How to Be an Entrepreneur

Wondering how to be an entrepreneur? Michael Gerber's "The E-Myth" uncovered just what it means to be an entrepreneur and how to start a business if it turns out you're not one. Now we're breaking it down for you Epipheo-style! You are amazing at your job. And so one day you had an epiphany: Why am I working for some dude who I don't even like that much when I could start my own business? Congratulations--you're ready to be an entrepreneur! Hold it right there muchacho--starting a business doesn't actually make you an entrepreneur. And like many so-called entrepreneurs, you'll soon find yourself working 15-hour days. You'll be hiring the wrong people and getting frustrated trying to manage them. And you won't know how to fix the systems that make a great business grow. Suddenly you'll realize you didn't create a business--you just created yourself a new job, and this new job kinda sucks. Are you an entrepreneur, technician or manager? Let us know in the comments! [Recorded: March 10, 2009] Bob Metcalfe led invention, standardization, and commercialization of the Ethernet local-area networking system for personal computers (PCs). He graduated from Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) in 1969 with bachelor's degrees in electrical engineering and industrial management. At Harvard University in 1970, he earned his master's degree in applied mathematics. In 1972, Metcalfe joined the Xerox Palo Alto Research Center (PARC). He worked in the Computer Science Laboratory led by Jerry Elkind, Bob Taylor, Butler Lampson, and Chuck Thacker, who were developing early PCs. Metcalfe, in collaboration with David Boggs, invented and developed the Ethernet local-area network (LAN) and its system of packet protocols, which have proliferated and evolved to become today's Internet plumbing. In 1979, Metcalfe founded 3Com Corporation to promote "computer communication compatibility." 3Com initially developed PC LAN products based on emerging UNIX, TCP/IP, and Ethernet standards, went public in 1984, and grew into a billion-dollar networking company. In addition, Metcalfe served as the "marriage broker" who convinced DEC, Intel, and Xerox (DIX) to work together to promote Ethernet as an open standard. Google Tech Talks March 12, 2009 ABSTRACT "Billions of Entrepreneurs: How China and India are Reshaping Their Futures and Yours" Removing half a billion people from poverty and into the productive workforce will profoundly affect on the world economy. India and China are doing just that with insane growth rates and lots of what used to be American jobs: China is the factory floor and India the back-office, software shop. China is top-down party driven. India is a messy, vibrant democracy. This may be the complementary duo that changes the world. Including your world. Come hear Professor Tarun Khanna in a discussion about his book, Billions of Entrepreneurs: How China and India are Reshaping Their Futures and Yours. Called well worth reading by The Economist and entertaining by the Financial Times, Khanna's book shows how Chinese and Indian entrepreneurs are creating change through new business models. Speaker: Tarun Khanna Tarun Khanna is the Jorge Paulo Lemann Professor at the Harvard Business School, where he has studied and worked with multinational and indigenous companies and investors in emerging markets worldwide. He joined the faculty in 1993, after obtaining an engineering degree from Princeton University (1988) and a Ph.D. from Harvard (1993), and an interim stint on Wall Street. During this time, he has served as the head of several courses on strategy and international business targeted to MBA students and senior executives at Harvard. His new book, Billions ...
