Call to decriminalise drugs

The global war on drugs has failed, a group of past and present world leaders said on Thursday. The report, by the Global Commission for Drug Policy, says criminalisation has cost millions and has only succeeded in fuelling organised crime. British entrepreneur Sir Richard Branson said drug users should no longer be treated as criminals. "I think what the commission would like is for European countries to experiment," Branson told euronews. ... www.euronews.net

Michael Hudson, "In America and Europe, Crime has been Decriminalized"

Follow us @ twitter.com twitter.com Eurozone leaders are meeting, again...After talking about the eurozone crisis in Davos, they've moved to Brussels for an EU summit to...talk about it some more...blah blah blah. A lot of talk. When are we going to get something legitimate? Meanwhile, governments and banks are still in bed together - tangled up in their illicit love affair three years after the financial crisis began. We know the drill and we're sick of it. We are sick of socializing losses. We are sick of fraudulent accounting. We are sick of hostage crises that force us to give ever more of our future earnings and ever more of our current purchasing power to a group of elitist bankers who don't have to play by the same rules as the rest of us. Economist Michael Hudson joins us to talk about just this. He wrote an article recently that gave some context to banking, reminding us that, once upon a time, kings and governments used to kill bankers that they didn't want to pay. So how did we get to where we are today, where bankers and banks are killing governments, moving their toxic assets onto the national balance sheets in return for fresh cash? And later in the show, Lauren will give the audience her take on the week she spent in Davos, what she learned, and what she thinks is worth sharing with the rest of us.

PROHIBITION Obama At Summit Rejects Ending The Failed War On Drugs By Legalization

How To Go To Heaven: www.jesus-is-savior.com www.google.com Portugal drug law show results ten years on, experts say (AFP) -- Jul 1, 2011 LISBON — Health experts in Portugal said Friday that Portugal's decision 10 years ago to decriminalise drug use and treat addicts rather than punishing them is an experiment that has worked. "There is no doubt that the phenomenon of addiction is in decline in Portugal," said Joao Goulao, President of the Institute of Drugs and Drugs Addiction, a press conference to mark the 10th anniversary of the law. The number of addicts considered "problematic" -- those who repeatedly use "hard" drugs and intravenous users -- had fallen by half since the early 1990s, when the figure was estimated at around 100000 people, Goulao said. Other factors had also played their part however, Goulao, a medical doctor added. "This development can not only be attributed to decriminalisation but to a confluence of treatment and risk reduction policies." Portugal's holistic approach had also led to a "spectacular" reduction in the number of infections among intravenous users and a significant drop in drug-related crimes, he added. A law that became active on July 1, 2001 did not legalise drug use, but forced users caught with banned substances to appear in front of special addiction panels rather than in a criminal court. The panels composed of psychologists, judges and social workers recommended action based on the specifics of each case. Since then, government ...

Expert: US policies worsen human trafficking

Camilo Perez-Bustillo, a professor of human rights in Mexico City, spoke to Al Jazeera on the dangers migrants face as they make the journey through Central America to the United States. Perez-Bustillo said decriminalising human trafficking would help stop the flow of drugs. "Just as we need to decriminalise drug trafficking, we need to decriminalise human trafficking, too," he said. "Those who can cross border without detection can also pass drugs without detection," he said. Camilo Perez-Bustillo said US economic policies have worsened the situation. "Since the North America Free Trade Association was launched 17 years ago, the number of undocumented immigrant labours to the US has spiked," he said.

The Indian government 'fully' supports 2009 decision to decriminalise gay sex. Following confusion in Delhi Supreme Court last week, a government representative has clarified they do not want to overturn the High Court's 2009 decriminalisation of gay sex. Condemnation from law-makers around the world and hundreds of thousands of signatures on a position has not stopped St Petersburg from pushing a bill through the legislature that will criminalise LGBT rights groups in the city. Gay sheriff Paul BaBeau may have more political problems to deal with now that it has been reported that he had a relationship with a male student during the time he was headmaster at DeSisto School in Stockbridge, Mass. more than 10 years ago. In less than 48 hours, more than 18000 people found and clicked 'Like' on a photo of US Marine Brandon Morgan arriving home from a tour of duty and leaping into the arms of his strapping boyfriend, Dalan Wells. Gay X Factor finalist Marcus Collins has given fans a tantalising taste of his debut album and it's already creating a buzz in the Twittersphere. The five-minute preview of the self-titled album on YouTube features original songs, as well as cover versions

Pinksixty News FRIDAY 18 NOVEMBER 2011

The Human Dignity Trust launched a global campaign yesterday to decriminalise homosexuality in the 80 countries where it is outlawed. A court case, scheduled to begin on December 5th has been brought by the gay Belizean activist Caleb Orozco. The California State Supreme Court has ruled that pressure group, ProtectMarriage can defend the current ban on gay marriage in court. Known as Proposition 8, the act removed a previous ruling that temporarily allowed gay marriage in the state. Benetton's new 'Unhate' campaign is doing its job as controversy rises over images of world leaders kissing each other. A picture of the Pope kissing a leading Muslim cleric has already been pulled after being deemed to have gone 'too far'. Scottish company, Bad Pony Media have been honoured in the 'Striding Out' Future 100. The Awards' encourage vision, ethical business practice and social responsibility by young entrepreneurs, addressing "people, planet and profit". And finally, People Magazine have named actor Bradley Cooper as this year's 'Sexiest Man Alive; a title previously held by Brad Pitt and Ryan Reynolds. He was quoted as saying, "Sometimes I can look great, and other times I look horrifying."
