This race was sanctioned by the East Coast Timing Association, which for years had been running on an old WWII runway at the airport in Maxton, North Carolina. When military needs caused the ECTA to lose access to Maxton at the end of the 2011 season, the city of Wilmington was happy to accept the racers. The very first meet was filled to capacity with 175 entries, and despite rain delays, 24 vehicles eclipsed 200 mph at the event. Bonneville 2011, our 1980 Hot Rod Camaro makes its first pass with Editor David Freiburger behind the wheel. But the run is cut short due to problems. As it turned out, the 492ci blown big-block swallowed a carb vent tube that killed a few pistons. The team went on to make the dead engine run on two cylinders and set a record of 32 mph in a small-displacement engine class.

On this episode of Roadkill, David Freiburger, Mike Finnegan and a carsick dog drive a '69 El Camino 500 miles from home (on seven cylinders) to change an engine in the parking lot of Summit Racing. The story goes that Finnegan's wife's grandfather bought this1969 Chevy El Camino brand new, and it's been passed down through the family, finally to her. It's a solid car, and the suspension has been hopped up, but the all-original 350 engine was smoking like a freight train. That didn't stop the guys from limping it from Los Angeles, California to Sparks, Nevada, where Summit Racing has a fully-stocked warehouse. Summit sells every speed part and replacement part on Earth, including the 420hp, 383ci crate engine, so the logic was that the guys would save time on the engine swap because they could walk right into the store instead of driving to a parts store multiple times, as they would have back home. This is Hot Rod magazine's 1979 Camaro Z28 with a GM Performance Parts LS3 smog legal crate engine, a T56 Magnum six speed, and a Strange 9-inch rear. The engine is like a stock 2010 Corvette motor and even has four cats. It made 402 rwhp at 5600 rpm and 410 lb-ft at 3600.

At Speed Week 2011, the HOT ROD/So-Al Racing team killed a few pistons on the very first run when the blown big-block swallowed a carb vent tube. We gave up on running 250-plus mph and re-entered a small-displacement class, F/CBFALT. We got the engine to run on two cylinders and set a record at 32 mph. This is the backup pass. Watch as the the push truck shoves off too slow. Freiburger downshifts to try and keep it running, then Turk realizes what's happening and shoves harder before turning off at the 1-mile and sending the two-banger Camaro down the track.
