Jeffrey Deitch & Theaster Gates: I believe in Places

For more than four decades now, Jeffrey Deitch has been a major player in the US art scene. The dealer, advisor, writer and exhibition organizer started his career in the New York of the 70s when the art community was still very small. Back then he was connected to the collectors, writers, framers and gallery owners as well as most of the rising artists at that time such as Jean-Michel Basquiat and Jeff Koons. Meanwhile Jeffrey Deitch himself has become a household name in the world of art. After successfully running Deitch Projects in New York for 14 years, he became the first gallery owner/private art dealer to run an American museum, the Los Angeles MOCA (Museum of Contemporary Art). During Art Miami Basel last December he took time out of his busy schedule to talk to us about what avant-garde can be these days. "One of the most interesting things about art today," he says, "is the changing status of the avant-garde. (...) For me, the biggest achievement in art is not to just make a fresh, compelling image, a new sculptural form. It's to expand the definition of what art can be and what an artist is. And that's what Theaster Gates is doing." Theaster Gates is a trained urban planner and sculptor, who works as and artist and director of the Arts and Public Life Initiative at the University of Chicago. In his performances, installations, and urban interventions, Gates aims to push positive community change by transforming spaces, institutions, traditions, and perceptions ...

Hitler Learns MOCA Job Goes To Jeffrey Deitch

Hitler in his bunker hopes that he will get the job as director of the Museum of Contemporary Art, Los Angeles (MOCA), but is told by his senior staff that the job has gone instead to the New York art dealer Jeffrey Deitch, known for his business dealings and embrace of spectacle. Upset, Hitler lashes out at MOCA's board of trustees, Deitch, some of Deitch's artists (or those he admires) and the man who saved MOCA, LA philanthropist Eli Broad.

Jeffrey Deitch Takes Hollywood - A Tour of the Art Guru's New Los Angeles Home

"After being appointed the new director of the Los Angeles Museum of Contemporary Art (MOCA) this January, former New York dealer and downtown impresario Jeffrey Deitch needed some digs on the West Coast. Seasoned aesthete that he is, to truly feel at home he needed to surround himself with the art he loves (click play above for a sneak peek of the pieces by Tim Noble and Sue Webster, Aaron Young and Andy Warhol, among many others). Deitch's new "movie star" home, in LA's Los Feliz neighborhood, isn't just any old Spanish revival house—it's the former residence of Cary Grant. (Meanwhile, another prominent figure in the art world is buying into Hollywood history: Larry Gagosian recently purchased Gary Cooper's old abode, in Holmby Hills.) Deitch is particularly interested in where art and entertainment merge. As part of his early activities at MOCA, he allowed his friend James Franco to film an episode of General Hospital within the museum; and the first show under his leadership was a major Dennis Hopper retrospective. For today's short, filmmaker Alison Chernick and food artist Jennifer Rubell toured Deitch's house—including his "super Tudor-pop" party room, as he calls it—and sounded out his theories on celebrity, his new vision for MOCA, and his belief that you need a painting of Jesus over your bed." www.nowness.com

Douglas Deitch/ED-MBC (3-11-2010)...CCC Public Comment (www.begentlewiththeearth.com)

Douglas Deitch, Executive Director-Monterey Bay Conservancy criticizes the Coastal Commission for it's negligence and lack of due diligence and professionalism in respect to the staff performance in the Commission's 2009 amendment of the existent Local Coast Plan ground water protections contained in Gary Patton's 1987 County Well Ordinance. www.pogonip.org This ordinance had required County declaration of a "ground water emergency" in Santa Cruz County continuously since 1998...until the Coastal Commission allowed it's amendment and Local Coastal Plan change at this meeting in 2009 at the behest of the Santa Cruz County Board of Supervisors. Mr. Deitch also repeats his allegation of fraud in the application and $16 million Coastal Conservancy funding of the Land Trust of Santa Cruz's application for funding and acquisition of the 488 Watsonville Wetlands property and asks that some official Coastal Commission investigation be commenced in this matter... www.santacruzsentinel.com which Mr. Deitch also characterizes as a "food security matter" caused by ground water overuse and decimation. Mr. Deitch also accuses both the California Coastal Commission and Coastal Conservancy of being intentionally negligent and complicit in the "greatest environmental catastropy, "unremdiable", in the history of the Monterey Bay Region..." and that would be the permanent loss and expropriation of billions of dollars of ground water resource loss through salt water intrusion through ...

SPARC: Great Wall of LA: Donna Deitch historical short film

1976-Present: The Great Wall of Los Angeles 1/2 mile long Mural/Education Project is one of Los Angeles' true cultural landmarks and one of the country's most respected and largest monuments to inter-racial harmony. SPARC's first public art project and its true signature piece, the Great Wall is a landmark pictorial representation of the history of ethnic peoples of California from prehistoric times to the 1950's, conceived by SPARC's artistic director and founder Judith F. Baca. Begun in 1974 and completed over six summers, the Great Wall employed over 400 youth and their families from diverse social and economic backgrounds working with artists, oral historians, ethnologists, scholars, and hundreds of community members.

Jules de Balincourt Premonitions at DEITCH

James Kalm is back in Soho at the Deitch Project for what might be the last exhibition in this location. As a longtime fan, it's a pleasure to bring viewers a bit of what is, to this point, the most ambitious painting show from this influential young artist. Combining odd scenes depicting a strange tropical vacation resort or ribbon strewn and pixilated versions of near abstract figures, these paintings are a mélange of techniques with a rich and sensitive palette, and intriguing textual headings . De Balincourt has been included in several noteworthy recent exhibitions including shows at PS1 and the Saatchi Gallery.

James Kalm attempts to visit Shepard Fairey's May Day exhibition, the final show at this location of the Deitch Project. However, the crowds are too thick to get in the door, so your reporter documents some of the goings-on outside the gallery including a brief chat with Mark Kostabi, and the arrival of a motorcycle gang. A few days later, Kalm returns to tour the exhibition at an opportune time, without the mobs, for a better viewing of the art.
