Migrant Express Part 1: Good-bye Dushanbe

Thousands of migrants travel from Tajikistan to Russia each year in search of work. For many, the trip begins with a grueling four-day train journey from Dushanbe to Moscow, during which they endure police inspections, cramped quarters and brutal heat. RFE/RL correspondents Mumin Shakirov and Alexander Kulygin traveled with a group of Tajik migrants on one such journey, experiencing the same hardships and recording the stories, hopes, and fears of four people seeking work in Russia. In the first part of the series, we meet two migrants, judo instructor Muhammed Ali and schoolteacher Jamshed Nabiev, who say goodbye to their families and friends in Dushanbe before they board the Dushanbe-Moscow train.

THEATRE PADIDA: (DUSHANBE, TAJIKISTAN) 2010

ABA ROLI has retained the Theatre Padida, a well-known Tajik troupe, to produce and perform a theatrical production that addresses issues of gender equality. Theatre is a powerful medium in Tajikistan, especially in areas with limited access to television, radio or print media. The performances, which will occur simultaneously with the legal clinics, will thus supplement the program targeting rural regions. www.abanet.org
Dushanbe Tea House

In 1987, the city of Dushanbe, Tajikistan presented the city of Boulder, Colorado with a traditional Tajik choihona (teahouse), the only one of its kind in the Western hemisphere. For three years, 40 artisans created the decorative elements, which were then assembled by Tajik artists in Boulder. Creative collaboration draws distant cultures together.
