Compressor surge is a phenomenon experienced when boost pressure inside the intake tract builds up and has no convenient relief method. This is usually caused from the throttle plate closing quickly. Changing load conditions (off throttle) resulting in varying amounts of exhaust gas can also simulate such conditions. In such a case, the pressure takes the only way out through the turbocharger compressor housing. The unique sound is caused by the pressure charge encountering the spinning compressor wheel on its escape from the engine. Compressor surge goes by many other names such as compressor stall, turbo dose or dosing, pigeon, turbo flutter/chatter and sometimes mistakenly wastegate chatter. The car was thoroughly warmed up before filming. The boost controller has been disabled allowing the car to run directly off wastegate pressure. The body panels have been removed due to a slowly progressing facelift. Here's a handy tool for disassembling motorcycle and ATV shocks. This tool provides a reasonably safe way of dealing with the rather high forces involved in shock disassembly. The measurements in the video are specific to 2004-2006 Harley Davidson Sportsters. Other years, makes, and models may work with no changes. The basic idea should easily adapt to many applications. I used a CNC mill for the machining, but simpler tools can certainly be substituted. In the opener the engine was running at 35-50 psi and the second start was around 75-80 psi. Top RPMS so far is 1700 at 110 PSI. The timing still needs some work. Solenoid Valves with a Reed Switch and a Magnet are great ways of testing air/steam engines to perfect the timing. A slide valve will eventually be needed as the solenoid valve is rated at 100000 - 1000000 cycles. This engine would wear it out in a day. The flywheel is wafer board (simple easy but not balanced or perfected). Not shown, top voltage from a permanent magnet motor (tread mill) 21 volts, top load 75 watts. The belt started slipping and the timing was hard to get back to perfect for the load. This engine will run 4 minutes on a full 10 gallon tank of air. The last minute is slow around 500 rpms to 50 rpms.

Most light duty compressors are extremely loud. In this video, I swap a fridge compressor with the original. The end result is a whisper quiet unit. I don't have the technical specs on the compressor. I just randomly receive these units to be scrapped. But for comparison's sake, the original fill time was 10mins. With the fridge compressor it takes 5mins.

Sorry, one of my laptop's GPU's are fried so its a bit choppy. This is a typical compressor used in window AC's and the like.
