Listeners familiar with her stunning 2008 Heads Up International debut, Esperanza, and her best-selling 2010 release Chamber Music Society, were well aware that the young bassist, vocalist and composer from Portland, Oregon was the real deal, with a unique and style-spanning presence, deeply rooted in jazz yet destined to make her mark far beyond the jazz realm. That judgment was confirmed on February 13, 2011, when Spalding became the first jazz musician to receive the GRAMMY® Award for Best New Artist. On March 20th, 2012, Heads Up International, a division of Concord Music Group, gives us Spalding's latest release, Radio Music Society, her most diverse, ambitious and masterful recital yet. 11 songs are accompanied by conceptual short films, which further express Esperanza's inspiration and story behind each track. Shot in various locations including New York City; Barcelona, Spain; and Portland, Oregon; all videos will be available to purchasers of Radio Music Society as a digital download or a DVD on the deluxe version. Radio Music Society is a companion, rather than a sequel, to Spalding's previous disc, which reached No. 1 on the Billboard Contemporary Jazz Chart. "Originally I thought it would be fun ...

Esperanza Spalding - Overjoyed

One of the most exciting new figures in jazz, Esperanza Spalding is a wildly talented and stylistically eclectic young bassist, vocalist and composer. A past side-woman for Herbie Hancock, Pat Metheny, Joe Lovano, Regina Carter and many others, Spalding has earned a well-deserved reputation for stretching the jazz idiom into thrilling new territory. Her new project, Chamber Music Society, floats the spontaneity and intrigue of improvisation over sweet and angular string trio arrangements. Esperanza Spalding - Overjoyed

Esperanza Spalding is an American jazz bassist and singer. Spalding had intended to play cello but discovered the bass during a one year stint at age 14 at the prestigious performing arts high school, The Northwest Academy, to which she had won a scholarship. Spalding left high school at 16 and after completing her GED enrolled on a music scholarship in the music program at Portland State University, where she remembers being "the youngest bass player in the program." Although she lacked the training of her fellow students, she feels that her teachers nevertheless recognized her talent and she decided to instead apply to Berklee College of Music on the encouragement of her bass teacher and did well enough in her audition to receive a full scholarship. Almost immediately after graduation from college, in 2005, Spalding was hired by Berklee College of Music, becoming one of the youngest professors in the institution's history. In this video, she performs the Stevie Wonder hit "Overjoyed" at the White House before a live audience that included President Obama and wife Michelle.

Over the decades, so much of the strength in the African American community has seeded from resistance and endurance. I wanted to address the part of our heritage spanning back to pre-colonial Africa and the elements of Black pride that draw from our connection to our ancestors in their own land. I particularly wanted to create something that spoke to young boys.

Esperanza Spalding - Morning

This is Esperanza Spalding's newest track, called Morning, and it is a great song and recording. It is available now as a bonus track on the vinyl edition of Esperanza's Chamber Music Society album. It is listed on the album liner notes as a preview of the Radio Music Society, Esperanza's new CD coming out March 20, 2012. It is not on the track listing for that CD, but it is from the same sessions. It is a song with with sexy lyrics, about two people spending the night together, sung by Esperanza in a sultry, but disciplined voice. Musically, it is very interesting, combining Jazz with an experimental rock sound, reminiscent of the Beatle's Revolver. Even though there is a lot of instrumentation in the mix, Esperanza's upright bass can be heard distinctly with some very interesting fills. If this track represents what we can look forward to with the Radio Music Society album, Esperanza will have yet another creative and exciting record to offer her fans.

She is the 2005 recipient of the prestigious Boston Jazz Society scholarship for outstanding musicianship. At only 21 years of age, she's most similar to what is known as a "total musician." NPR Music Tiny Desk Concert: Esperanza Spalding

The bassist and vocalist Esperanza Spalding conceived of Chamber Music Society as an intimate experience, a close musical exchange between a small group of friends. If it was intimacy she wanted, she got her wish: Performing three songs in the constraints of Bob Boilen's workspace ensures that all of her supporting players were nice and cozy.
