Documentary Photographer Daniel Milnor Photography Tips and Advice

www.silberstudios.tv Documentary photographer Daniel Milnor joins us today on the Marc Silber show to talk about his approach to photography and the work he loves to do. He loves focusing on documentary work, especially long-term black and white documentary projects, both domestically and internationally. In the field, Dan uses a very stripped down system of equipment. He often works with a single camera and a lens and occasionally mixes cameras and formats only when he teaches. Typically, he advises against mixing formats, such as color and black & white photographs. You only have a split second to catch an image when analyzing a scene, and having too complex a set-up may cause you to miss the moment. Developing the idea of a project's story is crucial, so he always does his research beforehand. Nowadays, it is easy to do documentary work by going out into the field and winging it, but when you have a theme in mind, it's better to perform research for a more complete picture. BTW, a big thanks you to the folks at Calumet San Francisco for helping us out with the shoot. Thanks to WPO for their assistance with the interviews.

Documentary Photography: Teru Kuwayama's Iraq & Afghanistan Photos

We're near Stanford University with our guest, Teru Kuwayama, a veteran documentary photographer who frequently finds himself in the war zones of Iraq and Afghanistan. He has carved a nomadic path across Asia and the Middle East, seeking out remote, undeveloped, and conflicted areas. His haunting photos of Iraq and Afghanistan are shot with, as he puts it, "semi functional Polaroids and toy cameras". Teru describes his experiences as an embedded photojournalist and some of his current projects dealing with conflict zones. His photography has been featured in a stream of publications including Outside, Newsweek, Fortune and The National Geographic. Teru's photographs have received numerous awards and citations, including grants from the Alexia Foundation for World Peace, and The New York Foundation for the Arts. He is presently on a John S. Knight Fellowship at Stanford.

Documentary Sports Photography: Elizabeth Kreutz' Sports Photos

Documentary photographer Elizabeth Kreutz loves travelling around the world to photograph people and sports in order to tell stories from a unique angle. Elizabeth Kreutz, a documentary sports photographer and member of the SanDisk Extreme Team, loves telling stories through her photography. She has captured images from sports events around the world, such as the Winter and Summer Olympics, Tour de France and Baja 1000. She enjoys capturing behind-the-scenes moments that compose a special story that people don't see all the time. As a sports photojournalist, Elizabeth has to shoot photos of athletes moving at top speeds. Due to this finite window of opportunity, she can't afford to be stalled by long buffer times that prevent the shot. She needs to be able to trust completely in her cards, which allows her to spend more time connecting with the subject and capturing the moment. When she uses SanDisk Extreme memory cards, she doesn't have to worry about running out of space for all her sports action shots. As she's grabbing a shot of Lance Armstrong crossing the finish line, she only has a split second to capture that shot and make it count.

The zula - street documentary photography by: Felix lupa

The life of the homeless- the dark side of society This story has no beginning nor can its end be seen. They come to the street for a variety of reasons. Most of us can cope with the hurdles they initially encounter. With a little help we get over the difficulty and go on. But for them help just had not come, and their lives took a turn into that road full, of pits, which often leads to the abyss. A whole population lives in the street, a small "people" seek a country: lone wolves, couples, childhood friends, fathers and sons, mothers whose children were taken away by the social authorities and given to be adopted, alcoholics, drug addicts, schizophrenics, refugees from mental institutes, work migrants, refugees from normative society, and people who just prefer to live in the street in order to avoid child and wife payments, or heavy debts they are not able to pay. Numerous groups roam the streets from one place to anther, drop anchor for a while and go on to another place. Their numbers are constantly on the increase, and friction is inevitable, sometimes the result is strong friendship, more often- hard violence, sometimes ending with death. This is the story of simple individuals who have wrapped their past in layers of lies, fables and anecdotes so thick that often they themselves are unable to tell truth from fiction. The truth they keep buried deep inside in a corner of their heart- a burning memory which cannot be shared with anybody, be it for shame, or for pain ...

