Unequal Treatment Drives Disability Rights Movement

This is the VOA Special English Health Report, from voaspecialenglish.com | http New estimates show that more than one billion people have a physical or mental disability. Experts say almost one-fifth of them experience serious difficulties in their daily lives as a result of their disability. And disability rates are increasing as populations get older and more people get long-term conditions, like heart disease and diabetes. The estimates are in a report from the World Health Organization and the World Bank. The World Report on Disability says few countries do enough to meet the needs of the disabled. They face problems like discrimination and a lack of health care and other services. They have higher poverty rates and lower education levels than other people. This is true in both rich and poor countries. Cindy Lewis is the director of programs for an organization called Mobility International USA. Ms. Lewis says people with disabilities helped write the new report. One of its messages is that people with disabilities should not only receive services -- they should also help design and provide them. Ms. Lewis says that way they can become decision makers and policy makers. "People with disabilities are a huge and untapped resource for governments, communities [and] development programs. And that is a big problem that we are working on addressing." Ms. Lewis says in many countries, people with disabilities are organizing to support disability rights. "It's a very ...

An Interview with Fred Fay, Leader in Disability Rights Movement

Fred Fay has been a passionate and prolific advocate for the rights of people with disabilities for over 50 years. He was instrumental in the passing of the Americans with Disabilities Act in addition to countless other progressive developments for the disabled community. At age 16, Fred sustained a cervical spinal cord injury in a trapeze accident, and started using a manual wheelchair for mobility. At age 37, a cyst formed in his spinal cord, making it impossible for him to sit upright. Since then, Fred has used assistive technology, much of which he designed himself, to give him increased mobility and allow him to continue his important advocacy work. In this short film, friend Janna Zwerner interviews Fred about his life and achievements, both personal and professional.

To the Disabled People of Great Britain And Northern Ireland

To the disabled people of Great Britain. Our individual voices are too quiet to be heard, but collectively we can shout loud enough to drown out this tide of abuse against us. Disability Hate Crime, lack of full legal protection, people in care homes costing too much to be let out and not one political party willing to fight for us. We must emulate other successful civil rights movements and with polite determination take our place as equal members of society. Please send me your stories as together we are unignorable. Please email: thebrokenofbritain@gmail.com Stories will be posted to thebrokenofbritain.blogspot.com Please include what name you would like to be linked to your story. If you don't want to use your real name please can you include a pseudonym for ease of admin, things like 'scared in bristol' or 'afraid of cuts'. Thanks. McCain Disses Woman From Disability Rights Group

During John McCain's town hall meeting at the Denver Center for the Performing arts, a woman from a group called ADAPT (www.adapt.org says that they were in Washington DC in April and 40 people with disabilities were arrested. She said they came to McCain's office to ask him to support their legislation, the Community Choice Act that she says would end the institutional bias and allow people with disabilities to choose where they live and receive services. She asks him if he'll sign on to support the Community Choice Act. His pretty blunt answer is no and that he supported the Americans With Disabilities Act. From press reports a number of wheel chair bound participants left the meeting after McCain made his statement. I guess not everyone has a Sugar Momma like Cindy to take care of them and don't have to worry about ending up in a nursing home like John does.

Disability Pride Parade

Disability Pride is a film about a community fighting to be seen and heard, to be acknowledged as able and proud. The film weaves 'on the street' interviews with verite footage of the 6th Annual Disability Pride Parade in 2009 to convey human experiences that promote the belief that disability is a natural part of human diversity and can take pride in its heritage and culture. The parade, held every year in Chicago, is the first of its kind in the world and people travel far and wide to attend the event. The next parade is on July 24, 2010 and the filmmaker's hope that this film can persuade more people to attend and show their support for Disability Rights. We need YOUR SUPPORT!
