Dizzy Gillespie "Calidoscopico" (1975)
From his 1975 album "Afro-Cuban Jazz Moods" John Birks "Dizzy" Gillespie (October 21, 1917 January 6, 1993) was an American jazz trumpet player, bandleader, singer, and composer. Together with Charlie Parker, he was a major figure in the development of bebop and modern jazz. He taught and influenced many other musicians, including trumpeters Miles Davis, Fats Navarro, Clifford Brown, Arturo Sandoval, Lee Morgan, and Jon Faddis. In addition to featuring in the epochal moments in bebop, he was instrumental in founding Afro-Cuban jazz, the modern jazz version of what early-jazz pioneer Jelly Roll Morton referred to as the "Spanish Tinge". Gillespie was a trumpet virtuoso and gifted improviser, building on a virtuoso style but adding layers of harmonic complexity previously unknown in jazz. Dizzy's beret and horn-rimmed spectacles, his scat singing, his bent horn, pouched cheeks and his light-hearted personality were essential in popularizing bebop.

As he was very interested in music, he soon took guitar lessons and learned all kinds of percussion instruments. 1986 in East Berlin, he taught himself to play piano and wrote own lyrics and compositions. Ricardo Moreno's texts are both poetic and realistic. They are dealing with Cuba, love and the dilapidation of Havanna. Today his band has 11 members and their style can be described as Afro-Cuban jazz-funk with timba and hip-hop elements.

If you want to know what became of the greatest Cuban musician of the last 30 years, you will find the answer in Chucho Valdez featuring Irakere: Latin Jazz Founders. Directed by Ilena Rodriguez, this DVD tells the story of one of the most legendary groups in modern Cuban popular music: Irakere. It features live performances of "Misa Negra," "Chango," "Stella Va A Estallar" and many others as well as interviews with Chucho and Oscar Valdez, Carlos Emilio Morales, Juilio Oadron and many more. Impossible to overestimate, the influence of Jesus "Chucho" Valdes on Cuban music is evident in virtually everything that comes out of the country. The founder of the Afro-Cuban jazz group Irakere, Valdes and his immensely talented, innovative band paved the way for the success of Cuban music internationally, becoming the first Cuban band signed to an American label, and traveling extensively in the US despite restrictions. The group's name refers to a storied Yoruba drummer, and Irakere incorporated the percussive sounds of Africa into traditional Cuban son music and contemporary jazz. Ilena Rodriguez's documentary tells the story of this legendary band, and answers questions as to where the musicians are now. Included are interviews with Chucho and Oscar Valdez, Carlos Emilio Morales, Juilio Oadron, and others, while live performances of "Misa Negra," "Chango," and "Stella Va A Estallar" are also featured.
