How to design like an architect

howtoarchitect.com www.powhow.com Learn with Doug via LIVE Webcam Classes at Powhow.com! Hi, Im Doug Patt and this is How to design like an architect. I thought the best way to talk about design would be to create a dream home for someone, but first, lets talk about the design process. An architect, like any design professional draws on a wellspring of information. How we design is based to some extent on what we know. What we know can be based on the school we went to, the books weve read, the magazines we like to look at, where we grew up, our friends and relatives, the occupations weve held and in general, our life experiences. A professor named Edmund Bacon (actually the father of the actor Kevin Bacon) told me something once that I will never forget. He said, Its in the doing that the idea comes. That is, we must sit and work through something before we can find the best way to solve a problem. Solving a design problem is essentially taking what we know and putting it together with that particular challenge. When an architect sits down to problem solve they frequently sketch. Sketching is one of the best ways to work out the solution to a problem. And I believe that its exactly what Edmund Bacon meant when he said its in the doing that the idea comes. Before we design our dream home I need to give you a little insight into one of my favorite architects. The emergency temporary shelter kit was developed in response to the need for low cost, temporary refuge thats easily shipped and assembled. The shelter kit packs flat and can be shipped in large quantities all over the world on a moments notice. All of the parts can be manufactured from completely recycled materials. What makes it unique is that its quick and easy to set up requiring no tools or fasteners for assembly. Once assembled the kit achieves rigidity through gravity and simple architectural connections. Based upon the highly visible events including worldwide hurricanes, tornadoes, earthquakes and tsunamis, as well as war and genocide, the shelter kit can provide relief for a family from the elements in such disasters. The kit was designed for temperate climates but could be modified to provide relief in colder locations. The shelter, unlike tents or metal shacks, can be anchored off the earth to provide relief from ground elements. It is rigid and strong unlike a site-constructed fabric structure. Two people can assemble it without any tools or fasteners at a rapid pace and it has the potential for a relatively long lifespan depending upon the construction material. The kit is designed on a 4 feet by 8 feet module ensuring it could be made from any number of rigid materials. However, it could be manufactured from completely recycled materials ensuring in impoverished areas ...

How to write like an architect

howtoarchitect.com www.powhow.com Learn with Doug via LIVE Webcam Classes at Powhow.com! Hi Im Doug Patt and this is how to architect. Today well learn How to write like an architect. The basic drafting tool for an architect when working by hand is a parallel rule. You can also use a t-square. Ill be using an ames lettering guide to create the lines for the lettering. First were going to create our horizontal lines using the lettering guide. The guide has a variety of spacing options to create just about any combination your looking for. I will also be using a small triangle. Ive added tape to this one for ink lettering to avoid smearing. Ill also be using a .5mm pentel drafting pencil and a paper mate, flair pen for the letters. Ive created a small grid here to give me some guidance when I lay out the letters. Id say the most important thing to remember about hand lettering is that your letters need to seem animated while still appearing orderly and neat. I think this is achieved by using a few conventions. For example, youll notice the letters have some amount of incompleteness. The second diagonal on the A does not follow all the way to the guide line, the bottom of the B or D isnt complete, The bottom line on the E starts in front of the vertical. The second thing is that all the horizontals in the letters are drawn by hand, not using the parallel rule. They all sit at a slight angle making them dynamic and yet uniform. Youll also notice that I use the ruler for all ...

