Teacher Sings Barney Amidst Drug Cartel Violence

Transcript by www.newsy.com BY MEGAN NOE You're watching multisource world news analysis from Newsy. When Martha Rivera Alanis became a kindergarten teacher, you can bet this wasn't in the job description. As gunfire rang out outside the Mexican school last week, Rivera calmed her students with a song from Barney. The YouTube video has gone viral since friends posted it to YouTube, fueling discussion by the BBC and others about the drug war's traumatizing effects on regular citizens. "'The truth is, I was a little bit scared, but my children helped me through it.' She may be today's heroine, but for many in Mexico, the episode is a painful reminder that the violence from organized crime has become a reality that they can't but learn to live with." The shootout in Monterrey killed five, adding to the nearly 40000 killed in Mexican drug violence since 2006. Rivera serves on a security committee for teachers-- a team that is becoming all too necessary, says Al Jazeera. "In those towns and cities, an increasing number of children and teens are living through gun battles among rival gangs who are killing each other over control for key drug trafficking routes. Some children are being taught what to do if they find themselves in the crossfire. This teacher tells her students that when shootings start, they should watch out for stray bullets." A Times Record News writer says teachers shouldn't have to be drug warriors...and she offers a solution. "Before Congress spends another ...

DEADLY CAR BOMB EXPLODES IN BORDER CITY JUAREZ

Ciudad Juarez, Mexico - People in the embattled border city are on edge after a car bomb exploded downtown Thursday, night killing three people and injuring at least seven others. A day after the explosion, investigators sifted through debris for evidence and confirmed it was a car bomb they suspect was detonated with a cell phone. The bomb went off after police arrived at an apparent crime scene. There was a secondary blast when the vehicle's gas tank exploded. "I could feel the vibration. It vibrated strongly," said Miguel Angel Saldivar, an accountant who was working at his office two blocks away. He was too afraid to take a look last night, but he came the next day and brought his young son to the street blocked off with yellow crime scene tape. Juarez residents were stunned by this latest escalation in the drug war that has claimed more than 6000 lives since 2008, when rival drug cartels began a battle for the border city. In a message hand-painted on a wall, the Juarez cartel claimed responsibility for the blast and warned, "This will keep happening to authorities who keep supporting Chapo," the leader of the Sinaloa cartel who has locked bloody war for smuggling routes that cut through Juarez to Texas. The message included a threat of "more car bombs." The bomb Thursday night killed two federal police and a bystander at the scene who government employees said worked in an office building on the street.. There was a fourth body on the scene, a man investigators ...

Mexican Drug Cartel Violence Against Americans

It was just a matter of time. Drug cartels in Mexico have targeted US citizens working for the US Government. And succeeded in killing some of them. How much more drug war failure can the US stomach? Isn't it time to try alternatives to outright prohibition? From what I can see all we've done is recreate Al Capone except now the murders are in Mexico instead of Chicago!

www.instablogs.com Mexico drug cartel violence Six police and two jail guards were killed in Mexico on Saturday when gunmen tried to free drug cartel suspects from a prison convoy. Police in the western state of Nayarit came under attack as they drove out of an airport where they had picked up nine suspected members of the Beltran Leyva cartel, including senior member Jeronimo Gamez, known as "The Cousin". Gamez was arrested in late January and is accused of being the main organizer in purchases of cocaine from Colombia for the Beltran Leyva gang, one of Mexico's most violent. The gunmen after a foiled attempt to free the prisoners, escaped in three trucks.

Spring Breakers stay away from Acapulco

Acapulco, Mexico (NTN24) -- Mexican drug cartel violence scares off thousands of American college students from Acapulco's iconic beaches during the lucrative Spring Break season. Normally thronged with scores of partying spring breakers, miles of golden beaches in Mexico's Acapulco are empty. A traditional hotspot for rowdy American college students on vacation, many are steering away from the famed shores as the country's bloody drug war closes in on the popular tourist destination, threatening the travel industry. Hotels are reporting sluggish trade and many restaurants and bars heavily dependent on American tourism are facing ruin as the Pacific city's infamy for violence grows. Acapulco's annual hotel occupancy rates sank to 44 percent in for first nine months of 2011, a drop of 4.5 percentage points on the same period last year and down from 55 percent in 2006. With 2012 expected to be another slow year for the local tourist industry, many residents long for Acapulco's heyday of packed bars and beaches. "Since the beginning of the year they have not returned here because they have gone to other areas, not Acapulco. What we want is an Acapulco that is full (of tourists) but with this Acapulco we are seeing, it is very bad now," said local, Epifanio Ramirez. Not helping the situation, earlier this week the Texas Department of Public Safety issued a safety warning against travel to Acapulco citing drug violence and the unpredictable nature of cartel attacks in the area ...

Guadalahara summit focuses on global recession and drug cartel violence

The leaders of the United States, Canada and Mexico have concluded their brief summit by pledging more cooperation to fight the swine influenza A-H1N1 virus and illegal drug cartels as well as to strengthen the North American economy. President Obama, Mexican President Felipe Calderon and Canadian Prime Minister Stephen Harper have left Guadalajara with a promise to work together to prepare for the next outbreak, expected later this year. The three leaders also concentrated on boosting the regional economy, which has suffered in the global recession. Mr. Obama promised aggressive and coordinated action to restore economic growth. The president and the Canadian prime minister reaffirmed their support for Mexican President Calderon's war against illegal drug cartels.

