I Mother Earth - One More Astronaut

===Lyrics=== One more astronaut in black skin Of universe One more travellin' man With heavy tired eyes, feeling cold Thinking around the clock of drinking On the job, of the powdered food And piss bags, never having sex and growing old Headspace...alive and painless, Weightless and almost sane I close my eyes, I become the sky Headspace...alone and shameless Can't wait to find the faces I left behind in a troubled time Back home It gets so lonely you know Weeks and months alone chasing Sleep and space junk and the dying Stars I've known and loved Through true decline Of the five billion minds or so Through mudslides And earthquakes, the blue one holds And rolls along One more astronaut in Endless old universe with One more second chance at Wondering why he's here at all Bold are the ones who Come over the line to fall over The horizon...never ones to fade away Then it hit me, this Cosmic pull and energy It kinda makes me wonder If I'll ever make it Back home

What an Astronaut's Camera Sees

Watch this and other space videos at SpaceRip.com An intimate tour... in 1080p... of Earth's most impressive landscapes... as captured by astronauts with their digital cameras. Dr. Justin Wilkinson from NASA's astronaut team describes the special places that spacemen focus on whenever they get a moment. We start with the coast of Namibia in southwestern Africa, the very dry desert coast of the Namib Desert. You can see a cloud band butting up against the shore and some straight sand dunes in the lower left of the picture. Yeah those are big red sand dunes that the astronauts say is one of the most beautiful sites that you can get when you're flying. Coming into the view on the left is an impact crater right in the middle of the picture, right about now and some wind streaks. We know where this area is because it's a bit unique. We've got a major dune field coming into the picture on the left there the Oriental Sand Sea, as it's called in French, and on the top is the Isawan Sand Sea. This is the island of Sicily with cloud over Mt. Etna, so you can't quite tell there's a big volcano in the middle of the picture right now. And there's the toe of the boot of Italy coming into the picture from the left. See a good example of sun glint on the right with the sea reflecting the sun. This is the smooth east coast of the Kamchatka peninsula again. As you move inland it gets even more striking as a picture because of all the volcanoes on this peninsula and the snowy mountains ...

Is There Gravity In Space? (Why Are Astronauts Weightless?)

If you've seen footage from the International Space Station or any of the space shuttle missions, you know that astronauts float around as they orbit the Earth. Why is that? Is it because the gravitational force on them is zero in space? (Or nearly zero?) The truth is that the strength of the gravitational attraction is only slightly less than it is on Earth's surface. So how are they able to float? Well, they aren't floating - they're falling, along with the space station. They don't crash into the Earth because they have a huge orbital velocity. So as they accelerate towards the Earth, the Earth curves away beneath them and they never get any closer. Since the astronauts have the same acceleration as the space station, they feel weightless. It's like being in a free-falling elevator (without the disastrous landing). YURI GAGARIN 50th Anniversary of First Man In Space April 12, 1961

www.theregister.co.uk Space flutes salute Yuri Gagarin By Lester Haines Posted in Space, 12th April 2011 08:53 GMT NASA astronaut Cady Coleman and Jethro Tull founder Ian Anderson hooked up late last week to pay homage to Yuri Gagarin when they whipped out their flutes for "the first space-Earth duet". Coleman is currently aboard the ISS as part of the Expedition 27 crew. Anderson was on tour in Perm, Russia, and took a moment to join the musical salute to "rocket heroes": The tune is an extract from Bourree, which Jethro Tull played while on a US tour during 1969, as Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin stepped on the Moon. Anderson fan Coleman has one of her idol's flutes with her aboard the ISS, as well as her own instrument. She's also got a penny whistle and flute belonging to Irish group the Chieftains. She said of space flautism: "It is really different to play up here. I've been having the nicest time up in our Cupola. I float around in there. A lot of the times I play with my eyes closed." Coleman isn't the first astronaut to play a flute in orbit. Ellen Ochoa (see pic, above) tickled the keys back in 1993, when she was aboard Discovery on its STS-56 mission. Unless there's something they're not telling us, Yuri Gagarin didn't have a flute to hand on 12 April 1961 when he became the first man in space as his Vostok 1 spacecraft took him on a 108-minute orbit. Time magazine declared: "Triumphant music blared across the land. Russia's radios saluted the morning with the ...

