the curvature of the earth in KS

Kansas state driving on I-70. This road trip was to move my mother-in-law back to UT from Washington DC If you pay close enough attention, you can actually see the curvature of the earth. It is so flat in that state.

The Earth's Curvature is Tasty

If I sail a ship to the far far seas, continue on, and on, and on and-- well, you got the point. Where will I find myself? Well, if I travel in a more-or-less straight line (ignoring weather or geography, or time constraints, or my pending homework) I will end up right where I started. Why? Because the Earth is round. Duh. Today we have a lot of sophisticated (and simple) methods of calculating the curvature and size of the earth. But how did humanity figure this out in the first place? I mean.. it's so easy, without the help of satellites, airplanes and Jules Verne, to look at the flat horizon and mistake the earth for a flat table top. How could anyone figure out not only that the world is not flat, but also calculate the size of its radius? Well, when in doubt, try it out. Hey.. I think I like that motto. It's rhyming, and rhymes are usually true. Just ask Dr Seuss. Plus.. it works! Ahoy World! Minecraft - Curvature using GLSL Shaders (Inception-Style)

Here's a quick view of what my Minecraft world looks like. :) This is using the GLSL Shader mod produced by daxnitro over at the Minecraft Forums. A lot of people say that they'd, understandably, prefer it if the world curved the other way. Here's some examples of that. Mocked up examples of a slight curve, a medium curve and a more... drastic curve. :) www.ahoyworld.co.uk www.ahoyworld.co.uk www.ahoyworld.co.uk And here's a video of that mock-up. A snowy little planet! :) www.youtube.com In this video I'm using (through daxnitro's modification) depth of field, waving wheat and trees and a modified version of the basic curvature shader by daxnitro to produce an Inception-esque world. The music playing throughout the video is "Chris" by C418 (the guy that made the music for Minecraft). You can buy the track from him at c418.bandcamp.com for $0.99 and the 24-track Minecraft album from him for $3.99 at c418.bandcamp.com If I had a better computer this thing could look beautiful with full anti-aliasing and a 256x256 texture pack with bump-maps and specular lighting. Hot dang. :)

This is the World's Highest Skydive Available to the CIVILIAN public, NOT the highest skydive ever. Skydiving 30000 FEET, above the earth. 5 miles of free-fall at 177 foot a second doing 120mph. Call your local SKYDIVING CENTER and go make a JUMP. Check out dropzone.com for all your skydiving needs. 1. You can NOT see the curvature of the Earth. That's the Gopro Lens. 2. The Black Dot has something to do with the Artifact in the Camera/Lens. 3. It might be military looking gear, but the jump was made at a CIVILIAN drop zone made by a CIVILIAN Jumper. Ahoy World! Minecraft - Snowy Little Planet (Earth Curvature)

After playing around with a lot of GLSL Shaders recently, this is the look I've finally settled for, and I've started a new world to commemorate me settling down with my mods. This is all in-game, un-edited play. It's using a variety of shaders merged and fiddled with to get the look it now has. High contrast and a wee bit of bloom goes a long way! :) Here's what I'm using: - JohnSmith V7.2 32x32 [1.5] Texture Pack - LB Photo Realism 128x128 [1.5] Water Textures + Animation - Brown & Bloom 512x512 Sun + Moon Textures (down-sized to 128x128) - daxnitro's incorporation of GLSL Shaders - - - Customised Bloom - - - Customised World Curvature - - - Anti-Aliasing 8x - - - Slight contrast filter cheekily done with specular lighting - My own edits of a lot of utility items (eg Chests, Work Benches) which don't appear in the video. The music playing throughout the video is "Clark" by C418 (the guy that made the music for Minecraft). You can buy the track from him at c418.bandcamp.com for $0.99 and the 24-track Minecraft album from him for $3.99 at c418.bandcamp.com I'm still astounded by the sheer beauty of this game. It's simple and brilliant - there's no pressure to do anything at all and it just looks bloomin' fantastic.

