Cloud technologies power some of Internet's most well-known sites—Picasa, Gmail, Facebook and Zynga, just to name a few—and cloud companies are striving to make the computer processing behind these sites as energy efficient as possible. With that in mind, Facebook, Dell, HP, Rackspace, Skype, Zynga and others have teamed together to form the Open Compute Project to share best practices for making more energy efficient and economical data centers. To kick-start the project, Facebook unveiled its innovative new data center and contributed the specifications and designs to Open Compute. "Cloud companies are working hard to become more and more energy efficient...[and] this is a big step forward today in having computing be more and more green," explains Graham Weston, Chairman of Rackspace. A small team of Facebook engineers has been working on the project for two years. They custom designed the software, servers and data center from the ground up. One of the most significant features of the facility was that Facebook eliminated the centralized UPS system found in most data centers. "In a typical data center, you're taking utility voltage, you're transforming it, you're bringing it into the data center and you're distributing it to your servers," explains Tom Furlong, Director of Site Operations at Facebook. Google provided a look inside its data center operations at the Google Data Center Efficiency Summit held Wednesday in Mountain View, Calif. The presentations included a video tour of a Google data center, which showcased the companys use of shipping containers to store servers and storage. Each of these 40-foot data center containers can house up to 1160 servers, and Google has been using them since it began building its own facilities in 2005. The Data Center in the Research Support Facility on the campus of the US Department of Energy's National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL) marks a significant accomplishment in its ultra-efficiency. HP Performance Optimized Data Centers (PODs) are designed for rapid deployment at a fraction of the cost of traditional data centers. For large IT deployments, a typical data center involves either building out a new brick-and-mortar facility complete with HVAC, power, networking, redundanacy, and planned capacity increase. With the latest iteration of the POD, 240a, also known as the EcoPOD, HP is predicting 75% lower pricing for capital expenditures and an ongoing energy consumption that's a mere 5% of what a comparable facitlity would be. EcoPOD handles heating and cooling using a free air system, which keeps costs down. The standalone units are expandable, made to sustain 150mph winds, and survive in even the most extreme hot and cold conditions found in many parts of the world. A single EcoPOD offers the capacity for up to 4400 servers in up to 44 standard 50U racks. The same capabilities of a 10000 square foot data center are packed into 900 square feet. Where you see the cars parked is where Apple intends to Double by building another 575000 which should total 1.15 Million Square feet of Data Centers. Apple just cleared another 75 Acre site across the street which they paid $1.6 Million for. Word is the purpose is for a small solar farm and what is rumored to be an I-Cloud University for training clients on I-cloud's offerings. This information was gathered by speaking with local resources and has not be confirmed by Apple. But when Steve Jobs mentioned Maiden, NC three times during his stockholder's meeting it was not because of just one data center. This is just the beginning of what Apple has in store for Maiden, NC.

www.softlayer.com ≡ http A few weeks ago, Sam Fleitman SoftLayer's CTO posted "Before They Were SoftLayer Data Centers," (sftlyr.com a virtual scrapbook from the San Jose data center construction process, and based on the surge of traffic we saw to the post, our customers loved it. It's incredible to see an open warehouse-looking space transformed into an enterprise data center environment, and there's more amazingness where that came from. In addition to the pre-"Truck Day" pictures we posted on the blog and in the San Jose DC Construction album on Flickr, we trained a video camera on a row in the data center to capture the cabling process. What's so interesting about plugging in cables? Consider the fact that each of the network switches we use in a rack has at least 48 ports. Now consider that each rack has two public network switches, two private network switches and one out-of-band management network switch that need to be connected to every SoftLayer server in the rack. That's 240 pre-measured network cables that need to be labeled and routed to specific heights in each rack ... without getting tangled and knotted up (see: behind your TV or under your computer desk). Get ready to be amazed here's the SJ data center team in action. The new platform, dubbed Windows Azure, was announced at Microsoft's Professional Developers Conference in Los Angeles. The platform was described by Microsoft's chief software architect Ray Ozzie as "Windows for the cloud". The framework will be offered alongside the next Windows release, Windows 7. The move sees Microsoft taking on established players like Google and Amazon in the rapidly growing business of online software. The aim is to allow developers to build new applications which will live on the internet, rather than on their own computers. Microsoft believes consumers will also want to store far more of their data - from letters to photos to videos - on the servers in its "cloud" of giant data centres around the world, so that it can be accessed anywhere, from any device. http
