As a 1979 U.Va. alum, it's easy for Couric to share the enthusiasm. She also shares some advice, telling graduates to prepare for the three 'Rs' -- risk, rejection and resilience. Graduates will need to take risks going forward, they will face rejection, and they must be resilient in continuing to forge ahead. In a particularly touching note, she mentions the resilience of Lynette Jones, a graduate in the College of Arts & Sciences, who is undergoing treatment for cancer. Lynette gets a huge round of applause from classmates, and she's clearly grateful that she's able to be part of today's ceremony and celebration.

During a phone call that previewed Palin's appearance, Today show's Matt Lauer asked Palin if she was reading newspapers to prepare—a joke that recalled Couric's famous interview with former-vice presidential candidate Sarah Palin, in which Palin's vague comments about her media diet drew criticism. The mama grizzly may be more used to delivering comments to conservative supporters than a broad audience, but her booking suggests a battle royal between two networks vying for morning media attention this week. What will be more fun to watch—Couric's perky return to the morning, or Palin's possible train wreck? They report—you decide.

Some confusion is obvious on the set of NBC's "Today" show, regarding the Internet and the @-sign. This is reportedly footage from between segments that was not originally aired, and apparently dates to January 1994, around the time of the Northridge earthquake (that occurred literally five minutes from where I'm sitting, and which I remember very well indeed). Both the video and audio of this clip were in terrible shape when I received it recently -- I've cleaned up both as much as possible, though the quality (especially hue distortion) still definitely isn't anything to write home about. Don't laugh too hard at Bryant Gumbel and Katie Couric. It's easy to forget how relatively recent a phenomenon the Internet is for most persons who use it today!