This is how YoYo Shop performs the classic 'Around the World' yo-yo trick, in space! With the aid of a high-altitude balloon, GoPro HD Hero camera, and the curvature of the Earth as our backdrop we successfully launched a Yomega Fireball yoyo to near space. We achieved a maximum altitude of 33.2km (109000ft) above the Earth, a height of about four times that of Mount Everest and three times the cruising altitude of commercial aircraft! Photos of Earth from Near Space Weather Balloon

Near space photographic weather balloon. We were able to take photos of near space and the curvature of the earth *End story for the space balloon- After about 58 minutes of flight time the balloon landed in about an hour and a half away by car. We were able to track the landing using the gps on the cheap track phone and used Google Map to see photos of the yard where the balloon had landed. We drove out to find the owner of the property not home and the balloon 75 ft up in a tree in his back yard. We fashioned a long pole (12 ft?) out of pool cues, meter sticks, and duct tape we had in the car and I climbed up the tree with the pole. We were unable to retrieve it on the first attempt and had to drive out to a hardware store to buy a hook to tape to the end of the pole. We retrieved the balloon without the resident ever knowing we were there.

Scale - What If other planets replaced the moon?

Subscribe or check my channel out, more vids in there. From bradblogspeed.com Check out this specific post at post.ly/1XOrk really cool nature and outdoor wallpapers :) irregularpaper.blogspot.com Please follow brad at twitter.com/bradgoodspeed "Here's an animation I did to make you feel small, and also convey the deep awe I feel at the feet of the Universe. While watching the video of the lunar eclipse I posted the other day I was looking at the curvature of the earth's shadow on the moon. It made me think about how large the earth might look if an exact copy of it was up there instead of the moon. Soon curiosity got the better of me, and I was animating! So the basic idea is, each planet you see is the size it would appear in the sky if it shared an orbit with the moon, 380000 kms from earth. I created this video in After Effects, and because of certain technical considerations had to keep the field of view at 62 degrees. That means the foreground element is not precisely to scale. I realized this after the fact and may update the video at some point in the future. All planets are to correct scale with one another in any case. Please watch full screen in HD if possible. Oh! And please consider sharing with your friends on Twitter or Facebook." Music: Where We're Calling From - Doves

NASA Earth Observatory - Meteosat - Equinox, September 23, 2011

Around 6 am local time each day, the Sun, Earth, and any geosynchronous satellite form a right angle, affording a nadir (straight down) view of the terminator, the edge between the shadows of nightfall and the sunlight of dusk and dawn. The shape of this line between night and day varies with the seasons, which means different lengths of days and differing amounts of warming sunshine. (The line is actually a curve because the Earth is round, but satellite images only show it in two-dimensions.) The Spinning Enhanced Visible and Infrared Imager (SEVIRI) on EUMETSAT's Meteosat-9 captured these four views of Earth from geosynchronous orbit. The images show how sunlight fell on the Earth on December 21, 2010 (upper left), and March 20 (upper right), June 21 (lower left), and September 20, 2011 (lower right). Each image was taken at 6:12 am local time. On March 20 and September 20, the terminator is a straight north-south line, and the Sun is said to sit directly above the equator. On December 21, the Sun resides directly over the Tropic of Capricorn when viewed from the ground, and sunlight spreads over more of the Southern Hemisphere. On June 21, the Sun sits above the Tropic of Cancer, spreading more sunlight in the north and turning the tables on the south. The bulge of our spherical Earth blocks sunlight from the far hemisphere at the solstices; that same curvature allows the Sun's rays to spread over more area near the top and bottom of the globe. Of course, it is not ...

Qu8k Rocket Launch Highlights - On-board GoPro HD at 22+ miles above earth

On September 30, 2011 at 11:08am, Derek Deville's Qu8k (pronounced "Quake") launched from the Black Rock Desert in Nevada to an altitude of 121000' before returning safely to earth. Above 99% of the atmosphere, the sky turns black in the middle of the day and the curvature of the earth is clearly visible. The rocket motor produced 4000 lbs of thrust for 8 seconds accelerating the vehicle to over Mach 3 at over 10000'. After that, momentum carried the rocket skyward for another 84 seconds to a peak altitude of 121000'. The Green Flash Sunset The Real Thing Honolulu Hawaii

