American Drug War: The Last White Hope: Pre Release Cut

American Drug War The Last White Hope 35 years after Nixon started the war on drugs, we have over one million non-violent drug offenders living behind bars. The War on Drugs has become the longest and most costly war in American history, the question has become, how much more can the country endure? Inspired by the death of four family members from "legal drugs" Texas filmmaker Kevin Booth sets out to discover why the Drug War has become such a big failure. Three and a half years in the making, the film follows gang members, former DEA agents, CIA officers, narcotics officers, judges, politicians, prisoners and celebrities. Most notably the film befriends Freeway Ricky Ross; the man many accuse for starting the Crack epidemic, who after being arrested discovered that his cocaine source had been working for the CIA. AMERICAN DRUG WAR shows how money, power and greed have corrupted not just drug pushers and dope fiends, but an entire government. More importantly, it shows what can be done about it. This is not some 'pro-drug' stoner film, but a collection of expert testimonials from the ground troops on the front lines of the drug war, the ones who are fighting it and the ones who are living it. After 4 years of production including several sold out test screenings in New York, Austin & Los Angeles, the final version of American Drug War "the last white hope" is locked and loaded.

Ending the Global Drug War: Voices from the Front Lines

"Ever since the War on Drugs, everything has hit the fan," says Romesh Bhattacharji, former Narcotics Commissioner of India. Rather than continue the unnecessary and costly drug war, Bhattacharji advises the United States to simply "Relax, take it easy, [and] tolerate." Last month, at the Cato Institute's "Ending the Global War on Drugs" conference, Bhattacharji's sentiments were echoed by ex-drug czars, cops, politicians, intellectuals, liberal and conservative journalists, and even the former President of Brazil. Reason.tv attended the event and spoke with a number of the featured speakers, including: Glenn Greenwald, Salon.com Mary Anastasia O'Grady, Wall Street Journal Tucker Carlson, The Daily Caller Luis Alberto Lacalle Pou, Speaker of the House of Deputies, Uruguay Leigh Maddox, Law Enforcement Against Prohibition; University of Maryland School of Law Enrique Gomez Hurtado, former Senator, Colombia Larry Campbell, Senator, Canada Romesh Bhattacharji, former Narcotics Commissioner, India Eric Sterling, Criminal Justice Policy Foundation Harry G. Mexico film tackles stark reality of drug war

A new Mexican film called Miss Bala has been praised for breaking new ground for its portrayal of the brutality of the country's drug war. Miss Bala has also been noted as one of the few films in Mexico to depict President Felipe Calderon's drug war as corrupt and futile. The filmmakers said it is impossible to portray the drug war without shedding light on corruption. Inspired by a true story, the film is about a beauty contestant who was forced to work for a ruthless drug cartel boss. Al Jazeera's Adam Raney reports from Mexico City. The Drug War in Guatemala: A Conversation with Giancarlo Ibarguen

"I blame the war on drugs in the United States for what is happening here in Guatemala." --Giancarlo Ibarguen Most of the cocaine shipped north from Central and South America these days travels through Guatemala and into Mexico before eventually crossing the border to the United States. The value of that cocaine, even before it enters the US market, is approximately $40 billion a year. That's nearly the size of Guatemala's entire economy. The drug cartels in Guatemala act with impunity and effectively control much of the country. As Guatemala's President Alvaro Colom recently told Al Jazeera, "The drug traffickers are much better armed and financed than our military and our government." Guatemala, as a result, has become a very dangerous place to live. What's the solution? According to Giancarlo Ibarguen, president of the Universidad Francisco Marroquin, the US government should end its war on drugs.Approximately 5 minutes. Produced by Paul Feine and Alex Manning. 40 Years of Drug War Failure: LEAP's Neill Franklin

On June 17, 1971 President Richard Nixon launched the modern-day drug war, an effort perpetuated by every one of his successors. As the reform group Law Enforcement Against Prohibition (LEAP) documents in a new comprehensive study, the drug war has destroyed lives and property, shredded the constitution, and distorted American education, health care, and even foreign policy. That's why, notes LEAP, fully 75 percent of Americans and 69 percent of police chiefs agree that the drug war has failed. Reason's Nick Gillespie talked with LEAP's Executive Director Neill Franklin, a retired major in the Maryland State Police. As Franklin explains, he was one of the most bellicose drug warriors around until a comrade was killed during an undercover operation. The best way, argues Franklin, we can pay tribute to his fallen friend - and all the other people whose lives have been laid waste by a war on drugs that has caused far more bad than good - is to turn away from prohibition and embrace regulation and control similar to that used for alcohol. Shot by Jim Epstein and Joshua Swain, who also edited. For more videos and information about drug policy, go to reason.com For more information on LEAP and to read "Ending the Drug War: A Dream Deferred," go to www.leap.cc

Mexico drug war victims call for justice

The northern city of Chihuahua is one of Mexico's worst hit areas for drug-related violence. Known for its beautiful scenery and the local Tarahumara people, the state is also the heart of Mexico's violent marijuana and heroin industry. Some villages in Chihuahua have lost over half their populations as the fight intensifies between drug gangs for key smuggling routes. Many residents have pushed for the government to prosecute those who killed their loved ones, but have given up on it after many years of waiting for justice. Al Jazeera's Adam Raney reports from the village of Creel, a tourist hub that has also been affected by drug-related violence.

Drug War Profiteers: Book Exposes How Wachovia Bank Laundered Millions For Mexican Cartels

www.democracynow.org - As protests continue against Wall Street and the nation's biggest banks, Democracy Now! speaks to British journalist Ed Vulliamy, author of "Amexica: War Along the Borderline." Vulliamy exposes how one bank, Wachovia, made millions in the Mexican drug war. At the time, Wachovia was the nation's fourth-largest bank — it has since been taken over by Wells Fargo. "You can't drive around Mexico with hundreds of billions of dollars in cash in a truck. It has to be banked," Vulliamy said. "What I found was that it is coming into the United States, into the banking system." The real story is that the audience reaction is not getting the same weight as "let him die" or cheers for Rick Perry's death penalty cheers.

Ron Paul: Drug War In US Has Racist Origins

Ron Paul's presidential campaign has spent the last two weeks dealing with the political consequences of the reemergence of racist newsletters that went out under his name in the 1980s and '90s. During that same time period, however, Paul also laid out an historical analysis of the racist roots of the drug war that accurately and honestly reflects its origins. In 1988 Paul made a presidential campaign stop at the National Organization for the Reform of Marijuana Laws while running on the Libertarian Party ticket. "What was so bad about the period from 1776 to 1914?" Paul wondered, referring to a time in American history when drugs were legal on the federal, and, in many towns, local level. "In the 20th Century, the doctors, like all business people, decided that there ought to be a monopoly. 'If you wanted a little bit of codeine in your cough medicine, it would be much better if you come to me so I can charge you $25 for a prescription.'" Paul, in a speech aired at the time on C-SPAN went on. "Before the 20th Century there was none of that and it was the medical profession as well as many other trade groups that agitated for the laws. And you know there's a pretty good case made that this same concept was built in with racism as well. We do know that opium was used by the Chinese and the Chinese were not welcomed in this country," Paul said. "We do know that the blacks at times use heroin, opium and the laws have been used against them. There have been times that it has ...