So you want to be an architect - Part 2

howtoarchitect.com www.powhow.com Learn with Doug via LIVE Webcam Classes at Powhow.com! Hi. My name is Doug Patt. And this is So You want to be an Architect? A seven part series exploring the architect. This is lesson two. What does an architect make? On the surface this sounds like a dumb question. An architect makes buildings. But if you look below the surface youll see that the answer is much more meaningful. Ralph Waldo Emerson (who lived from 1803 1882), was a well-known writer, philosopher and poet. He said of Greek architecture, it is the flowering of geometry. Translated, Emerson was referring to the Greek architects elaboration and mastery of shape and form. Anne Louise Germaine de Stael (who lived from 1766 1817) is a little known Swiss author who lived in Paris and abroad. She is quoted as saying architecture is frozen music. In simple terms her comment means that architects make a kind of static harmony of sound. Philip Schaff (who lived from 1819 1893) was a Swiss born, Protestant theologian. He said, architecture is a handmaid of devotion, a beautiful church is a sermon in stone. Elaborating a bit on Shaffs comment we can imply that architecture, like a sermon, is also a kind of message or story. And finally John Ruskin an author, poet and artist (who lived from 1819 1900) said of architecture that the mere sight of it, may contribute to (his) mental health, power and pleasure. In other words architecture is an Inspiration. So, lets move beyond the ...

howtoarchitect.com www.powhow.com Learn with Doug via LIVE Webcam Classes at Powhow.com! Hi. Im Doug Patt and this is So you want to be an architect. A seven part series about the profession of architect. This is part 3. What does an architect learn? Architecture is an amazingly complex field and an incredible education in itself. Theres a lot that goes into any building and the architect should know their way around every inch. The architect also needs to understand people and for that matter society. So lets take a look at some interesting opinions about the spectrum of subjects an architect learns about in a lifetime of practice. Plutarch, a greek historian and writer once said, Philosophy is the art of living. Architecture surrounds us all and in a way dictates or reflects our way of life. Weather its a TeePee or a mansion, buildings represent what we believe is truth. Mark Twain said, clothes make the man. Naked people have no influence in society. This is funny but also true. Just as we need clothing, we need buildings that clothe us. The sociology of man is reflected in our buildings in what we believe, how we work and how we live. Albert Schweitzer (1875 - 1965) once said, Man is a clever animal who behaves like an imbecile. Now we all know weve got good sides and bad, but the reality is the psychology of man is manifest in architecture from prisons to massive stadiums. We make what we need to accomodate who we are. How to design a water tower house

howtoarchitect.com www.powhow.com Learn with Doug via LIVE Webcam Classes at Powhow.com! Welcome to design a dwelling - volume 3. Im Doug Patt. This is the series where we pick a site and put a house on it. Water towers are everywhere and they come in all shapes and sizes. They store water and create pressure in the distribution system because of their height. These Marshall Wells water towers seemed very unique Their shape and color are quite appealing as is the fact that they sit one right next to the other. Theyre perfect site for design a dwelling. So I started thinking about the new home as a bridge that spanned the gap between the two structures. The potential panoramic view was also really important so a series of 360 degree balconies are a must. I also thought it would be really neat to maintain the architecture of the towers on the interior of the building by leaving them exposed as well as visible from the exterior of the new home. So, remember, this exercise is simply to describe what an architect might be thinking about in a schematic way if cost and schedule were in no way an issue. It also assumes that anything is possible. So to back up, on an earlier iteration I struggled with some kind of structural support below the building. Ive decided rather, that Im not going to worry about structure here because its obvious to me that we could create some kind of hidden support for the building if money were no object. So, I overlaid the drawing on the photo. The ...

Im Doug Patt. This is perhaps one of the most famous homes in the world created by an equally famous architect. Fallingwater also known as the Edgar J. Kaufmann Sr. Residence is a home located in Bear Run Pennsylvania and was completed in 1937. It was designed by architect Frank Lloyd Wright. The home served as a weekend retreat for the Kaufman family until 1963 when it was donated to the Western Pennsylvania Conservancy. This home and its architect are well know for a multitude of reasons, one of which is the incredibly way Wright was able to conceive and carry out a design that so perfectly integrates into its landscape. The building sits above an active waterfall and cantilevers itself in all directions, much like the stone and landscape of a natural waterfall. Its materials, forms and colors integrate visually and yet set them apart enough to amplify the existing surrounds and waterfall. Unbelievably, the original design was sketched just before Wrights meeting with the Mr. Kaufman. Construction was also fraught with many challenges regarding the structural integrity of the cantilevered porches and Wrights desire for simplicity and unencumbered construction. In the end the house serves as a lasting example to the architects incredible vision and the ability to integrate ...

