Dromore, County Down, Northern Ireland

A short video of Dromore, County Down, Northern Ireland. Dromore is a small market town twenty miles south of Belfast on the main road to Dublin. It's name derives from the Gaelic Drum Mor, which means 'Great Ridge.' This great ridge is the Norman Castle (Motte and Bailey), known locally as The Mound. The video is taken from the top of the mound, overlooking the town, and begins by looking at the mound from the bottom. Dromore also contains the Cathedral Church of Christ the Redeemer, one of the Church of Ireland (Anglican) Cathedrals for the diocese of Down and Dromore - the other being in Downpatrick. The River Lagan flows through the town on its way from Slieve Croob in the Dromara Hills to Belfast and out to the sea. Dromore was the scene of the first Williamite battle in Ireland, as the Williamite Council of the North stood against the advancing Jacobite troops, just over one year before the Battle of the Boyne. The Jacobites were victorious, but William was able to pass through Dromore on his way to the Boyne in 1690. I hope you enjoy this view of the town and the surrounding countryside.

The Castle of Dromore - Maureen Hegarty

An Irish lullaby I started singing a long time ago and I never tire of it... beautiful melody and beautiful words. I love lullabies but I think this and 'The Gartan Mother's Lullaby' are my favourites. The Castle of Dromore The October winds lament Around the Castle of Dromore, But peace is in her lofty halls, My loving treasure store. Though autumn leaves may droop and die A bud of spring are you. Sing hush-a-bye loo, la loo, lo lan, Sing hush-a-bye loo, la lo. Bring no ill winds to hinder us, My helpless babe and me, Dread spirits of the Blackwater Clan Eoghan's wild banshee. For Holy Mary pitying us In heav'n for grace doth sue. Sing hush-a-bye loo, la loo, lo lan, Sing hush-a-bye loo, la lo. Take time to thrive, my rose of hope, In the garden of Dromore. Take heed, young eaglet, till your wings Haave feathers fit to soar. A little rest and then the world Is full of work to do Sing hush-a-bye loo, la loo, lo lan, Sing hush-a-bye loo, la lo.

Once again, I present you with my shoddy singing. Kayaking in Dromore Woods - Greg & Louise

We decided to kayak the lenght of Dromore Lake (next to Dromore Woods) and also head north (well, south a bit first) to the bridge over the road by the enterance of the nature reserve. It was really windy and the current at the narrow channels was very tough. There was one section that we had to climb out of the yaks to drag them over rocks but we got there. It was a great day. It seems that while the rest of the country was soaked with rain we enjoyed sun and even some blue skies at times. I'd do this trip again at a drop of a hat. We covered about 10km. Next time we're up there I'd like to head south and see if we can reach Ennis :)

"THE CASTLE OF DROMORE " (guitare celtique) Jean-Pierre ; Vidéo Lill

The visit is not that of "the castle of Dromore"... We used only the title of the musical work. In the middle of these old stones, it was almost possible to hear the lyrics of the song "The castle of Dromore". But this is quite normally, because everyone says that the forest around the ruins is haunted We visited the ruins of the 12th century (on the video) located in the "Black Forest", near the place where we live, and it was easy for us to cross the small bridge across the time that leads us to "the Castle of Dromore" a Castle of Ireland, but also a beautiful musical work "The castle of Dromore" published by Harold Boulton in 1892. Lyrics The Castle of Dromore The October winds lament Around the Castle of Dromore, Yet peace is in its lofty halls ...

The Castle of Dromore

For my niece, Katie Bown A beautiful tune composed by Bernard Van den Driessche from near Paris,France. This tune is also called "October Winds". Too heavy with the reverb! I'm still learning how to record. Check out Bernard's music - I've discovered many treasures on his site and some wonderful original compositions. His music is influenced by John Fahey and evokes many memories for me; his guitar music has a lot of heart. The lullaby 'Cáislean Droma Mhor' is one of the oldest extant Irish songs. This tune is sometimes called 'October Winds'. There are at least four castles named Castle of Dromore or Dromore Castle in the counties Down, Kerry, Limerick and Tyrone. A nice sung version: www.youtube.com Played on harp: www.youtube.com And beautifully sung by Maureen Hegarty: www.youtube.com These words were added in 1892 by by Sir Harold Boulton: "The October winds lament Around the Castle of Dromore, But peace is in her lofty halls, My loving treasure store. Though autumn leaves may droop and die A bud of spring are you. Sing hush-a-bye loo, la loo, lo lan, Sing hush-a-bye loo, la lo.
