Don Hertzfeldt's third student film, LILY AND JIM was shot on 16mm in 1997 at the age of 20. Its partially improvised vocal performances by Karin Anger and Robert May helped the short win twenty-five awards, including the Grand Prize at the New Orleans Film Festival. Robert and Karin were reunited in 2006 for a special audio commentary on the BITTER FILMS: VOLUME ONE DVD anthology. The DVD also features an animatic of very funny deleted and unused improvised dialogues from the original 1996 recording sessions -- long enough to make the short film all over again -- as well as hours of extra materials from Don's other films. If you're interested in playing the guitar part, the video is annotated with tabs.