howtoarchitect.com www.powhow.com Learn with Doug via LIVE Webcam Classes at Powhow.com! This is How to make a Timbuk2bag. Im Doug Patt. This video entry is about this messenger bag. This messenger bag was made by Timbuk2, the messenger bag company out of San Francisco. Its a one of a kind. The special component of this bag is the plastic fabric panel down the middle. I added the design to the fabric with permanent markers. We call this panel material Reclaim, its patent pending and it all started with a project my business partner worked on while he was at Stanfords Institute of design. Brian Witlin and I started a product development company back in 2005 called RootPhi. During that time, Brian moved forward with a fabric product idea and started making wallets. A good friend of his who was working with Timbuk2 saw the project and thought it might be a good idea to try it with some of their bags. Brian worked tirelessly to turn out enough fabric for bags that were eventually displayed in their store in San Francisco. The bags got lots of press and appeared in a number very popular blogs. We were even interviewed by CNN. But eventually the cost of giving our company a hand with product development was too much and we parted ways with Timbuk2. But before we did, Brian made this one of a kind bag for me. He had sent me a couple plastic fabric panels and said go bananas with the artwork. So I did. How to design a bridge house

howtoarchitect.com Welcome to design a dwelling - volume 2. Im Doug Patt. This is the series where we pick a site and put a house on it. Other than a medieval anomaly or a draw bridge with a small structure for operation its not very likely youll see a house built on a bridge any time soon. With that in mind this bridge site at the Grand Canyon is perfect for a house. Any building placed on this structure would be able to take advantage of the thrilling view and if designed properly the vista would be completely unobstructed. So, I did some thinking about the building and I like the analogy of creating a home that is something like a cork to a wine bottle. In simple terms just as a cork is round and fits the round neck of a bottle, the house would be rectangular, fitting the rectangular cut out shape of the structure. As noted in previous episodes, Im always more inclined to go modern and this site lends itself to that aesthetic. To get an idea of how big this house is going to be we can gauge the scale of the photo from the people on the bridge. The first design I completed followed my original sketch fairly closely. The configuration stayed pretty true the idea of a rectangular shape with simple cut outs and geometrical forms for openings and windows. However, the design fails to take any real advantage the most important factor of the site has to offer, the view. Now remember, This exercise is simply to describe what an architect might be thinking about in a schematic ...

How to design a cliff house

howtoarchitect.com www.powhow.com Learn with Doug via LIVE Webcam Classes at Powhow.com! Welcome to design a dwelling - volume 1 Im Doug Patt. This is the series where we pick a site and put a house on it. Youve probably seen cliff dwellings if not in person, then most likely in your social studies textbooks. Youve also probably seen houses set way up on a cliff like out in California. Well today were taking a cliff site, which happens to be in the town of Hastings in East Sussex County, Southeast England. The picture were using today was taken in about 1972 and is apparently just below Hastings Castle, which was, built in 1066 by William the conqueror. This is obviously a dramatic site. The scale of the photo is slightly difficult to make out but in reality its superfluous. This exercise is simply to describe what an architect might be thinking about in a schematic way if cost and schedule were in no way an issue. It also assumes that just about anything is possible, which is the way I like it. So, I did some sketching yesterday thinking about the site. Im always more inclined to go modern and this site definitely lends itself to that aesthetic. I think as always if you can, its important to take advantage of the view. So well get lots of windows and perhaps even some cantilevered porches. I think it would also be fun to make the building look like its part of the side of the mountain. George Costanza, architect

