Digital Art Process - Medusa - Process Part 4

This artwork is a personal piece I'm painting in my spare time. It's based on the Greek myth of Medusa. Medusa started her life as an ordinary woman before she was cursed by the jealous goddess Athena due to her beauty. Medusa's cursed form was half human, half serpent. Her head was crowned with venomous snakes and her eyes turned any man to stone if they beheld her gaze. She was banished to a cavern on the edge of the world. Not content, Athena sent many 'heroes' into Medusa's lair in attempt to slay her once and for all. I want to depict her as a strong character, fighting for her survival against a tide of assassins. PLEASE DISCUSS: Digital art controversy.. Is it freehand?

I am trying to put together some vids for digital tutorials as well as some that talk about the advantage of digital as a medium. But there have been some out there who have had the misconception that the computer somehow "aides" the artistic process in a digital painting-- meaning that you cannot "freehand" DRAW this type of thing without the help of the computer. I personally am fascinated by the different perceptions of people who do not seem to truly understand the process. But here is a raw video excerpt for one of the little "documentaries" I will be editing together soon. The final vid will be examining the digital process as compared to the traditional process. Now, I must point out that I am simply scribbling a make-believe creature's eye on both digital and acrylic paint. THEY ARE NOT SUPPOSED TO LOOK IDENTICAL. The purpose of doing both of these is to primarily display the fact that they are both freehand, but obviously different mediums. (If I do a colored pencil sketch of something, and then an oil painting of the same subject- they are going to be different... Same scenario). So anyway--- I am posting this video to use the comment section as a forum and I'm inviting all of you to discuss your thoughts and opinions about what you see and how you feel about the digital vs. traditional debate. This is sort of some "research" to help me address certain things in my tutorials and documentaries that I will be creating. Fire away!

Cool Art: Digital Artists

Dryad - Digital Art Process - Part 1

Watch in HD! A Dryad is a kind of tree spirit. Symbolic of nature and usually connected to a particular type of tree. If the tree dies, so does the Dryad. For now, I'm focussing on getting the anatomy correct. Later I'll be adding a forest environment and possibly adding more botanical elements to her body to make her more unusual. Digital Art Tutorial [Beginners]

This tutorial is based off the program GIMP; however, Photoshop has all of the same features too. But, uh, I don't have Photoshop D: But GIMP is a great alternative, I guess. You can download it for free at www.gimp.org It's not something you buy, so don't think you are stealing. The site says " It is a freely distributed piece of software..." I learned these tips from several places across the internet. I hope this tutorial actually helps someone! Once you get past the basics, there are much better tutorials and speed paint videos you should check out. ---- It seems like everybody is asking, so - Yes, I used a digital art tablet. For this video, I used a Genius tablet. Not the best tablet, really. As it's aged 2-3 years, it has a glitch on the tablet and the drawings are starting to look like my hand is shaking. A lot of artists I hear reccomend Wacom Bamboo. The reviews seem to be better on it than the Genius tablet. Hope that helps everyone. ---- Just so you know, this is only an example. I don't really draw heads on stick figures! No D: A better look at my art can be seen at my deviantART account here crazy-over-anime.deviantart.com

Photoshop Digital Art Tutorial

This is a tutorial on how to paint realistic digital art, using a reference photo and Photoshop (or similar software). Step 1: Import your reference image. Step 2: Use "Poster edges" or a similar filter to get a nice clean vector/ line-art look. Step 3: Desaturate the reference image (make it black and white). Step 4: Create a new layer and paint (trace) over the outlines using a bright colour. Step 5: Once the outlines are complete, get rid of the reference photo and desaturate your traced lines. Step 6: Open the reference image again, (in a new window,) and fill in the skin texture and other colours by using the colour dropper (colour selection tool). Step 7: Use the smudge tool (medium pressure) for gradient effects, and nice sharp lines, such as strands of hair. Step 8:

The multiply method (color tut video 01) works best with brighter images or line-art and the color layer method (color tut video 02) works best for darker images as it will not effect white areas. Having your line-art or b/w drawing and the color on separate layers you can adjust the colors by doing: when working with color layer mode (color tut video 02), if the color does not look like what you have in mind then use image/adjustments/Hue/Saturation to tweak the color until you get the shade you need. You can lower the layer opacity to have less saturation too. when working with multiply layers (color tut video 01) you can adjust the colors by using image/adjustments/Hue/Saturation To get the best results you still can paint over on top of your image. The downside of working with multiply layers is that you can not make good use of the color-picker unless the background is completely white.
