This is one the songs The Beatles played for their audition for Decca Records on January 1st, 1962. Though the performance by Paul is extraordinary and the harmonies by George and John are razor sharp and as tight as they ever were The Beatles were rejected and another band now forgotten were signed. The song was written by Consuelito Velazquez who is a Mexican songwriter!

I had this song up previously and I was contacted by Chris Mercer, one of the Bluesbreakers who played sax on this track. He offered a couple of photos of himself (I hadn't been able to find much in the way of images of him and indeed this version of the Bluesbreakers). So I have redone the video to include his two photos. The two photos of Chris are at 3.13 and 3.17 (although I cropped both significantly). According to Chris, the first 'is from summer '67 just after I graduated from Oxford and joined the band, taken at Klooks Kleek, which was in West Hampstead right next door to Decca studios, where the albums were recorded. The second one was a year or so later, looks like it was taken in Decca or Abbey Rd studios from the background, my hair was much longer by then'. I have summarised some of Chris' observations as follows: "Working in that band at that time, when it went from cult to international status was very exciting. We were on the road 5 to 6 nights a week and travelled widely in Europe, as well as the groundbreaking tour of the USA. That particular era before the end of the 60s was an incredible time. Much of the business was run at grass roots level by the musicians themselves, before the lawyers, bankers, accountants and managerial chancers turned it into an industry' ". Chris also went on to say that Mayall was a hard task master, changing personnel every few years. After the Bluesbreakers Chris (and his wife) went to the US where he found a new career in ...

Gloria - Them. "Gloria" is a rock song classic written by Northern Irish singer-songwriter Van Morrison and originally recorded by Morrison's band Them in 1964 as the B-side of "Baby, Please Don't Go". The song became a garage rock staple and a part of many rock bands' repertoires. It is particularly memorable for its "G--L--O--R--I--A" chorus. It is very easy to play (three-chord) and thus is popular with those learning to play guitar. The song continues to be played by thousands of bands from famous recording artists to unknown garage bands. Humourist Dave Barry joked that "If you drop a guitar down a flight of stairs, it'll play 'Gloria' on its way to the bottom." The beauty of the original is that Van Morrison needs only to speak-sing, in his Howlin' Wolf growl, "I watch her come up to my house/She knocks upon my door/And then she comes up to my room/I want to say she makes me feel all right/GLORIA!" to convey his teenage lust. The original Latin meaning of the name is not lost on Morrison. Them never varies from the three chords, utilizing only dynamic changes to heighten the tension. "Gloria" was rated number 69 on Dave Marsh's list in the 1989 book The Heart of Rock & Soul: The 1001 Greatest Singles Ever Made. He described the song as "one of the few rock songs that's actually as raunchy as its reputation." In his book Rock and Roll: The 100 Best Singles, Paul Williams said about the two sides of the "Baby Please Don't Go/Gloria" recording: "Into the heart of the ...

I've been staying at my friend Matt's house and as I'm not paying rent, he insisted I sing a song by way of compensation. He lined up a karaoke version of 'Nessun Dorma' and this is what happened. This song is unique for several reasons. Obviously, because it's one of only two songs that have singer Jolie Detta on it, but more importantly, because of Franco's guitar part on it. We like to think of Franco's guitar role as mi-solo, and the mi refers to the range of his playing. Lower, we usually find the rhythm guitar (Gégé Mangaya) and under that the bass (Mpudi Decca), above the mi-solo is the solo (here: Dizi Mandjeku). But usually, Franco's part is the free part. On this song, however, besides the obvious solos he plays of course, Franco's guitar part is the very basis of the song, so seemingly not really free at all. His riff is what the whole song was built on. He did this several times in his career, for instance on Malata www.youtube.com and in the 1980's he did it more often than ever before, but in this respect this tune is most certainly a favourite of mine. Other examples are Mario, Makambo Ezali Minene, 12600 Lettres, Non!, Tu Vois? (aka Mamou), all songs of a certain type, basically in the African Jazz school type of composing. The subtle variations he plays in the riff are excruciating. But it's very, very easy to miss how wonderfully he does that. That's why it deserves to be heard in the stereo mix, because in mono it's even harder to take notice. Just for once, ignore everything else and concentrate on listening all the way through to the guitar that you hear in the intro. Headphones might help. And as if that is not enough of a signature of the ...
