Part 1 of 5 - How to Make Better Decisions - BBC Horizon

We are bad at making decisions. According to science, our decisions are based on oversimplification, laziness and prejudice. And that's assuming that we haven't already been hijacked by our surroundings or led astray by our subconscious! Featuring exclusive footage of experiments that show how our choices can be confounded by temperature, warped by post-rationalisation and even manipulated by the future, Horizon presents a guide to better decision making, and introduces you to Mathematician Garth Sundem, who is convinced that conclusions can best be reached using simple maths and a pencil!

October 21, 2011 - Professor Baba Shiv continues the discussion on brain research at Stanford, but takes the topic in a different direction. He focuses on the role that the brain plays in the decision making process that is so fundamental to our existence. He looks at how emotion is interpreted by the brain and ultimately affects the final decision making process. Decision Making

A decision is a final product of a specific mental/cognitive process by an individual or group, which is called decision making, or in more detail, Inactive decision making, Reactive decision making, and Proactive decision making. Therefore it is a subjective concept. It is a mental object and can be an opinion, a rule or a task for execution/application. More precisely speaking, a mental object D is a decision if obtained by a conscious choice of only one opinion or one action (from a known set called alternatives), and it is designated for an application. Decisions, at times, are influenced by factors that have almost nothing to do with surrounding reality or material facts. For example superstition may play a significant role in decision making, and so are other beliefs such as numerology, astrology, and many other forms of similar unscientific and perhaps even spiritual standards. Decisions can also be made by AI computer programs and autonomous robots. That what essentially influence a decision is the set of alternatives available for a decision-maker and choice criteria applied. These are often addressed using decision support systems In different human activity domains, decision has many local meanings, for example,

Mastering the Art of Decision-Making

By the time theyve reached their final semester before graduating, Business Management majors have absorbed an enormous amount of knowledge from their coursework. Joel Evans goal is to help those students use their knowledge to make sound decisions. That is the objective of Managerial Decision-Making, a capstone course that synthesizes virtually everything Business Management students have learned in their first and second years, according to Evans, a lecturer in both the Business Management and Development Skills Departments. A case study approach The course is based primarily on case studies of typical management problems in every conceivable area, from sales and marketing to human resources, he says. Students learn to identify the problem, propose a solution and then justify it, Why a separate course on decision-making? Managers are often afraid to make decisions, especially in the current business climate, Evans says. In some cases, they will recognize a problem but back off from making a decision in the expectation that the problem, if left alone, will solve itself—which is often a mistake. While making a decision in and of itself isnt necessarily difficult, he adds, the challenge we address in the course is how to justify the decision and make it meaningful to the business. Ultimately, he says, what we want is for students to have the courage to make a decision—and, ideally, to have the resources to make the right decision at the right time. Risk: The Neural Basis of Decision Making

Lecture presented by Professor John O'Doherty for the Darwin College Lecture Series 2010. A deeper understanding of how the brain makes decisions will not only inspire new theories of decision making, it will also contribute to the development of genuine artificial intelligence, and it will enable us to understand why some humans are better than others at making decisions, why humans with certain psychiatric and neurological disorders are less capable of doing so, and why under some circumstances humans systematically fail to make rational decisions. Most decisions made in everyday life are taken for the purposes of increasing our well-being, whether it is deciding what item to choose off a restaurant menu, or deliberating over what career path to follow. Prominent amongst these is the value or utility of each decision option, which indicates how advantageous a particular option is likely to be for our future well-being. Another relevant signal present in the brain is the riskiness attached to a particular decision option, which can influence the decision making mechanism according to ones own individual preferences (whether one is risk-seeking or risk-averse).

Does it always require someone else to teach us, as children, what Right and Wrong mean? Are the social rules and morals regarding Right and Wrong behavior accurate? What's the best way to know if what I'm thinking or doing is Right to do? In this excerpt, Esther Hicks / Abraham Hicks talks about the emotional guidance system and how we can use our emotions to determine what is right or wrong for us. Teen Decision Making On Engaging in High Risk Behavior Video

Factors That Affect Important Decision Making by Youth Video. Tells the story of four boys who are faced with a decision--whether or not to steal a car and take a joy ride. Shows that even though a boy's decision may be colored by his background, the responsibility is his. Well done production for teenagers about making important decisions. Also indicates the importance of positive parent interaction with their children. Sid Davis triumphs again in this insightful study of the young criminal mind. When four teenage boys chance upon a stylish convertible with its keys left in the ignition, they momentarily consider if stealing the vehicle is a wise move. The film's tough narrator states that while the four boys have gone through unique life experiences that will ultimately influence their decision to either steal the car or simply walk away, they are all cognizant that the theft of the convertible constitutes a major criminal offence and that they will be held liable for their actions. Those familiar with several of Davis' other films won't find the conclusion to be quite as hard-hitting as one might expect, but it certainly doesn't disappoint. A nice production that stresses the importance of personal responsibility in a world in which it is being increasingly eschewed. Four 1960's teen boys, products of their environment and life experience, find a new convertable with the top down and the keys in the ignition. While we are in suspense about what they will do, the ...