honolulucitydates.blogspot.com presents the real thing seen from a boat in Maunalua Bay in Hawaii Kai, Honolulu, Oahu, Hawaii. The reason for a green flash lies in refraction of light in the atmosphere light moves more slowly in the lower, denser air than in the thinner air above, so sunlight rays follow paths that curve slightly, in the same direction as the curvature of the Earth. Higher frequency light (green/blue) curves more than lower frequency light (red/orange), so green/blue rays from the upper limb of the setting sun remain visible after the red rays are obstructed by the curvature of the earth. Green flashes are enhanced by atmospheric inversions, which increase the density gradient in the atmosphere, and therefore increase refraction. A green flash is more likely to be seen in clear air, when more of the light from the setting sun reaches the observer without being scattered. We might expect to see a blue flash, but the blue is preferentially scattered out of our line of sight and remaining light ends up looking green. With slight magnification a green rim on the top limb of the solar disk can be seen on most clear-day sunsets. However the flash or ray effects require a stronger layering of the atmosphere and a mirage which serves to magnify the green for a fraction of a second to a couple of seconds.

Extraterrestrials Have Communicated

Each photo is a collage of one object's motion during "the formation" from NASA's STS-80. This is meant to help viewers identify their paths so that they can watch the actual footage and know what to look for. The camera does not move from its original position, and in the end, the objects form either a "septagon" or a circle, depending on how you want to view it. The first object follows the curvature of the earth. The second object enters as a faint disc, then illuminates at the end. The third object enters from the lower left as a faint disc (pointed out by ufoenthusiast), then it finally illuminates near the end. The fourth object appears to illuminate from nowhere at the end. The fifth and sixth objects follow the curvature of the earth and "slowly" move toward their positions. The seventh object comes in from the lower right and flashes (possible satellite?). The eighth object enters as a faint disc, descends toward earth, then illuminates as it reaches the center of the formation.

Escape Vehicle no.6 (chair in space), Simon Faithfull, 2004, [4 min extract]

Escape Vehicle no.6 presents the journey of a domestic chair from the earth to the edge of space. The film started as a live event in a disused aircraft testing site. The live audience first witnessed the launching of a weather balloon with a domestic chair dangling in beneath it. Once the apparatus had dissapeared into the sky they then watched a live video relay from the weather balloon as it journeyed from the ground to the edge of space (30km up). Now presented as a video work, the footage shows the chair first rush away from the fields and roads, ascend through clouds and finally (against the curvature of the earth and the blackness of space) begin to disintegrate. The chilling nature of the film is that the empty chair invites the audience to imagine taking a journey to an uninhabitable realm where it is impossible to breath, the temperature is minus 60 below and the sky now resembles the blackness of space.

Flight of Apollo67, Prototype 1

This was Sector67's first attempt for the hackerspacesinspace.com contest -- a contest for a hackerspace to launch a weather balloon costing less than $200 total, and capture pictures of the curvature of the Earth as seen from space. Launched on November 20, 2011 from just west of Ridgeway, WI (about 37 miles west of Madison, WI), it was believed lost; no data was recovered from the wireless systems. However, in February, 2012, a nice family on the east side of Lake Michigan found it washed up on the beach-- and the data on the onboard computer was recoverable! This is the flight path and altitude recorded during the first hour of the flight, during which the balloon reached an altitude of 17913 meters (almost 59000 feet!). Pictures of near-space (including the curvature of the Earth) *were* recovered, and are at www.sector67.org . For more information, check out www.apollo67.com. Aaron Dykes: Review of Dr. Paul Kossey, HAARP Program Director and What HAARP Can Do 1/2

Photo credit Michael Kleiman, Air Force, Source: Wikimedia Commons FLASHBACK: Alex Jones' June 24, 2008 interview with Dr. Paul Kossey, HAARP Program Manager for Air Force Research Laboratory Space Vehicles Directorate (operating out of Hanscom Air Force Base in Massachusetts). Dr. Paul Kossey was featured in a Popular Science article from June 18, 2008: The Military's Mystery Machine The High-frequency Active Auroral Research Program, or HAARP, has been called a missile-defense tool and a mind-control device. The truth is a bit less ominous One application government scientists are particularly interested in is turning the lower ionosphere into a tool for broadcasting radio signals or bouncing them around the curvature of the Earth. By beaming a signal ranging from 2.8 to 10 megahertz into the ionosphere and then pulsing the signal, HAARP stimulates what's called a "virtual antenna"—a radio interaction that causes the ionosphere to send a very low-frequency signal back down to Earth. The phenomenon could theoretically improve submarine communication. Because salty, conductive seawater absorbs high-frequency radio waves, submarines currently operate with wires that reach up into shallow depths to receive usable radio signals. Low-frequency signals like the ones ...
