Installing Debian on the N900

Installing Debian on the N900. FilmsByKris.com WARNING!!! I say in the video that you can use Debain and since it's in a chroot you don't need to worry about screwing up your Maemo OS. This is mostly true. But, you can still access your Maemo OS partition so you can still screw files up. So, still be careful.

Debian Gnome + Beryl "3D-Desktop"

Debian GNU/Linux with Gnome Desktop running Beryl/AIGLX for 3D desktop effects. Debian version was "etch" ("testing" at that time). System: AMD64 3500+, 1024 DDR2-400, Geforce 6600GT (but it runs on very old machines, try it out) You can get all themes, styles, icons etc. on gnome-look dot org. The dockbar at the top is part of "gDesklets" (available on official repositories). On gnome-look dot org, search for... "dragon" (wallpaper) "glassy" (icon set) "dark" (color theme, I don't remeber the exact name) You can install everything with the default gnome theme manager. There are a lot of users posting "this is ubuntu" - it's not! The menu icon was part of the default ubuntu icon set I installed before (the new "glassy" icon set does not replace the menu button).

Debian Sarge Setup

This is a base Debian sarge setup, with no GUI or other non-essential apps loaded. This is what I use as the base for all my Debian builds, then pile the applications on top of it. This is the first in a series of videos on how to setup Debian to perform specific functions (ie web server, proxy server, etc.). I'm primarily doing this to help demystify Debian as being difficult to setup, and administer.

Howto: Debian Linux Kernel Compilation, Part 1

A four part miniseries on compiling a new kernel in a debian-based distro. The condensed version of this tutorial, all of this is explained in depth in the video: 1.wget recentkernel source from "ftp.kernel.org" 2.extract kernel source in /usr/src "tar jxvf linux-2.6.xx.tar.bz2" 3. grab a patch, if desired. 3a. apply patch "cd /usr/src/li* && bzip2 -dc ../patchdiff.bz2 | patch -p1 --dry-run" 3b. if dry run patch succeeds, repeat process omiting --dry-run 4. copy current kernel config (if you want a decent base, if you want to build vanilla, omit this step) "cp /boot/config-`uname -r` ./.config" 5. "make menuconfig", load your config, and tweak as desired. 6. "make all" 7. "make modules_install" 8. "make install" 9. use mkinitrd.yaird or mkinitramfs, or whatever initrd generator you use to create a initrd for your kernel with "mkinitrd.yaird -o /boot/initrd-2.6.xx 2.6.xx" (where xx is the new kernel version) 10. update your grub config in /boot/grub/menu.list or do "update-grub" as root. 11. reboot into your new system.

Debian 6.0 Xfce Review - Linux Distro Reviews

A review of the latest Debian Stable, or Debian 6.0 Squeeze with the Xfce desktop environment. A surprisingly lightweight distro with the stability and reliability that Debian is renowned for. Definitely worth giving it a try if you know your way around Linux and want a fast and stable workhorse. Apologies for the extremely tight (possibly rough) edit of this video, you'll notice a few times where I cut myself off from the end of the sentence. I was pressed for time as college has gone back and I was trying to get this rather long video to under 15 min. I didn't succeed...Never mind. My apologies. Also I said "Xfce" when I was actually referring to "VLC" @ 8:05. Ohhh dear...wasn't concentrating.

Debian Linux on Archos 43 Internet Tablet

I recently purchased an Archos 43 4.3" Android Internet Tablet. It is a phone/PDA sized device with a 4.3" touchscreen and runs Android 2.2 (as of now anyways). I chose it because I wanted an Android device but didn't want to mess with expensive data plans or contracts. It really is a nice device, it has a fast 1GHz TI OMAP3630 ARM processor, 256MB of RAM, PowerVR SGX graphics, an 854x480 touchscreen (resistive/single-touch type), WiFi N, and Bluetooth. It also features USB host (USB OTG through micro port) and mini-HDMI connections. Archos released a special firmware called the Developer Edition which installs a bootloader that allows you to load a second operating system. The provided one is Angstrom Linux, a small distribution they threw together for demo purposes. It isn't very useful and many things don't work right, so I found a way to install Debian on it thanks to Debian-Archos and OpenAOS. The Debian distribution comes with OpenOffice, which allows for full-blown document editing right on the device, Microsoft format compatibility, and is free. What Works: ARM CPU and Linux kernel TI WiFi chip Touchscreen (calibration is necessary on Archos 43, but I have added it to my image) PowerVR SGX framebuffer (OpenGL and graphics acceleration are not available, but the framebuffer is optimized for the graphics chip. Rotation is not yet supported and the A43's screen defaults to portrait so landscape isn't an option yet) USB (client mode, allows for USB to PC networking in <b>...</b>

