My Deconversion Part 2: My Pillars of Faith (revised)

"Everybody is an atheist with respect to most of the gods humanity has ever believed in; some of us just go one god further..." - Richard Dawkins "For me, it is far better to grasp the Universe as t really is, than to persist in delusion, however satisfying and reassuring." - Carl Sagan. I'm what you might call a New Atheist, and I'm new here on YouTube. There are several people here on YouTube to whom I owe my sanity and I will get around to thanking them personally in later videos. I hope you'll all pull up a spare seat and treat me nicely :) Note: This is the second revision of this video to be published. The original was made available five days earlier and had some factual errors with respect to the earlier gods with christ-like attributes. I have corrected these errors and re-uploaded the video. The important moral to learn from this experience and this video series is this: I am not a Creationist or a fundamentalist-anything. If I get something wrong and am shown the evidence, I change my mind. When you are presented with evidence that is contrary to your beliefs what do you do? Do you change your beliefs to be in line with new and current and confirmed evidence or do you sit tight to your old ideas? I know which side of the evidence-based fence I sit on. How about you?

The main point of the video is that there is nothing you can do to deconvert someone, but rather you can have a certain influence that may or may not lead to them deconverting themselves.

Cel's Guide to Theist Deconversion

I don't advocate trying to deconvert theists. However, when I was a fundamentalist, I converted others to validate my untenable beliefs to myself. I offer this guide as a redress of grievances. Rule #1: know yourself. Know what values you place the most importance in. Know your strengths and weaknesses. Most importantly, know your motivations. Are you doing this from a genuine concern for others, or just for bragging rights? Rule #2 know your mark. What is their theology? What values are most important to them? What are their strengths and weaknesses? What characteristics of yours will they see as strengths or weaknesses? Most importantly, are they happy and compassionate in their religion? We want to diffuse the hate and authoritarianism, not just score points for "our side". Rule #3 know your mark's theology. Know their holy book better than they do. Know the nuances of their specific theology better than they do. You want to be the one throwing the curve balls. Coming in part 2 : Know YOUR shit. Be respectful Consider alternatives

Is the misunderstanding of God's morality really a rational and/or legitmate excuse for proof that God doesn't exist? Is it truly a legitimate cause for one's so called 'deconversion'? What say you?

Re: Deconversion 2.0 overview

Deconversion is a misnomer in reference to this series. You could deconvert from a religion and you could make Christianity into a religion. But true Christianity means Christ follower, in short that means Jesus is your ultimate hero, not to mention your God. You don't have to do anything other than accept His free gift of eternal life, but in truth once you have you recieved it and you start to realize how much He loves you, most people want to do something, some sooner, some later.

DECONVERSON - SIGNS of FUTURE DECONVERSION

Here we take a brief moment to look at (in my opinion) some points that may lead us to convsider the signs or attributes of a future ex-christian. -Lack of fellowship -No spiritual growth -Hyper Intellectualism but no relationship with God These could be one of many signs for us to acknowledge, but let us not use this to judge others, but to primarily judge and examine OURSELVES!!!

Re: Post your deconversion stories here!!!

A response to KingHeathen, my "Deconversion" story, that isn't really a deconversion. And about that part with the pastor, I wasn't trying to be a smartass, I just didn't realize at that age that it was unusual or controversial, I was just being honest.
Why deconvert? For SonistheFatherofMan, with some kitten.

The question is: what's the benefit of deconversion? My answer revolves around the fact that religion's benefits can be found elsewhere. So why not free your mind? (at the risk of sounding cliche) Nix ~ added some kitten

Deconverting a Christian

This is a response to losoyo's video challenging atheists to present their best argument(s) to potentially deconvert Christians. I have said before, and still maintain, that I am not in the business of deconverting, and I do not care what people personally believe. However, I do spend a lot of time, and a great deal of energy, challenging what people believe. So in that spirit, I do have an answer, with what I think is the best argument to make someone reconsider their faith.
