A Delta Air Lines Boeing 747 diverted to the Pacific Ocean's remote Midway Atoll last week. That came after a "sudden and very serious windscreen crack ... appeared before the pilots while it was flying between Honolulu and Osaka," reports Ben Sandilands in his Plane Talking blog. After the windshield cracked, the Delta crew opted to divert to the 7900-foot runway at Henderson Field on Midway's Sand Island. The Aviation Herald, which focuses on airline safety-related incidents, notes the aircraft then "hit two birds while on approach to Henderson Airfield causing damage to a flap (but) continued for a safe landing about one hour after the windshield cracked." The flight -- Delta Flight 277 -- was en route from Honolulu to Osaka, Japan, at the time of the incident. It landed at Midway around 5:40 pm local time, according to the Honolulu Star-Advertiser. "We don't usually land planes during the daylight hours when we have nesting albatross on the ground because of bird strike hazards," Sue Schulmeister of the US Fish and Wildlife Service says to Hawaii's KITV-TV. "But we didn't have a choice in this case because they needed to land because of their cracked windshield." "The pilots were -- needless to say -- thrilled that Midway was here that they could land this aircraft," Schulmeister adds to Hawaii's KHON 2 TV. This video was shot on Dec 14th after a hydraulic line failure in our 404 Titan forced us to make an emergency landing with the gear up. The emergency blow down bottle had a valve malfunction as well so there was no option available from that point on other than to find a place to sit it down. At the end of the slide down the runway there was a small fire on-board which I extinguished before exiting the aircraft with my crew member closely on my six . I'd like to send my thanks out to my crew member, the engineers in Wichita and to the ground crew mechanics at Mountain Home Airport in Arkansas for their assistance in relaying the communications with the engineers at Cessna, and for their mechanical knowledge that they shared with us during this unusual situation we found ourselves in. A Philippine Airlines jumbo jet declared an emergency because of a possible blown tire, but the plane was able to land safely at Los Angeles International Airport. The pilot initially descended to a low altitude so a police helicopter could inspect the tire's condition, then pulled up again and circled before landing. The Boeing 747 then touched down smoothly around 9 pm Friday. The aircraft idled on the runway as fire trucks and other ground crews surrounded it. It turns out that two tires had blown. after takeoff, the landing gear didn't come up properly. Since the plane can't make the transcontinental trip with the gear deployed, they had to dump fuel for 3 hours over the Mediterranean. The gear had no problem staying down. It had a problem coming up. This means that this landing was pretty much a normal landing. The only concern was the off chance that there was a problem with the gear inasmuch as it may collapse. But that was a very far-off chance

Following unsuccessful troubleshooting the crew decided to divert to Tehran's Mehrabad Airport where a low approach confirmed the nose gear was not extended. The crew subsequently performed a landing without the nose gear on runway 29L at about 16:00L (12:30Z) and came to a stand still on both main gear and the nose of the aircraft. The aircraft was evacuated, no injuries occurred. The airplane is the B-17 Flying Fortress known as the "Liberty Belle." All seven people on board reportedly escaped and survived this event, without injury, but the aircraft appears to be a total loss. It made an emergency landing and burned in a cornfield at about 10 am, Monday morning, June 13, near Aurora Municipal Airport outside Chicago. The B-17 had departed from Aurora and soon after the pilot reported a fire on board. Several residents said they saw the plane flying low trailing smoke and flames prior to the emergency landing. The field was about five miles away from the airport. The "Liberty Belle" was once owned by the New England Air Museum in Connecticut. The Liberty Foundation of Florida acquired the aircraft in 1992and the aircraft had been flying since 2004. The B-17 was at Aurora to participate in a Salute to Veterans over the weekend.

I am sure that you are wondering why this flight was an emergency landing........ well the PR102 flight was intended to fly to Los Angeles, California, but a few hours into the flight the Pilots experienced toxic fumes in the cockpit and upper deck. Due to this the nearest airport that would allow the plane to land was Sapporo International Airport, a smaller sized airport in the north of Japan. After a day in Sapporo, the source of the fumes was identified as a gas leak somewhere in the cockpit. I was able to talk with the captain of the flight and he told me that on the landing in the video that you are about to see, he did not have any assistance when landing because the electric power had been turned off because of fear of a fire. The next day the plane was fixed and was able to take off from Sapporo on flight PR902 heading to Los Angeles.
