Gabon: Ben Bongo Wins Presidential Elections

Ali Ben Bongo, son of Gabons ruler Omar Bongo was declared the winner of disputed presidential polls in Gabon. [Laure Olga Gondjout, Communications Minister]: I'm satisfied and happy that we won. It's a victory for the Gabonese people. Ali Bongo Odimba has won. I salute his courage because at the beginning nothing would have suggested that he was going to win. He has had hurdles to pass, which he transformed into strengths, and today the figures are there for everyone to accept. However, some unrest was seen over the disputed result and soldiers clashed with opposition supporters in Libreville on Thursday (September 3). French media reported looting and rioting in Port Gentil. One local resident said prisoners had been freed from a local jail and set fire to a petrol station. The interior ministry announced that Ben Bongo scored nearly 42% of the vote, ahead of Andre Mba Obame and Pierre Mamboundou. Ben Bongos rivals accuse him of rigging the results, and say they will protest against the outcome. Security forces earlier used tear gas to disperse hundreds of opposition supporters who held an overnight sit-in on a square near the election commission in the capital Libreville. [Opposition Supporter]: "They started to shoot, to shoot with tear gas canisters at us. I never expected anything like this to happen. It came very suddenly. Just like that, they started to shoot at people and a bullet touched me on the head and I found myself on the ground. Analysts say Ben Bongo now ...

Gabon: Tight Security Planned for Election Day

Gabons voters will go to polls on Sunday August 30th to choose their new leader. Some three thousand polling booths around the country will be placed under guard. The interior ministry requested voters return to their home after casting their ballot. Accusations of poll-fixing and tensions between rival factions could flare as the result is announced early next week. The front-runner is Omar Bongos son Ali Ben Bongo. His victory would be welcomed by markets as a sign that investor-friendly policies will continue, but critics view it as a move to the dynastic rule. During Omar Bongos reign, the country became one of the most stable in a volatile region, but critics accuse him of profiting personally from oil investment. Ali Bongo promised to raise living standards and diversity from oil, and encouraged people to go and vote. [Ali Ben Bongo, Presidential Candidate]: Come out on August 30. If we win this match [the elections], then we can prepare to support our panthers on September 5. They will win and they will bring us the world cup. Most of Bongo's rivals are campaigning on a mix of anti-corruption and social justice platforms. Twenty two opposition presidential candidates are competing for the presidential mandate. Former presidential candidate Pierre Mamboundou of the opposition Union of Gabonese People was among the candidates. [Wenceslas Mamboundou, Political Analyst]: I think that the Gabonese people are waiting for a change that there is a change in the politics, a ...
