The centuries old tradition of classical dressage provides a systematic method of schooling the horse to make him pleasant to ride and to prolong his useful working life. Many dressage movements look like dances, with the horse and rider totally in synchrony with each other. Dressage is also good for the horse; it produces a balanced, supple, strong and athletic horse. Dressage training can also be elevated to physical therapy. The trainer can overcome many natural weaknesses in his horse, especially natural crookedness, by appropriate gymnastic exercises. So dressage is very important for the health of the horse. Dressage is based on the natural movements of the horse. If the trainer wants to have a correct view of the mechanism of the horse's movements, he must observe the young green horse in the pasture. He'll discover the activity of the individual limbs and of the coactions of all the limbs during forward movement. He will then be convinced that Mother Nature has endowed the young horse with everything that he has seen in well trained dressage horses. Kody and I attempt Preliminary test #2 in August 2007. He had been warming up quite nicely but lost impulsion as soon as we entered the ring and never really got it back. I drastically need to improve my reinsmanship, especially through corners, and we both need to get more consistent but it really wasn't a bad test if you don't count the pooping and then rushing instead of lengthening! LOL I feel our walk section requires some explanation for the specialists who are viewing this. Our transition to walk at C was slightly late but not as tardy as it looked from that angle. As I came off the rail at MI found that in the smaller 20x40 arena (we've been using 30x60 all season) E was much further right than I was used to and I had to keep turning instead of creating a smooth departure. We did break to trot during the lengthened walk- I pushed him too hard because I know what he's capable of and felt he wasn't really pushing from his hindquarters as I know he can. I should have let it be of course, but I hate to allow him to get away with stuff in the ring. Like the fun new not-halts at X, once he figures out he can do something he'll try it over and over until stopped! You can't hear it through the music but I really got after him verbally for all that backing and wiggling and we went back and schooled in the arena for a long time when the tests were over. Anyway, once we returned to the rail I would normally have transitioned up to working trot about half-way between E and K <b>...</b>
