Audi is making it quite a news day for itself. This time the premium brand is releasing this promotional video for the Audi A1 e-tron - a nearly all-electric variant of its compact hatch. The A1 e-tron comes with an electric motor producing 75 kW (102 PS) of power (45 kW / 61 PS continuous) and 240 Nm (177 lb-ft) of torque (150 Nm / 111 lb-ft continuous) juiced by a 12 kWh lithium-ion battery pack. The range on the A1 e-tron solely in electric mode is 50 km (31 miles). A range-extending engine helps improve that number to 250 km (155 miles). That range-extender is a 15 kW single-piston rotary engine used to charge the batteries as the car is running. The emissions and fuel-economy numbers look good but they're not zero given the range-extender. Consumption on the European cycle is 1.9 liters/100 km and CO2 emissions are very low 45 g/km. Top speed is 130 km/h and the 0 to 100 km/h sprint takes 10.2 seconds. The video shows the A1 e-tron quietly cruising around town. Audi has announced plans to launch the R8 e-tron in late 2012. Set to battle the Mercedes SLS AMG E-cell, the R8 features four asynchronous electric motors which produce 230 kW (308 hp / 313 PS) and 4500 Nm (3319 lb-ft) of torque. This enables the electric supercar to accelerate from 0-100 km/h in just 4.8 seconds. Power comes from a liquid-cooled lithium-ion battery which sits directly behind the passenger compartment. Thanks to this layout, the R8 e-tron has 42:58 weight distribution which is identical to the R8 5.2 FSI. Furthermore, the 550 kg (1213 lb) battery stores 53 KWh of energy which enables the car to have a range of up to 250 km (155 miles). Once depleted, the battery can be recharged in six to eight hours with a standard household outlet or two and a half hours with a rapid charger. Those fearing the R8's stellar handling will be ruined, can rest assured as Audi informs us the car weighs 1600 kg (3527 lb) and has a 70% rear power basis. However, when a slip occurs, power can be sent to the individual wheels with the most traction. A further extension of this can be seen in the car's torque vectoring capability which allows for "elective acceleration of individual wheels and therefore active distribution of torque." Audi itself has fueled the fire in recent weeks with a teasing reference to its new e-Tron concept. Turns out they may be one and the same, judging from the images that leaked Monday on World Car Fans, Autocar and other Web sites. Although details are still forthcoming, the Audi R8 e-Tron looks set to play in the same arena as the Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG eDrive and the BMW Vision EfficientDynamics, among other green supercars from Europe. The Audi concept looks like a cleaned-up version of the standard R8, with a new front fascia and grille, LED headlamps, new wheels and a restyled rear end. The cockpit is considerably revamped as well. We'll find out in a day or so whether the drivetrain is pure electric or hybrid.

The Detroit Auto Show saw Audis second electronic prototype. Like the two-seater sports car Audi showed off recently in Frankfurt and Los Angeles, the new concept is also named E-Tron. The new E-Tron, with two electric motors in the rear axle (the other e-tron has four motors), is capable of zero to 62 miles per hour in 5.9 seconds, with speed governed at 124 miles per hour.
