Drugs - Mexico

February 1995 In March 1994 the heir to the Mexican presidency Luis Donaldo Colosio was assassinated in Tijuana. Only now is it becoming clear who was responsible. This in-depth report shows the extent to which Mexico's drug cartels have infiltrated Mexican politics. The corruption goes to the heart of the country's ruling political party, the PRI. We speak to Eduardo Valle (The Owl), Mexico's special prosecutor for the Federal Attorney General, now in hiding. Even the police are involved and exclusive footage shows the carnage left after police factions battled for control of profits and sectors of the drug industry. A former cartel insider turned FBI informer confirms the corruption. We profile PRI secretary-general Jose Francisco Ruiz Massieu, assassinated in September 1994 because he knew too much. His surviving wife says that President Carlos Salinas de Gortari helped them until he too came under pressure from the party to stop messing with Mexico's $30 billion a year drug industry. Mexican drug cartels' new method for entering illegal substances in the US

According to the DEA, 90 percent of drugs that enter the United States come in through Mexico. Recently, federal investigators uncovered a new method drug-cartels were using to move their illegal contrabands from Ciudad Juarez, Mexico into El Paso, Texas, using innocent people. Univision correspondent Tifani Roberts traveled to the conflicted area to investigate and filed this report.

Mexico: high body count from drug violence likely in 2012

www.euronews.net Drug gangs in Mexico continue to defy the army's efforts to reduce violence. Mexico today is seeing death tolls higher than in the world's conventional warzones. In a new report, US analysis group STRATFOR says the Los Zetas cartel has become the most powerful. Founded by deserters from army special forces, Los Zetas also includes former police officers. It has gained supremacy through brutality. The latest regional report from Stratfor refers to coercion by "silver or lead" - meaning bribery or bullets.

Mississippi Highway Murders; Police hunt for suspected fake Cop in highway shooting deaths

Tunica Miss.-Police fear someone is posing as a police officer in Mississippi and pulling over victims before killing them, after two highway murders that were thought to have occurred at random were connected Monday. Lori Anne Carswell, 47, was shot and killed on Highway 713 -- a popular route for people traveling along the interstate to and from work in Tunica -- after leaving Fitzgerald's Casino about 2:00am local time Friday. On May 8, 74-year-old Thomas Schlender was shot and killed about 1:30am local time while driving southbound on I-55 near Batesville, Miss. "There are some similarities between the two incidents, mainly the fact they happened alongside a Mississippi highway," Mississippi Bureau of Investigation director Lt. Col. Larry Waggoner said, according to The Commercial Appeal. "The concern is that someone is posing as a law enforcement officer and that is how these vehicles end up on the side of the road."

Gun Battle Erupts In Sinaloa Killing at Least Five People

A shootout between military and an alleged drugs gang left at least five dead on Thursday in Sinaloa located in Northern Mexico. The gunfire took place as military pursued armed men travelling in adapted police vans. As the battle escalated, some of the criminals fled the scene on foot leaving behind one of the two trucks. The second vehicle then caught on fire, with the suspected drugs and criminals still inside. Guns, bullets, communication devices and protective helmets were found inside. There were also signs that the truck has been customized so guns could be fired from the inside. Sinaloa state is home to a cartel run by Joaquin "El Chapo" Guzman, one of the government's most wanted criminals.

Fast and Furious Falsehoods

mediamatters.org In her new book, Fast and Furious: Barack Obama's Bloodiest Scandal and its Shameless Cover-up, Townhall news editor Katie Pavlich offers up a number of false and misleading claims about the ATF's fatally flawed Operation Fast and Furious. In doing so Pavlich baselessly suggests that high-ranking Justice Department officials were aware of that operation's use of the tactic of gunwalking, in which agents knowingly allowed guns to be trafficked across the border to Mexico in order to identify other members of a trafficking network.

16 dead in Mexican shootings

www.euronews.net At least sixteen people were killed in a series of shootings on Thursday in the Mexican coastal state of Veracruz, where drug-related violence flared up earlier this year. At least 11 victims were killed by an armed gang in the towns of El Higo and Tampico. The five armed men were then chased down by security forces and shot dead. Police have not yet commented on a potential motive for the killings but the state has been rocked by violence for several months, apparently stemming from a dispute between two rival drug gangs.