Astronaut's View

A NASA astronaut on the Space Shuttle Endeavor brought space back down to Earth. Astronaut Don Pettit took over 85 time-lapsed videos of Earth from his stint on the International Space Station to highlight features of the changing planet. "There is phenomenology that happens on a timescale that you can't see in real time," he said. "It occurred to me that making time-lapse movies on the space station would bring out things that you normally don't observe." Pettit also wanted to capture what it feels like to be in space. "You feel like you're on a frontier," he says. "I like to define a frontier as a place where your intuition does not apply. It's a place where the answers are not in the back of the book. As a result, a frontier is a place that's rich in discovery." Space has been called a frontier before, of course -- "But it's not the final frontier." Frontiers can be anywhere, he says, from under the lens of a microscope to the bottom of the ocean. Space "will only be the final frontier when human beings stop looking at our world and wondering what's going on." Here are some of our favorite time-lapsed videos of Earth from space. Above: Out of all his footage, Pettit says this video, encompassing a sunset, a moonrise and the northern lights, is one of his favorites. The camera took one image every 15 seconds, so this 38-second video captures about 9 and a half minutes of real time. Because the space station and its crew orbit Earth once every 90 minutes, they see 16 ...

Newton's Third Law of Motion: Astronauts in Outer Space

www.myspace.com NASA scientists and engineers should probably have predicted that if an astronaut applied force to open or close a valve, the valve would apply the same amount of force to him, but in the opposite direction. After all, nearly 300 years ago, Isaac Newton presented what came to be known as his third law of motion, which says that for every action there is an equal and opposite reaction. We experience these conditions on Earth; if we lean heavily against a wall, the wall pushes back with a force equal and opposite to our lean. (To illustrate the wall's opposing force more vividly, imagine leaning against it while wearing roller skates.) On Earth, gravity and friction provide the stability we need to resist the forces exerted on us during everyday tasks. In contrast, orbiting astronauts must struggle against conditions of "weightlessness."

Former Astronaut says Aliens are Here

25th July 2008 LAKE WORTH, FL -- Dr. Edgar Mitchell is one of only 12 people who walked on the moon, but it's child's play compared to the intergalactic shuttling he says is going on between alien planets and earth. "I don't know how many or how they're doing it. But I believe they've been observing us for some time. We see these craft all the time," says Mitchell. The Lake Worth resident is a firm and vocal believer in the presence of aliens on earth. How many civilizations out there? Billions and billions of stars in the galaxy and it doesn't take but a few planets circling around stars to create quite a few civilizations. Mitchell spent 9 hours and 17 minutes walking on the moon as part of the Apollo 14 mission in 1971. He suggests alien crafts are surveying parts of the country where nuclear testing was done including Roswell, New Mexico where he believes an alien spacecraft crashed back in 1947. He says the government and military covered up the discovery of the spaceship and the four alien bodies found in the desert.- www2.wptv.comFollow UFOs and Alien Life on Twitter @ twitter.com Disclaimer: I don't own any of the material used in this video. NASA's Gemini UFO sightings - Astronaut "VTR" transcripts from the days before Apollo

Before the Apollo program would ever be able to make the journey across the cis-lunar void to the Moon, NASA's astronauts first needed to learn how to fly, work, and live in space. Between 1965 and 1966, NASA flew an aggressive series of two-man missions into low-Earth orbit, where they practiced and tested many of the flying techniques, spacecraft systems, science and living skills that would be required to ensure that the voyage to and from the Moon was conducted as safely as possible. The flight program that NASA implemented in order to accomplish these lofty goals was known as Project GEMINI. In a mere 20 months time, 16 NASA astronauts flew a total of 10 missions aboard the GEMINI spacecraft, orbiting the Earth over 600 times while acquiring a wealth of space experience that in the following years would serve to help make the upcoming Apollo lunar program such a resounding success. The GEMINI astronauts were some of the first men to explore this new ocean over our heads that is known as 'space', and they did indeed see some amazing sights up there during their flights. Aboard each GEMINI spacecraft was a piece of equipment known as the "Voice Tape Recorder" (VTR). The purpose of the VTR was to give the astronauts the ability to verbally record any thoughts, comments, or observations throughout the course of each flight, primarily during the periods when they were not in radio contact with one of the MSFN (Manned Space Flight Network) ground stations spread out at ...