howtoarchitect.com www.powhow.com Learn with Doug via LIVE Webcam Classes at Powhow.com! Hi. I'm Doug Patt and this is George Costanza, architect. As I sit here working away at my computer Im thinking about one of my favorite television programs. Seinfeld was the self-professed show about nothing that ran for 9 years (1989 1998). George Costanza was one of the main characters played by Jason Alexander. George, a neurotic self absorbed, incredibly funny character, once describe himself as lord of the idiots. Furthermore he was described by his friend Elaine as a short stocky slow witted bald man. Whats imprinted colorfully on my mind is that on a number of occasions George describes the fact that he always wanted to be an architect. The fact that George was both a self-professed idiot and had an interest in being an architect has always made me laugh. So Im getting out my ruler and cutting board to create a bit of fiction here. Lets first separate ourselves from reality to ask the question, what about the profession of architecture was such a draw for George? Frank Lloyd Wright, a famous architect (1869 - 1959) said, noble life demands a noble architecture for noble uses of noble men. His statement most certainly implies architecture is a noble pursuit. For the George, a comical pursuit indeed. I also think the work of an architect enjoys a bit of mystery. How to design an iPhone home

howtoarchitect.com www.powhow.com Learn with Doug via LIVE Webcam Classes at Powhow.com! Welcome to design a dwelling - volume 4. Im Doug Patt. This is the series where we pick a site and put a house on it. I was reminded of the childrens story Gullivers travels the other day so Ive decided to build on the theme of altered scale. Todays site is my garage and well use this spare tire Ive had laying around. Now, since one tire is a little tough to do anything with lets imagine weve got say three. The challenge now is that the tires are small, so lets imagine theyre gigantic kind of like Gulliver in the land of Lilliput. Now lets imagine the tires are the framework for our new house. Well attach all three with some kind of vulcanized rubber panels and add some windows across the tread surface to get light inside. Once inside weve got some decorating to do. Flat screen TVs have become very popular of late, as have mobile phones. So lets put the two together. Well super size the iPhone Ive got in my pocket and design the house around that. Once the phones mounted on the wall its like a big screen TV. Now it might be interesting to consider using a rolling ladder or step stool to touch the screen icons. Another advantage of this larger phone is that the speakers at the bottom of the phone would be just the right size for surround sound and surfing the web at that scale would be a whole new experience. So lets get down to business and discuss some of the features of our new home ...

How to draw with lead

howtoarchitect.com www.powhow.com Learn with Doug via LIVE Webcam Classes at Powhow.com! Hi. Im Doug Patt and this is How to draw with lead. Today Ill be creating an abstract pencil rendering of machine parts. Ill be using a .5mm Pentel mechanical pencil with HB leads. You can also use a slightly larger diameter lead with a .7mm pencil, but I like the thinner line. The other type of pencil you may choose is a lead holder drafting pencil. These are a little trickier because youve got to keep them sharpened. Ill also be using 4 different lead pencils. These are all Staedtler Mars Lumograph pencils. Theres the 2h the lightest and hardest I will be using, an HB which is the typical hardness on most pencils, and a 2b and 4b both progressively softer and darker. Ill be using a small sized adjustable triangle, a ruler and drafting tape. I also have some templates I really like to use as well as a compass, an electric eraser and metal eraser shield. So, Ive cut out a small rectangular piece of Strathmore 400 series drawing paper. This paper is a little thin for my taste, but it has a nice texture and its acid free so it should have a nice lifespan. Im a classically trained artist so I like to use the golden section and the root rectangles as the drawn armature on my page. I do this in to help me organize and develop my drawing but thats for another episode. The piece of paper is the same proportion as a rootphi rectangle. Architectural prison views by genius