Installing Debian Linux On The Nokia N810 Internet Tablet

Following closely behind the Android simple install earlier this month, users over at Internet Tablet Talk have setup an easy way to install Debian Linux - the full desktop - on the Nokia Internet Tablet. Not to miss out on the fun, I decided to give the Debian a go on my Nokia N810. To note, you'll need about 1.3GB of free memory on either the internal memory or a removable memory card. After the installation, you'll still have 1GB free, but you need to have it all free for the installation process. You'll also need to have the MyTube application installed, so that you can get Python2.5 and Python 2.5-gtk2 installed on your tablet.

Debian 6.0 squeeze Beta 1

The Debian Installer team is pleased to announce the first beta release of the installer for Debian GNU/Linux Squeeze. This release is dedicated to Frans Pop, who worked as Debian Installer Release Manager for several years. Even after he stepped out from this responsibility in 2007, Frans continued to be heavily involved in several aspects of DI until he passed away. Frans played a key role in ensuring that DI was constantly maintained at the high quality level that had been set by its original developers. In particular, Frans kept the Installation Guide in very good shape throughout the period that he was involved in DI. Frans' name will remain associated with Debian Installer, and his loss is deeply regretted by Debian Installer developers, contributors and translators. Improvements in this release of the installer Auto-selection of kernel for PlayStation 3. Recovery partitions for Microsoft Windows are properly detected. Linux kernel updated to 2.6.32. GNU Parted updated to 2.2. Support for new platforms has been added: Marvell GuruPlug; Marvell OpenRD-Ultimate; HP t5325 Thin Client (partial support). Support for isohybrid images when using cdrom-detect/try-usb. Installer now look for firmware .debs on the installation media, in a firmware/ directory, allowing PXE images and CDs to be created with firmware .debs included. Hardware specific Debian packages are installed automatically using discover-pkginstall from the discover package. Localization: added Kannada <b>...</b>

Why I switched to Debian with Gnome 2 vs Ubuntu 11.10 with Unity or Gnome Shell

In this video I will show you why I switched from Ubuntu to Debian. All Linux Geeks knows Debian is more stable. But, there are other cool features that got my attention. Gnome 2 is surprisingly light on Debian. There is this feature called Deskbar Applet, which is my new favorite for now. Global menu is also cooler on gnome 2. Compiz is a plus with its expose and stuff. Just watch the video and you will see what I mean. My desktop is now stable, prettier, safer, and faster. go to my website: www.necopost.com Check out my Youtube Channel www.youtube.com Linux system: Debian 6 (squeeze) Desktop environment: Gnome 2.30.2 More features added with Compiz, deskbar-applet and gnome-applet-globalmenu Video HD details: Format: WEBM Dimensions: 1280 x 800 px Video codec: VP8 Audio codec: VORBIS screencast app: personal ffmpeg script.

Debian 6.0 Squeeze - netinst - minimal installation

Debian is a free operating system (OS) for your computer. An operating system is the set of basic programs and utilities that make your computer run. Debian uses the Linux kernel (the core of an operating system), but most of the basic OS tools come from the GNU project; hence the name GNU/Linux. Debian GNU/Linux provides more than a pure OS: it comes with over 29000 packages, precompiled software bundled up in a nice format for easy installation on your machine. Apt-Listbugs - Get Bug Reports Before Installing - Debian

tool which lists critical bugs before each apt installation apt-listbugs is a tool which retrieves bug reports from the Debian Bug Tracking System and lists them. Especially, it is intended to be invoked before each upgrade/installation by apt in order to check whether the upgrade/installation is safe. Many developers and users prefer the unstable version of Debian for its new features and packages. apt, the usual upgrade tool, can break your system by installing a buggy package. apt-listbugs lists critical bug reports from the Debian Bug Tracking System. Run it before apt to see if an upgrade or installation is known to be unsafe.