Earthrise, Then and Now

Forty years ago, on Dec. 24, 1968, astronauts on Apollo 8, having made the first human passage around the moon, were stunned to notice an "Earth Rise." In 2007, an HD camera aboard Japan's Kaguya satellite videotaped earth 'rising' and 'setting.' Set to music by Peter Rundquist, the images bring home the lonely, extraordinary nature of this "pale blue dot." Visit www.nytimes.com and www.jaxa.jp for more info. After consulting with my friend Andy Chaikin (http the definitive Apollo historian, I found out that confusion over who exclaimed about the Earth view has been cleared up. It was Bill Anders, not Frank Borman. Andy says he'd stake his (significant) reputation on this. The official NASA transcript still says "Anders or Borman"....

God Is an Astronaut - Forever Lost

Produced with CyberLink PowerDirector 9 All Is Violent, All Is Bright is the second studio album by Irish post-rock band God Is an Astronaut, released in 2005. God is an Astronaut are a 4 piece who hail from Glen of the Downs, Ireland. Taking their name from a line in Clive Barker's film 'Nightbreed', the band was formed by twin brothers Niels Kinsella and Torsten Kinsella. After recording their first demos, and with numerous labels offering deals (yet looking for the band to add vocals to their music), they instead decided to set up their own label 'Revive Records' to release their debut album 'The End of the Beginning' in 2002. This crucially allowed the band to remain in complete creative control. www.myspace.com Home is a 2009 documentary by Yann Arthus-Bertrand. The film is almost entirely composed of aerial shots of various places on Earth. It shows the diversity of life on Earth and how humanity is threatening the ecological balance of the planet. The movie was released simultaneously on June 5, 2009 in cinemas across the globe, on DVD, Blu-ray, television, and on YouTube, opening in 181 countries. Baraka is a 1992 non-narrative film directed by Ron Fricke. The title Baraka is a word that means blessing in a multitude of languages. The film is often compared to Koyaanisqatsi, the first of the Qatsi films by Godfrey Reggio of which Fricke was cinematographer. Baraka was the first in over twenty years to be photographed in the 70mm Todd-AO format.

Astronaut builds LEGO space station on real ISS

collectSPACE.com — It took more than 200 astronauts from 12 countries more than a dozen years to build the International Space Station (ISS). Satoshi Furukawa, an astronaut from Japan, matched that feat in just about two hours — and he did it all while aboard the orbiting outpost itself. It helped that his space station was made out of LEGO. "It was a great opportunity for me to have built the LEGO space station," Furukawa, a Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency (JAXA) flight engineer, told collectSPACE.com in an interview after he returned to Earth. "I enjoyed building it." For more www.collectspace.com Video credit: NASA/LEGO

Earth As You've Never Seen It... in 1080p

Watch this and other space videos at SpaceRip.com Some of the most striking Earth images ever made... from Landsat. Since the space age began over five decades ago, we have endeavored to travel beyond Earth to discover its origins, and test our own mettle in hostile alien realms. To see what other planets are made of, and to see to the far corners of the cosmos. Satellites in space have given us ring-side seats in the explosive death of stars, in the formation of stars and planets, in the collision of giant galaxies. And yet some of the most striking views have come when we turned around and looked back at Earth. To see how breathtaking our planet can be, simply select a location. Okay, Australia. To the west, Shoemaker crater is the oldest known impact site. It was formed about 1.7 billion years ago... and is today dotted with colorful salt encrusted lakes. An early explorer followed a series of streams to a large lake in Western Australia. It too was laced with salt, so he named it Lake Disappointment. Now,two views of Russia. Winter in Kamchatka. A volcanic terrain is hidden under snow-covered peaks, while glaciers feed ice into the deep blue Pacific. Here's a cubist collage in Kazakhstan. Windbreaks of densely planted trees border farmlands in winter. Now over to China. A remarkable alluvial fan blossoms across a desolate landscape on the border of the Taklamakan Desert. Nestled at the foot of China's Bogda mountains, is a strange mix of salt lakes and sand dunes, all ...
