treat all others as we wish to be treated ourselves. Compassion impels us to work tirelessly to alleviate the suffering of our fellow creatures, to dethrone ourselves from the centre of our world and put another there, and to honour the inviolable sanctity of every single human being, treating everybody, without exception, with absolute justice, equity and respect. It is also necessary in both public and private life to refrain consistently and empathically from inflicting pain. To act or speak violently out of spite, chauvinism, or self-interest, to impoverish, exploit or deny basic rights to anybody, and to incite hatred by denigrating others - even our enemies - is a denial of our common humanity. We acknowledge that we have failed to live compassionately and that some have even increased the sum of human misery in the name of religion. We therefore call upon all men and women ~ to restore compassion to the centre of morality and religion ~ to return to the ancient principle that any interpretation of scripture that breeds violence, hatred or disdain is illegitimate ~ to ensure that youth are given accurate and respectful information ...

OSHO: Compassion - The Ultimate Flowering of Love

Osho examines the nature of compassion from a radically different perspective. He points out that "passion" lies at the root of the word, and then proceeds to challenge assumptions about what compassion really is. He shows how the path to authentic compassion arises from within, beginning with a deep acceptance and love of oneself. Only then, says Osho, does compassion flower into a healing force, rooted in the unconditional acceptance of the other as he or she is. Excerpt from an original, 104-minute talk by Osho now available on DVD with the book COMPASSION -- St. Martin's Griffin (February 2007) ORDER here: www.amazon.com -- This video is available for translation as part of the OSHO TALKS Video Translation Project. Unconditional Compassion

In this message, Harold W. Becker shares that unconditional love is unconditional compassion. We are such amazing beings of potential. At our core center, we have a spark of life filled with infinite love. Over eons of time and for countless reasons, we have forgotten the importance of being present in the moment and to stay connected with this limitless love. Outer conditions are merely calling to us to take down our self created barriers and to love once more without reservation or hesitation. We take the first step by having unconditional compassion for our own journey. Compassion is the key that unlocks our collective potential to heal our world and restore the love that is at the heart of all creation. When we know we have love in our heart, unconditional compassion becomes as natural as breathing. Go to www.thelovefoundation.com The Love Foundation is a 501(c) 3 nonprofit organization with the mission of inspiring people to love unconditionally. Established in 2000, TLF has become the internationally recognized leading resource for understanding and applying unconditional love. Our vision is to assist people by building a practical foundation and experience of love within individuals and society as a whole, through our education, research and charitable programs. Karen Armstrong: 2008 TED Prize wish: Charter for Compassio

www.ted.com As she accepts her 2008 TED Prize, author and scholar Karen Armstrong talks about how the Abrahamic religions -- Islam, Judaism, Christianity -- have been diverted from the moral purpose they share to foster compassion. But Armstrong has seen a yearning to change this fact. People want to be religious, she says; we should act to help make religion a force for harmony. She asks the TED community to help her build a Charter for Compassion -- to help restore the Golden Rule as the central global religious doctrine.

Another form is 1000-armed Chenresig whose sadhana is practiced in Nyungne -- fasting retreat. His name means : He/She who is listening the cries of the world. His mantra OM MANI PADME HUM is included in many initiations & sadhanas with detailed visualisations, gestures (mudras) etc. Reverence to Him is mentioned in 25th Chapter of the Lotus sutra . All Bodhisattvas have also wrathful aspects. His wrathful aspect is Hayagriva. He represents strength of Chenresig. Many Bodhisattvas have connections with sacred places and mountains. Holy mountain of Manjushri is Wu Tai in China. Avalokiteshvara´s sacred place is Potalaka mountain on the S coast of India. Pú-tó mountain in China is dedicated to Quan Yin. COMPASSION MEDITATION- Part One of Full Program

Mapping Current Research and Charting Future Directions Spend four hours with the Dalai Lama. This all-day conference will bring leading scientists and educators into dialogue with His Holiness the Dalai Lama to discuss the state of current research on empathy and compassion, the scientific study of meditation practices for cultivating compassion, and the implementation of such meditation programs in various clinical and educational settings. The importance of empathy and compassion for human flourishing is being increasingly recognized in the fields of psychology, neuroscience, medicine and contemplative science. Participants will include speakers from the three North American universities that are conducting on-going scientific research on compassion meditation (Emory University, the University of Wisconsin at Madison, and Stanford University). All three of these universities draw their inspiration from His Holiness's leading role in the study of compassion and work closely with traditional Tibetan contemplative scholars as research collaborators.

The Fusion of Wisdom and Compassion: The Model for Education in the Tibetan Buddhist Tradition

Kyabje Locho Rinpoche is Tibet's foremost master of Tantric Yoga and a monk tapped by His Holiness the Dalai Lama for a number of important positions. In his lecture, Rinpoche emphasized two main points about education: scholarship and kindheartedness. "It is extremely important to cultivate a thorough understanding of broad areas of knowledge," he said through an interpreter, elaborating on making a diligent effort and cultivating the attention span. "Mere knowledge will not guarantee a good life. What ensures this is our good heart." He added, "It is important for students not to miss the good heart when pursuing education. If you truly care for others, that is the great fulfillment. For more information, visit international.emory.edu September 30, 2008

R. Carlos Nakai & Nawang Khechog "Compassion"

"So live your life that the fear of death can never enter your heart. Trouble no one about their religion; respect others in their view, and Demand that they respect yours. Love your life, perfect your life, Beautify all things in your life. Seek to make your life long and Its purpose in the service of your people. Prepare a noble death song for the day when you go over the great divide. Always give a word or a sign of salute when meeting or passing a friend, Even a stranger, when in a lonely place. Show respect to all people and Bow to none. When you arise in the morning, give thanks for the food and For the joy of living. If you see no reason for giving thanks, The fault lies only in yourself. Abuse no one and nothing, For abuse turns the wise ones to fools and robs the spirit of its vision. When it comes your time to die, be not like those whose hearts Are filled with fear of death, so that when their time comes They weep and pray for a little more time to live their lives over again In a different way. Sing your death song and die like a hero going home." Tecumseh