Mexico wrestles with new wave of drug cartel violence

On Monday, Gunmen ordered a priest and two seminarians out of their vehicle and shot them dead in a drug-plagued region of western Mexico. The three were killed as they drove through the town of Arcelia in Guerrero state to organize a spiritual retreat. Police, said no arrests have been made and no motive has been determined for the killings, which took place Saturday, June 13. Roman Catholic clergy in Mexico have complained that they are increasingly the targets of attacks and extortion demands as Mexico continues to wrestle with waves of drug cartel-fueled violence.

What is the White House Hiding About ATF Gun Scandal

The White House continues to block testimony of a key witness in the gun scandal known as Fast and Furious that contributed to the death of a US border agent and hundreds of Mexican citizens. The operation was conceived as apolitical stunt to actually increase the American guns used in Mexican drug cartel violence so that the Obama administration could have cover for using executive orders to impose gun restrictions without congress. Even with the exposure of the disastrous program, Attorney General Eric Holder has used the program as a reason to call for more gun restrictions.

Mexico Drug Violence: Spring Break Travel Warning

As spring break nears, the US government is warning Americans to stay out of much of Mexico because of rising drug-cartel violence -- and tells travelers to one of Mexico's most popular beach destinations to stay close to their hotels. A newly expanded travel warning from the State Department says that US travelers should avoid four entire states, as well as large areas of ten others, most in the north and west of the country. The most popular destination affected by the warning is Acapulco, where the State Department urged Americans not to travel more than two blocks inland from the boulevard that runs along the popular beaches. A warning issued last April listed 10 states as areas to avoid, but the State Department said the expanded warning, and stronger language, are a response to a rising level of drug-related violence that has claimed American victims, with crimes including "homicide, gun battles, kidnapping, carjacking and highway robbery." According to the State Department, the number of US citizens reported murdered in Mexico increased from 35 in 2007 to 120 in 2011. The death toll, coupled with the rising number of kidnappings and disappearances in the country, led the Department to take a stronger stance. In its warning, the US instructs travelers to "defer non-essential travel" to the states of Chihuahua, Coahuila, Durango and Tamaulipas, as well as parts or most of Nuevo Leon, San Luis Potosi, Sinaloa, Sonora, Zacatecas, Aguascalientes, Guerrero, Jalisco ...

Everyone knows Fast and Furious scandal was to justify gun ban

Obama knew. Holder knew. It was a political ploy to give credence to the claims made by Obama, Holder, Clinton and Napolitano that gun sales in the US needed to be restricted because of drug cartel violence in Mexico. The facts disproved their claims so they decided to invent some with this crazy gun smuggling operation that has led to hundreds of Mexican deaths and the murder of a US Border Patrol agent. Issa- gun ban purpose of Fast and Furious - usACTIONnews

usACTIONnews reported back in February 2011 that the purpose of this "gun walking" program was to give political cover to the administrations gun ban by executive order. Rep. Darell Issa now confirms that this "Rahm Emanuel" crisis was created by Obama's DOJ so they could cite an increase in American guns used in Mexican drug cartel violence. It backfired. Weapons that the DOJ allowed to be smuggled to the drug cartels have been used to kill a US border agent, Mexican officials and countless Mexican citizens.

DEA Head: A Thousand Dead Children Means We're Winning War On Drugs

Daily News @ RevolutionNews.US — (WASHINGTON) Producing and distributing illegal drugs is a profitable business, because there will always be a lot of demand and because illegality allows you to charge a great deal of money. That illegality also means that the people who produce and distribute the drugs are generally not responsible corporate citizens. So thanks to our expensive, terribly ineffective and endless war on drugs, lots of people are dying. The Washington Post recently reported that the victims of Mexican drug cartel violence increasingly include children, who are being specifically targeted in order to terrorize people and intimidate potential business rivals The children's rights group estimates that 994 people younger than 18 were killed in drug-related violence between late 2006 and late 2010, based on media accounts, which are incomplete because newspapers are often too intimidated to report drug-related crimes. [...] Government figures include all homicides of people younger than 17, capturing victims whose murders might not have been related to drugs or organized crime. In 2009, the last year for which there is data, 1180 children were killed, half in shootings. This article is actually almost a week old, but I did not notice, until it was highlighted by Jonathan Blanks, this astounding quote from America's top drug warrior: US and Mexican officials say the grotesque violence is a symptom the cartels have been wounded by police and soldiers. A Message to David Simon: Want to make a show about the US - Mexico Border?

My name is Sky and I am a fan of HBO's "The Wire," "Generation Kill," and "Treme." I think David Simon did a great job on "The Wire" in showing a slice of life of the American city and the different people who make it run. It is "The Wire" which inspired me to take a look at my own home and to start coming up with an idea of a story about the US - Mexican border. My working title is "Border Town" and what I have been looking at and writing about is the smuggling (guns and money south, people and drugs north), immigration and race relations, and the broader American conversation on undocumented immigrants, Mexico, and the effect of the Mexican drug cartel violence. I would like to show Mr. Simon around Calexico, California, and Mexicali, Mexico. To show him the hundred year old Chinese community here. To introduce him to people who can share stories of life here and on other parts of the border. I think the time is right to tell this story, that audiences want to see and learn more about the border, about Mexico and Mexican-Americans, and even the crime that is going on. Also, I want to show the New River (a polluted river of sewage coming out of Mexicali, flowing north into the US and empyting into the Salton Sea), and hopefully bring jobs into Imperial County. Thank you.
