Cornwall

Cornwall is a county of England in the United Kingdom, forming the tip of the south-western peninsula of Great Britain. It is bordered to the north and west by the Atlantic Ocean, to the south by the English Channel, and to the east by the county of Devon, over the River Tamar. Taken with the Isles of Scilly Cornwall has a population of 534300, and covers an area of 3563 km2 (1376 sq mi).The administrative centre and only city is Truro. The area now known as Cornwall was first inhabited in the Palaeolithic and Mesolithic periods. It continued to be occupied by Neolithic and then Bronze Age peoples, and later (in the Iron Age) by Celts. There is little evidence that Roman rule was effective west of Exeter and few Roman remains have been found. Cornwall was afterwards part of the Brythonic (Celtic) area of Dumnonia, separated from Wales after the Battle of Deorham, often coming into conflict with the expanding English kingdom of Wessex before King Athelstan in 936 AD set the boundary between English and Cornish people at the Tamar.[3] Today, Cornwall's economy struggles after the decline of the mining and fishing industries, and has become more dependent on tourism: however some decline in this has also occurred.[clarification needed] The area is noted for its wild moorland landscapes, its extensive and varied coastline and its mild climate. Cornwall is recognised as one of the "Celtic nations" by many Cornish people, residents and organisations. It retains a distinct ...

RNLI rescue from Sennen Cove, Cornwall

Video courtesy RNLI - Clinging to a cliff face by the tips of her fingernails, this holidaymaker's hysterical screams could be heard hundreds of metres away. Caught out by the spring tide on Good Friday shortly after 2pm, Stacey Hayes, from Leyland in Lancashire, had to be winched to safety by a rescue helicopter from a cliff face between Green Bay and Porthcurno Beach. Three other holidaymakers, including her concerned boyfriend, Adam Neal, also from Leyland, had moments earlier been rescued by an RNLI boat from the bay after they were effectively cut off by the tide. Land's End coastguard station manager Dave Jackson explained he could hear Stacey's panic-stricken cries for help from the Minack Theatre, where he works, prompting him to call Falmouth coastguard.

North Cliffs Failure - Amazing Cliff Collapse caught on Camera!

Active Coastal Erosion in Cornwall. See 'North Cliffs 3hrs Later' video on my channel also. Very lucky to witness 1000's of tonnes of rock falling into the Atlantic! Thanks for all of your positive comments, sorry I can't reply to them all individually. Hopefully I can answer most of the FAQ's now.... The failure occurred at about 5pm on Friday 23rd September 2011. It took place on the North Coast of Cornwall. There were only a few people watching, with about the same number of inquisitive seals in the water! There were lots of 'small' failures just before the main event. This appears to be a progressive failure, the frequency and size of the smaller failures increased until the inevitable happened. The sound was incredible, those cliffs are about 150-200ft high. I'd been chatting to the couple mentioned in the clip only a few minutes before the footage was taken. They can just be seen walking away in the distance; the path had been fenced off and diverted, so they were quite safe. An amazing sight, and credit to R who took the video, I still can't stop revisiting it! Thanks again for all the comments, who says Geology isn't an exciting subject?!. Oh, & finally..... I'm happy to report that no seals or humans were hurt in the filming of this clip! ACSM(93)