RTHK The Works June 22. TVB Pearl Painters and other visual artists tend to stylise and filter. But since the invention of film and photography, we've been able to get a relatively unfiltered view of reality, even the reality of times long before we were born and places we've never seen. A new exhibition at the Heritage Museum concentrates on this documentary aspect of photography, on how it captures the moment, and -- sometimes -- the social conditions of which it's a part.

Picture Perfect: Rob Hornstra

In this episode of Picture Perfect, VBS goes on assignment with Dutch photographer Rob Hornstra to Sochi, Russia as he continues to captures the city as it exists before it is thrust into the international spotlight as host of the 2014 Winter Olympics. This time around, Hornstra is photographing lounge singers in restaurants, cabarets and hotel lobbies. An advocate for "slow journalism", the Netherlands-based documentary photographer produces work over long periods of time, involving himself in the changes that occur over the breadth of years. His work is characterized by a stylized rawness, with a large dose of intrinsic engagement. In 2014, the Olympic Games will take place in Sochi, Russia. Never before have the Olympics been held in a region that contrasts more strongly with the glamour of the games. Just 20 kilometers away is the conflict zone Abkhazia. To the east, the Caucasus Mountains stretch into obscure and impoverished breakaway republics such as Cherkessia, North Ossetia and Chechnya. On the coast, old Soviet sanatoriums stand shoulder to shoulder with the most expensive hotels and clubs of the Russian Riviera. Hornstra and writer/filmmaker Arnold van Bruggen have joined together on The Sochi Project to document the changes in and around Sochi over the course of the next five years. The Sochi Project will be a dynamic mix of documentary photography, film and reportage about a world in flux; a world full of different realities within a small, but extraordinary ...

Photographer's Style - Documentary Part 1

I filmed this film on the 7D for my graduate documentary class. As I began to study cinematography a few years back, I became fascinated with the history of photography, especially, but not limited to, high fashion photography. Photographer's Style was filmed/edited in the style of the ASC produced "Cinematographer Style". Photography is such an interesting art, and I wanted to merely learn more about it, opposed to telling a story in the traditional sense. I also didn't want to get to bogged down with the technical side of photography, but rather the STYLE of each photographer, and how they approach their subjects. In my studies, I've learned that artistic success in photography and cinematography, and in all art, isn't tied to technical knowledge alone, but rather heavily determined by the unseen passion, inner turmoil, and vision of the artist. If a person learns something that they didn't know before watching this film, then I will have done my job. :) Directed/Shot/Edited by Drew Maw Photographers' Websites: Brian To briantophoto.com Jason Christoper JasonChristopher.com Eugene Biscardi EugeneBiscardi.com Elijah Star ElijahStar.com

A Lesson in Ballen Photography

Roger Ballen takes us on a journey through 25 years of his work documenting the marginalised rural communities of South Africa. Here for the 17th Biennale of Sydney, Roger asks some of the big questions in documentary photography discussing objectivity and how to assemble the intricate details that tie a photograph together. Ballen's images have been described as dark, strange and humorous. He discusses the undefined territory between fiction and reality and how nothing is repeatable. Photojournalism and Photography Techniques: Tips From Ed Kashi

Award-winning photojournalist Ed Kashi joins us today on the Marc Silber Show to share tips on advancing your photography. His photojournalism work has covered a wide range of global issues and been featured in magazines such as The National Geographic, TIME, and Newsweek. Ed sees himself as a long-form visual storyteller and dedicates himself to telling stories of social or political significance. He often refers to the phrase "candid intimacy" for his work - people often look at his work and ask "How do you get so close to the people, but make it look like they don't know you're there?" When a photo achieves "candid intimacy," the observer is able to see into the soul of the subject. It is tough to achieve candid intimacy, especially when people are adverse to having their photos taken. More and more of his work is being shot from his hip or his shoulder, to avoid provoking people who are not favorable to the lens. Sometimes the best magic appears in images that are shot without staring into the viewfinder. Ed emphasizes that it is crucial to maintain an open heart and open mind, instead of settling for what one sees on the surface. Cameras are a passport into another world that you would never experience otherwise.
