Earthship Design Principles

Earthship Biotecture creates buildings that... * Heat and cool themselves naturally via solar/thermal dynamics * Collect their own power from the sun and wind * Harvest their own water from rain and snow melt * Contain and treat their own sewage on site * Produce food in significant quantities * Utilize materials that are byproducts of modern society like cans, bottles and tires www.earthship.com

Earthship Codes, Permits, Regulations and Laws

www.earthship.com What is the purpose of building permits and codes? What permits do I need to build an Earthship? Are there any places where Earthships are prohibited? Do environmental concerns influence codes or are they just based on safety and commerce? How do the countries you've visited compare in terms of their codes? How are you fighting codes in overly regulated areas? If I want to build the latest Earthship model, what is my first step?

Living Sculpture: The Taos Earthships

Directed by Tona Williams (2004) The filmmakers explore the functionality and artistic flair of homes called Earthships in New Mexico. Visits to completed and in-progress structures illustrate how tires, bottles, cans, and earth can create exceptional dwellings. Solar panels, passive solar heating, wind turbines, biodiesel, and rainwater collection also show life "off the grid."

Our Mini Earthship.mpg

We built our mini earthship in 2001 in England. Its not really big enough to be called a real earthship and its not finished off properly, but its still a wonderful building. We call it our Earth-dinghy or Earth-tub ! It is loosely based on the earthship concept of Mike Reynolds.. the garbage warrior ! It stays surprisingly warm inside even in winter and never dips below freezing inside even when its below zero outside.. amazing considering there is only a polythene front. It is made from recycled materials, scrap car tyres and sycamore trees. The kids love it and call it the hobbit house. Earthships are fairly easy to build by people with no building skills and considering the amount of scrap tyres there are in the world, earthships could be an answer to the huge global housing problems.

Basically a teaser...some clips from previous episodes of the Building Communities show with a tour of the beautiful new Phoenix Earthship in Taos, New Mexico. Enjoy, and do see the links for more information, as this is not meant to be an education on Earthships! I hope to post more tours of other Earthships and more of the interview with Biotech Michael Reynolds. He is quite a pioneering, goal-driven man whose innovative biotectural design and systems is changing the world. Note my new website since this editing: tizliz.ning.com

Michael Reynolds Interview Part 1 & Earthship Tours

Innovative & pioneering, his goal-driven biotectural design is changing the world. With a deep grasp on the human aspect in architecture and living styles, architect Michael Reynolds shares his thoughts, and how his now well-known Earthships emerged over the years. He also speaks of our humaness, and the communities he continues to develop in New Mexico. Homes that are totally self-sufficient and take care of their owners, the Earthship design, as you most certainly will see to some degree in this series, embraces the human spirit. This is part 1 of 4: a re-edit of an hour-long TV production for public access TV. This interview was taped in 2003, and I'm more than pleased to finally present it in it's entirity on the web; Youtube limits length of videos, hence the necessary re-edit. I trust you'll watch all 4 parts; Michael Reynolds gives us much food for thought, but better than that: food for action! You will find more information on Earthships at www.earthship.org. Thanks to the office for additional photos. I hope to post the remainder of this series by the 1st of August, 2011! Music in this series is performed by Puzzle of Light, a group from Dayton Ohio; compositions include Veldt & Village and Crescent Moon, composed by Michael & Sandy Bashaw, and Cehn, an improvisation by Michael and Sandy Bashaw and Bob Thompson. Thanks to DATV staffers for assistance: Rick Latimer, Gregory Tucker, Dale Grow, and Patrick Hughes

Michael Reynolds Interview Part 4 & Earthship Tours

The 4th and final part of my interview with Michael Reynolds in 2003, with some additions and re-edits. Since the taping of this interview (indeed, since the 80's when I started following the Earthship news), it's obvious that we've made some progress towards a better way of living on this planet. It is through his efforts (and a little help from other earth angels) that New Mexico passed his Sustainable Development Testing Site Act. Check out what Michael has to say about this, and his latest project EVE, Earthship Village Ecologies, at earthship.com...evolution beyond economics. You can also see Michael's story and the evolution of Earthships in the film Garbage Warrior. Again, many thanks to Michael Reynolds, and to his office for additional photos; and DATV staffers for assistance with the original production in 2003. Music in this series is performed by Puzzle of Light, a group from Dayton Ohio; and Michael & Sandy Bashaw; compositions include Veldt & Village and Crescent Moon, composed by Michael & Sandy Bashaw, and Cehn, an improvisation by Michael and Sandy Bashaw and Bob Thompson.
