Danny Boy by Eva Cassidy

So many singers, unknown as well as famous, have unsuccessfully sang this Irish song. I admit this is a hard song to sing but to me, this version by Eva Cassidy is perfection if ever there is perfection. I don't believe anyone can sing this song as beautifully and with as much sincere emotion as Eva. A note I wish to add on Nov1, 2007, for those who do not know, tomorrow Nov 2, 2007 is the 11th anniversary of Eva Cassidy's death 11 years ago.

Deanna Durbin - Danny Boy

Performer - Deanna Durbin Lyrics - Frederick Weatherly The famous ballad "Danny Boy", ironically, was written by a man who never set foot in Ireland. Weatherly, an English barrister who was also a prolific poet, had originally set "Danny Boy" to music he had composed. The song was not successful. When he heard the "Londonderry Air", he realized that "Danny Boy" would fit nicely to that tune. Over 100 songs have been set to "Londonderry Air", but "Danny Boy" is the most famous. Band and orchestral musicians will also recognize the tune as Grainger's "Irish Tune from County Derry". Oh, Danny boy, the pipes, the pipes are calling, From glen to glen and down the mountain side; The summer's gone, and all the roses falling; It's you, it's you must go, and I must bide. But come ye back when summer's in the meadow, Or when the valley's hushed and white with snow; I'll be here in sunshine or in shadow; Danny boy, Oh Danny boy, I love you so. But if ye come and all the flowers are dying, If I am dead, as dead I well may be. Ye'll come and find the place where I am lying, And kneel and say an "Ave" there for me. And I will know, 'though soft ye tread around me, And then my grave shall richer sweeter be, Then you'll bend down and tell me that you love me, And I shall sleep in peace until you come to me.

Irish Tenor Anthony Kearns Sings "Danny Boy" in Washington, DC

Renowned Tenor Anthony Kearns performs at a "Celebration of Irish Spirits" holiday reception at the Capitol Hill Club in Washington, DC on Thurs., Dec. 17, 2009. In this clip, Kearns sings Danny Boy. At the piano is Eric Stern. Possibly the most beloved of all Irish music was finalized in the form most used today by Frederick Weatherly when he set his words to the tune of the "Londonderry Air" in 1912. There is arguably no song more dear to the Irish than Danny Boy. Its sweet poignancy, its delicate strains bring a tear to the eye. It brings visions of a mother's parting from a dear lad; a father's difficult good-bye to his son; a lover's parting in time of war. It is an incredible piece of music which can be heard in pubs and in churches, at parades and wakes, by choirs and soldiers. To the expatriate Irish, it has become an unofficial anthem to the home country left behind, the home of their fathers, Mother Ireland. It is sung wherever people of Irish blood gather, and it is said that all people become Irish when that song is crooned. Danny Boy is never sung more sweetly, with more emotion, care, and purity than when Anthony Kearns sings it. Kearns' appearance was made possible by the Distilled Spirits Council, The Capitol Hill Club, DIAGEO, DDC Advocacy, MH Media, NBC Universal, Reflections Photography, and Kirsten Fedewa and Associates, LLC. Event proceeds benefited The Consortium of Catholic Academies. store.anthonykearnsmusic.com Contact: Kirsten Fedewa (Kirsten ...

Danny Boy - sung by Nana Mouskouri - a video by PKLaf

Danny Boy is a song whose lyrics are set to the Irish tune Londonderry Air. The lyrics were originally written for a different tune in 1910 by Frederick Weatherly, an English lawyer, and were modified to fit Londonderry Air in 1913 when Weatherly was sent a copy of the tune by his sister. The first recording was made by Ernestine Schumann-Heink in 1915. Weatherly gave the song to Elsie Griffin, who made it one of the most popular in the new century. Weatherly later suggested in 1928 that the second verse would provide a fitting requiem for the actress Ellen Terry. Source: Wikipedia.

Rufus Wainwright - Danny Boy

Danny Boy Your skin is cold But the sun shines within your hold Your hair is gold But you see through a goldfish bowl I feel old, sick, and tired We walk the streets Gently staring, wondering what to do The sun in sheets Pouring down those streets to eyes green and blue And a ship with eight sails could come round the bend Or a heard of bulls charging stoplights red I'd be blind You broke my heart, danny boy Not your fault, danny boy I was had at the doorstep Played, like a two to a four-set Had, like poor job in the bible by god Day comes, I wake I wake with a hard heartache I go down to your place We sit and chat about new york And trips to the bayou My smile, a trick Tricking me and trying not to scare you And a ship with eight sails could come round the bend Or a heard of bulls charging stoplights red I'd be blind You broke my heart, danny boy Not your fault, danny boy I was had at the doorstep Played, like a two to a four-set Had, like poor job in the bible by god from Rufus Wainwright sessions at West 54th, 1998

Londonderry Air (Danny Boy) Irish Folk Song (Celtic harp & tin whistle)

Beautiful Nothern Irish anthem "Londonderry Aire", also known as "Danny Boy". Performed with Celtic harp and tin whistle. The song has been interpreted by some listeners as a message from a parent to a son going off to war or leaving as part of the Irish diaspora. Some interpret it differently,[who?] such a dying father speaking to his leaving Danny. The phrase, "the pipes, the pipes are calling", in this interpretation, could refer to the traditional funeral instrument. The song is widely considered an Irish anthem. "Danny Boy" is considered by many Irish Americans and Irish Canadians to be their unofficial signature song.
