Vietnam: deforestation and climate change | Global 3000

Vietnam is one of the world's leading exporters of shrimps. But the industry is exacting a high price. Mangrove forests have been systematically chopped down to make way for more shrimp farms, particularly in the Mekong Delta. The deforestation is destroying the habitat of many animals and affecting the lives of the people. And with coastal areas now free of trees, they are unprotected and at the mercy of the elements. Climate change has brought more powerful storms to the region and the sea level is rising, threatening an increasingly wide area. As part of the international climate initiative, experts from Germany are working with Vietnamese specialists to set up protection zones and replant the mangrove forests.

Science & Environmental Facts : Why Is Deforestation a Global Problem?

Deforestation is a global problem because the less trees there are, the most carbon dioxide that builds up in the atmosphere, which causes global warming. Amazon Deforestation & Slavery - Toxic - VICE

On May 24, 2011—the same day Brazil's Parliament voted to decrease logging restrictions in the country's Forest Code—married environmental activists Zé Cláudio Ribeiro and Maria do Espirito Santo were shot to death outside their house in the Amazonian state of Para. A month later we traveled to Zé Cláudio's hometown of Marabá, which was once in the middle of the rainforest and is now surrounded by miles and miles of clearcut cattle land. As the investigation into Zé and Maria's murders went nowhere, we drove into the forest to the site of the killings, followed the heavily armed men of Brazil's environmental protection agency as they busted up illegal timber mills, visited the militant squatters of Brazil's Landless Movement, met modern day slaves, and marveled at the lawless, violent atmosphere that permeates the town locals call Marabála (that means Mara-bullets).

GREEN (Palm Oil Deforestation) - Documentary by Patrick Rouxel

Documentary on the Indonesian rainforest, deforestation and orangutan extinction. It is a silent film (without narration, but with music) which addresses itself both to the Indonesians and the consumers of wood/paper/palm oil around the world. This important documentary was filmed in the fast disappearing Indonesian rainforest and is not narrated, however, its message is clear and frightening. The home of the Orangutan and many other wildlife species in Indonesia is being decimated at an alarming rate by consumer need and greed. The film features the widespread practice of 'slash and burn' to clear the lush rainforest to make way for extensive palm oil plantations which we, the consumer, support in our demand for our favourite foods, magazines, cosmetics, and, increasingly, biofuel. The practice has also seen Indonesia move into third place behind the US and China with regard to carbon emissions due to the uncovering of peat soil which has lain, undisturbed, below the tropical rainforest for centuries. The film exposes the illegal pet trade that thrives in Indonesia and the sick, despairing lives of those Orangutan who spend years, often all their lives, locked in small cages, suffering, alone. The story thread follows the fate of a female Orangutan who has been captured and brought in because her forest home has been decimated. She is one of the lucky ones -- most are slaughtered without mercy when caught. Her fate though, is not a happy one, as her trauma at the hands ...

Cambodia- Deforestation and Land Degradation

It is another corn harvesting season in Pailin, a province in northwestern Cambodia, and farmers are busy harvesting and packing the produce for buyers. A war zone during the Khmer Rouge era, today Pailin is a major agricultural center where corn, bean and cassava farms are the main lifeline for many residents like Nuon Thol. This plantation has provided me with the income that I need to support my family and the education of my four children, he said. More than 80 percent of the Cambodias population lives in the countryside and depends on subsistence farming. But land degradation and deforestation, a side effect of increased farming activity, has become a major environmental issue. The main cause of the loss of forest is the increase in the population said Deputy Governor Leng Vuth. We now have 70000 residents compared to 10000 a seven-fold increase in a 10-year period. In the past, Pailins main economic activity was gemstone mining. Today, that has shifted to agriculture, and approximately 40000 hectares of Pailins forests have been cleared and burned to make way for crops including corn, beans and cassava. UNDP, along with the Ministry of Agriculture, is addressing the growing environmental impact of farming by identifying factors that contribute to land degradation. This land management programme will educate farmers about appropriate farming techniques that insure sustainable land use. Beyond deforestation, there is an urgent need to reform farming techniques as a ...

Aerial Surveying of Madagascar's Deforestation - Conservation International (CI)

www.conservation.org As an aerial survey specialist, Daniel Juhn flies over the most beautiful places on Earth. He assesses forests and areas under threat. Forests are the "lungs of the earth" in that they release oxygen and absorb carbon dioxide, reducing greenhouse gases that cause global climate change. 20% of all greenhouse gas emissions come from the burning and clearning of forests, yet forests are cleared at about a rate of one acre per second. Amazon Rain Forest Deforestation Crackdown

CHAN: Deforestation in Brazil's Amazon Rain Forest fell over 20 percent in June. The drop follows an intensified crackdown on illegal logging and cattle ranching. STORY: Deforestation of Brazil's Amazon Rain Forest fell over twenty percent in June. Environment Minister Carlos Minc says government pressure has been driving deforestation down. [Carlos Minc, Brazilian Environment Minister]: "I think deforestation rates are still very high and I think it's unacceptable, that is, we are not celebrating here. But anyhow, it is less worrisome that the negative trend began to decline precisely in the months when we expected numbers to rise." Environmentalists are concerned that rising grain prices may lead farmers to expand their planted areas, pushing the agricultural frontier deeper into the forest. The Environment Ministry said cattle ranching occupies as much as 80 percent of deforested Amazon areas, where an estimated 25 million heads of cattle are raised. Last month about 10000 head of cattle were seized for illegal grazing. Eleazar Volpato a forest engineering professor at the University of Brasilia, said the government must promote more preventive measures. [Eleazar Volpato, Professor, University of Brasilia]: "We can't wait to act only after deforestation has already occurred and we also can't depend only on the Police. We must use instruments that promote (sustainable) activities in the rain forest." The government of President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva has increased ...