howtoarchitect.com Today's How to is all about How to appreciate Giovanni Battista Piranesi. Say that three times fast. Piranesi lived from 1720 to 1778. he studied architecture but focused much of his life on creating works of art. He is famous among architects for making some of the most compelling etchings of all time. Heres why By the way, an etching is different than a simple drawing done on a piece of paper. An etching is done on a piece of metal, glass or stone, whereby the surface is covered with a protective coating, the coating is carved away with a cutting tool or needle. The entire finished piece is then bathed in acid which in turn burns away the exposed material, leaving an etching. Many prints can then be made from this one piece of material. Piranesi did etchings of both real subjects and ones he created. His work is interesting because its so captivating. Particularly the 16 views of a subterranean prison he made. His work has influenced movements in art and the way architects and artists think about space, particularly in the prison sequence where the spaces are layered one on top of the other. You actually feel like your inside the image. The lighting is dramatic and ominous. The stone forms are overwhelming. The mood is foreboding. The etchings are rich with the imagery of time and nature devouring the subjects. The drawings are inspiring precisely because they are rich with imagination. And that brings us to the idea for the day. Imagination. Albert ...

It will eventually screw up the surface of your drawing desk and mess with your line quality when your pencil hits the divots you created with knife. Now, these cutting mats come in many sizes. This one is 18x24. Ive been using it since college. ItIt tucks away nicely and its the right size for most detailed work. These are the xacto tools I use. I like this one because its easy to handle and good for cutting small parts. And this one is a little more industrial, but I like it for just about any job. They come in tons of shapes, sizes and materials its your choice. I keep my blades turned over or pushed down when Im not using them. This is no joke, these blades are sharp and will mess you up. Ive got the scars to prove it. Now about straightedges or ruler. I never use plastic or wood. When your cutting along these materials the knife edge can cut into them because theyre soft and destroy the edge or ricoche off and cut you ...

So you want to be an architect - Part 4

howtoarchitect.com www.powhow.com Learn with Doug via LIVE Webcam Classes at Powhow.com! Hi. I'm Doug Patt and this is So you want to be an architect, Part 4. What does an architect use? Aside from the wide variety of items an architect uses to physically create the drawings, specifications, models, and paperwork necessary to make buildings the architect uses elements of style to create buildings. Narrowed from a gamut of items I believe you could say the elements of style, when it comes to buildings are scale, form, complexity, and material. Lets look at examples of each. Much has been made throughout the history of art and architecture over proportion from DaVincis canon of proportions to Le Corbusiers modular man. How buildings reflect & accommodate human scale is a key component of architects work. From the beginning architects like Palladio used ratio and proportion found in nature to create harmonious buildings. From Frank Lloyd Wrights cozy interiors to the grand palace of Versailles. to the Hancock skyscraper of Boston who's scale overwhelms the famous trinity church but was designed to reflect it's beauty nonetheless building can be scaled to the human figure or scaled in a more ambiguous manner. Ambiguity is key for Jean Nouvels Arab world institute where the elements of the elevation make scale extraordinarily vague. So scale is one way architects relate a building to the user. In the last few decades architecture has increasingly been able to take advantage of ...

A house for (Converse) Chuck Taylor

howtoarchitect.com www.powhow.com Learn with Doug via LIVE Webcam Classes at Powhow.com! Today Im going to design a house for Chuck Taylor. You may not know the name but youll definitely know the shoe. Chuck Taylors name is on the patch on the shoe worn by millions. Now Mr. Taylor has been gone since 1969 but the legend lives on. I love chucks and Ive been wearing em since high school. Today I still wear em but with my golaces instead of regular shoe laces. Chuck Taylor was a basketball player that wore the Converse all starts and eventually became a salesman for the Converse shoe company. He quickly suggested some changes to their basketball shoe that were eventually implemented and the rest is history. His name went on the signature patch on the side of the shoe. Unfortunately Chuck Taylor never got rich because of the changes he made, but it didnt matter. As a salesmen he drove across the country selling shoes out of his Cadillac and being a friend to many. So in memory of a legend, I thought it would be perfect to design a house for Chuck Taylor. I should say first that the design & the artwork is heavily influenced by my favorite Italian Futurist, Antonio Santelia. The design will take its formal cues from the unique form fitting shape of the Chuck Taylor shoe. First, I thought it might be appropriate to put the house on top of a mountain to symbolize his heroic contribution to timeless style. The home makes its mark on the landscape, just as Taylor has done in the ...
