Personal Review: Listening to Acts of Man & Rulers Ruling All things it appears that Midlake is on course to supersede their previously acclaimed album "The Trials of Van Occupanther." The new single and b-side expand on their previous formula with lush compositions and emotive lyrics. Lead vocalist Tim Smith continues to up the bar with his textured voice complementing the overall atmosphere of the tracks. If Acts of Man/Rulers Ruling All Things are any indication of the Midlakes upcoming release, it is safe to say that "The Courage of Others" will set the bar high early for music in 2010.

"Courage to Lead" was the theme for Pingree School's annual celebration of Martin Luther King Day on Tuesday, January 18. The day began with a performance by the Pingree instrumental music groups, followed by an audio-visual presentation of the MLK speech delivered the night before the civil rights leader's assassination. Then, student Sam Garcia spoke about gay rights leader Harvey Milk and showed a film clip and leaders of the Muslim Student Association showed "What Would You Do?, a television program that raised the issue of being a bystander rather than an activist when witnessing discrimination. Pingree theater lab and playwriting students then performed original skits and Pingree dancers performed several large group and small ensemble pieces. The day ended with a spell-binding performance by Dr. Michael Fowlin who spoke of his own history and then introduced the audience to several characters he has created from his own experiences and those of others. He told their stories: the gay football player, the man with cerebral palsy, the young feminist, the Dominican student with depression, the six-year-old with ADD, and more.

From "L'Horizon" (2006) Born on the 6 October 1968 in Provins, France, Dominique Ané is the only child of a teacher and a homemaker. He was passionate about literature and music from a young age. He was interested in the punk music of the time, but at the age of 14, at the beginning of the 1980s, he started to appreciate the dark romanticism of the New Wave movement. After his baccalaureate, he studied humanities for a year, and, at the same time, did a range of odd jobs, including his spell as a utility man for an FM radio station in Nantes, where his family lived. At around the age of 16, he started up a band, John Merrick, named after the hero of the film The Elephant Man, a cult film from David Lynch. He began, at the start of the 1990s, to record more songs, which were both minimalist and rock in style.
