The Edible Garden

When we think about gardens, we may imagine green grass, colorful flowers, fresh air and busy bees. But, there are some who also think of delicious dishes. Starting from this coming Saturday, the Botanical Garden in New York will celebrate "The Edible Garden." Anyone with passion for gardening, cooking or just casual summer visits can enjoy adventurous educational tours with gardening experts and well-known chefs. So, what's on the menu? [Toby Adams, Family Garden Manager]: "We have a garden we call the pizza garden. So plants that you might find on top of a slice of pizza are planted in the shape of, you know, a piece of pizza. So we have a basil and oregano, and onions, tomatoes. This provides an opportunity to learn where a tomato comes from, that might end up in a bottle of ketchup." [Toby Adams, Manager, Family Garden]: "It's an opportunity to dig in the dirt. To plant, to water, to harvest and eat." There is one thing, however, that parents should be aware of. [Toby Adams, Manager, Family Garden]: "Oh, usually you know, they don't want to leave necessarily, you know, we ring our bell when the tram arrives to take them back to the gate… they really lose track of the time." So there you go – you have fun, health and education on the same plate. Lia Onely, NTD, New York.

MAUI CHILDREN'S EDIBLE GARDEN (Part One)

Here is another example of a small group of dedicated people making a difference. This informal video was shot on January 20, 2010 on the grounds of the Kihei Elementary School in Maui, Hawaii. Its a first-hand report on a most inspiring project, a childrens edible garden created by volunteers, many of them members of the South Maui Sustainability organization. We begin with a tour of the garden beds and shed and then continue indoors for a chat with teachers about the potential of the garden. The people youll see have created the opportunity for the children to plant an edible garden and watch it grow. They are Kathy Becklin (SMS, Master Gardener, in blue); Nio Kindla (garden caretaker and professional chef, in black); Lorna Sass (cookbook author, blogger, photographer, and passionate plant lover, in black and pink); Kirk Surry (SMS volunteer, in grey). Later, youll hear from Sharon Castile (third grade teacher, in green stripes); Alana Kaupuiki (second grade teacher, in grey and black stripes); Roberta Kokx (third grade teacher, in black). Edible Garden in Raised Beds - May 2009

I love gardening with my kids! :) Trying to grow as much as I can in the limited SUNNY spots in my backyard. What I'm growing in the raised bed that wraps around my back porch: pole beans, bush beans, carrots, radishes, zucchini, summer squash, cherry tomatoes, heirloom (Mr. Stripey) tomatoes, rosemary, basil, 1 mammoth sunflower, peas, and marigolds (for pest control). What I'm growing in the 4' x 8' bed: onions and just planted green peppers.
