The Molossian royal house of Epirus

A consice history of the Molossian royal house of Epirus. The Molossians were a Greek tribe of ancient Epirus. They claimed to be descendents of Molossus, one of the three sons of Neoptolemus, son of Achilles and Hector's wife Andromache. According to Greek mythology, following the sack of Troy, Neoptolemus and his armies settled in Epirus where they joined the local Dorian Greek population and displaced the barbarian tribes to the North. Molossus inherited the kingdom of Epirus after the death of Helenus, son of Priam and Hecuba of Troy, who had married his erstwhile sister-in-law Andromache after Neoptolemus' death. Olympias, the mother of Alexander the Great, was a Molossian princess. The most famous member of the Molossian dynasty was Pyrrhus a cousin of Alexander. The Molossians were also known for their vicious hounds which were used by shepherds to guard their flocks. Phyrrus of Epirus - Battle of Heracle

hey guys, this is another video about a real battle. This one is the first conflict between Phyrrus of Epeiros and the romans. I hope you enjoy it ;) History: Pyrrhus didn't march against the Romans while he was waiting for his allies' reinforcements. When he understood that reinforcements were not coming, he decided to fight the Romans on a plain near the river Siris (modern Sinni), between Pandosia and Heraclea. Pyrrhus took up position there and waited. Before the fight he sent diplomats to the Roman consul, proposing that he could arbitrate the conflicts between Rome and the population of south Italy. He promised that his allies recognised him as a judge and demanded the same from the Romans. The Romans denied his request, and entered the plains on the right of the Siris river where they set up camp. It is unknown how many troops Pyrrhus had left in Tarentum, but he probably had about 25-35000 troops with him at Heraclea. He took up position on left bank of the Siris, hoping that the Romans would have difficulty crossing the river, which would allow him more time to prepare his attack. He set up some light infantry units near the river to let him know when the Romans began to cross, and planned first to attack them with his cavalry and elephants. Valerius Laevinus had about 30000 soldiers under his command, including many cavalry, peltasts, and spearmen. It would be the first time in history that two very different juggernauts of war clashed: the Roman Legion, and the ...

The Heart of Epirus: Byzantine Orthodoxy

The song is ΠIΓENA TO ΔPOMO ΔPOMO - Pigena to dromo dromo from Guardians of Hellenism Vol. 8 Epirus. Epirus (Ήπειρος), a region that is divided between Albania in the north and Greece in the south, has always been a bastion for Byzantine Orthodox Christianity. Emperor Justinian I (Ιουστινιανός) dedicated the city of Ioannina (Ιωάννινα) to John the Apostle. When Byzantium fell to the Crusaders, the Despotate of Epirus preserved the Byzantine legacy, keeping alive the Orthodox faith as far north as Ardenica in Albania, where George Kastrioti (Skanderbeg) got married in an Orthodox Church, and as far south as Aetolia-Acarnania (Αιτωλοακαρνανία). During Ottoman times, Cosmas of Aetolia (Κοσμάς Αιτωλός) led an Orthodox revival all over Epirus. Seen here are the numerous churches and monasteries that give Epirus its Orthodox Christian identity. In Arta (Άρτα), there is Agios Vassilios and Panaghia Parigoritissa. In Preveza (Πρέβεζα), there is Ano Louros St. Nicholas Sklivanis. In Thesprotia (Θεσπρωτία), there is the Koimesis of Paramythia. In Ioannina (Ιωάννινα), there are the most. There is the Monastery of Makrialexi in Lavdani, Pogoni, the Monastery of St. Nicholas in Metsovo, the Church of Elefthero village, in Konitsa, the Monastery of Sistrouni in Lakka Souli, the Monastery of Kipina in Tzoumerka. In North Epirus (Βόρειος Ήπειρος), we see the churches of Argyrokastro (Αργυρόκαστρο), which is called Gjirokastër by Albanians and Ljurocastru by Vlahs. In Korytsa (Κορυτσά ...

Epirus and its Albanian affiliation.

"The Greeks call those people Illyrians who occupy the region beyond Macedonia and Thrace from Chaonia and Thesprotia to the river Ister (Danube). This is the length of the country. Its breadth is from Macedonia and the mountains of Thrace to Pannonia and the Adriatic and the foot-hills of the Alps. Its breadth is five days' journey and its length thirty -- so the Greek writers say. The Romans measured the country and found its length to be upward of 6000 stades and its width about 12002 APPIAN, The Foreign Wars ( The Illyrian Wars) Ill. 1.1 "The Hellenic troops with him consisted of the Ambraciots, Leucadians, and Anactorians, and the thousand Peloponnesians with whom he came; the barbarian of a thousand Chaonians, who, belonging to a nation that has no king, were led by Photius and Nicanor, the two members of the royal family to whom the chieftainship for that year had been confided. With the Chaonians came also some Thesprotians, like them without a king, [6] some Molossians and Atintanians led by Sabylinthus, the guardian of king Tharyps who was still a minor, and some Paravaeans, under their King Oroedus, accompanied by a thousand Orestians, subjects of King Antiochus and placed by him under the command of Oroedus. [7] There were also a thousand Macedonians sent by Perdiccas without the knowledge of the Athenians, but they arrived too late." Thucydides, The Peloponnesian War 2.80.1 "Now Hecataeus of Miletus says of the Peloponnesus that before the time of the Greeks ...

Ήπειρος - Epirus - Απειρώταν (English Version)

Special thanks to HostonParton for making this clip. Epirus has been an integral part of Greece ever since antiquity. Northern Epirus is Hellenic and despite of all successive Ottoman Turkish and Turkalbanian Shqiptar occupation of this land for many centuries now. Native Greek Epirotes remain exploited and oppressed at throughout Northern Epirus. Shqiptars are not native to Epirus, although many were Epirotes and also Greek before they become Turkish and Ottoman Shqiptar or ''ethnic'' Albanian. -Epirus belongs to native Epirotes, Greek, Vlachs and Arvanites. -Long live patroan Hellenism! Long live Northern Epirus!

Greek polyphonic song from epirus (Parakalamos area)... from: www.epcon.gr The picture was sent to me, with a dedication from my aunt (letters written by hand):it has high emotional worth to me! It shows a ritual in epirus: "At Yiromeri on Easter Monday the favourite dances of the dead relatives are performed on top of their graves, 1975 (photo Spyros Meletzis)" It is an ancient ritual for sure! Through pentatonic music and dances they try to resurrect the dead from Hadis (underworld)! Polyfoniko moiroloi apo omada gynaikon parakalamou, ipiros!
