After Bailey discovers the interns and Denny's situation, she helps them confirm Denny should receive the heart.Alex travels with Dr. Hahn from Mercy West with the heart, scrubbing in with Dr. Bailey for Denny's transplant. However, after the heart has been inserted, it still does not begin to beat. Much to Denny and Izzie's happiness, Denny's transplant surgery is successful. During a visit, Denny confirms to Izzie that he meant his marriage proposal; she is the person he wants to sleep and wake up with, and do everything in-between with. Scared by the pace of Denny's emotions and of her own, Izzie leaves without answering. Izzie realizes that Denny is the only one who sees who she really is beyond her blonde, "pretty-girl" image. Rushing into Denny's room during his examination with Bailey, she accepts his proposal and leaves to get ready for the prom. Izzie arrives to the prom late, having changed her dress several times because she wanted to look nice for Denny. She meets a dateless Alex as she comes in, who compliments and stares at her as she walks away. Denny sits alone in his room, smiling and reading a magazine. In a split second, his smile disappears and his head falls backwards as his screen flatlines; dead by the time Izzie comes to see him.
