Ed and Lorraine Warren discuss general principles of what to do when a ghost is seen. Ed sums this up as a process of asking in the name of God if there is some way you could help. If so, the more positive ghost will more likely seek what is wanted. It started at about four o'clock in the morning one day. Diane saw a man standing in her home, in full detail and sort of opaque, wearing jeans, a flannel shirt, and with a scruffy hairdo. One item that stands out is the Raggedy Ann doll that was possessed by a demon posing as a six year-old girl, thus encouraging more of a connection between its owner and the demon. The possessed doll continues its evil in the museum, even causing a sizeable homicide detective to flee the room in terror. There are other items such as the piano that plays itself, African fertility dolls, and pieces of the wreckage of Flight 409. A demon possessed a young boy, David, and was causing his family great stress. Wanting to help, a friend, Arnie Johnson, described by Ed as, "...very polite, a very good living young man -- very hard working." One night, Arnie grew so frustrated that he challenged the demons to take possession of him and leave young David alone. Needless to say, they did, and with a vengeance. Confronting the possession of Arnie required six Catholic priests, including three from the Vatican. Although the 'normal' Arnie showed tremendous respect for these men of the cloth, they feared him, or more pointedly, the demons that possessed him. Multiple exorcisms proved unsuccessful and the priests knew this story would end in tragedy. The story begins when Addie and her family first bought the home for a significant discount. In this old home along a very old New England route, many mysterious events happened. The family would hear footsteps in the attic, would come downstairs in the morning or return home to find all the doors and windows open. Ed Warren notes that any renovations to a home can be enough to trigger supernatural phenomena, which may have been partly to blame for the family's troubles in this home; however the haunting had been reported for thirty years previous to this case. The events started in the attic, which had been locked for years. The phenomena then began occurring in other parts of the home, and even impacting Addie and her family directly. Ed and Lorraine Warren not only tell, but share psychic pictures and video of the Borley Nun herself, and other activity they captured on film during their visits. Told as few other could, the Warrens once again provide a unique, well-informed view of such phenomena, including what brings it about and how it manifests. The Borley Nun is said to have had an affair with a monk and was thus buried in the walls of the building. Her remains were later removed and buried in nearby Liston Churchyard. The church, dating back to the twelfth century, was later accompanied by a rectory that Rev. Henry Bull built. The Warrens investigated a case on West Pittston, Pennsylvania where Jack and Janet Smurl were the victims of demonic possession. Janet was the first to experience supernatural occurrences in the duplex house. What first started out as voices turned into physical altercations with demons. Electrical fixtures fell from the ceiling, Janet was dragged out of bed, and the family levitated while in bed. Poltergeists, from the German word for 'mischievous spirit', usually manifest in a particular way and in this unique episode, a case of water poltergeist is focused on in-depth, along with some mention rock-throwing poltergeists. Explaining water poltergeists, where there are usually large amounts of water involved that manifests out of seemingly nowhere, the Warrens tell of a particular case they investigated in Saugerties, NY. An extended family lived between two houses not far apart. In the grandfather's home, water would be all over the house in alarming amounts, sometimes inches deep, with no mechanical or logical explanation for it. A familiar theme among haunted houses is how renovations to homes, especially older ones, and tragedies usually beget haunting. That was the case Gail experienced directly. Gail had been doing restorations to a home she lived in, including work to the garden outside. During this time some photographs had been taken of her outside where she was doing the work. These photographs show a woman standing by her side, appearing to look with pleasant interest at what Diane was doing. The Warrens discuss stories of love enduring beyond death, sharing anecdotal and pictorial evidence of such beautiful stories of loved ones seen in ghost form after their death and loved ones in death protecting the loved one who is still living. The main story the Warrens share happens in Hollybush, England, and it involves the spirits of Walter Weaver and Doris May. This story began in 1915, with Walter serving as a soldier in World War I. Walter and Doris had fallen in love prior to Walter entering the war as a conscientious objector who was therefore assigned to drive an ambulance.
