20% renewable energy by 2020

Raising the share of renewable energy from 8.5% to 20% in the overall energy consumption is a necessary contribution to the global fight against climate change and towards better control over our energy dependence. The various uses of renewable energy are examined: electricity through wind and hydraulic energies; electricity or heat through geothermal and solar energies; electricity, heat, and biofuel coming from biomass. The EU is a world leader in the use and deployment of technologies that exploit renewable energy sources, providing over 350.000 jobs and an annual turn-over of € 30 billion. Safer chemicals within REACH

More information: ec.europa.eu. New EU rules for the chemical industry -- the REACH package -- are set to improve our health and protect the environment. Obliging companies to register and provide information on the chemicals they use should enable public authorities to identify their properties more quickly and accurately. Particularly severe on toxic products, the new rules will encourage the European chemicals industry to develop new substances that are less harmful for people and the environment. As a result, the sector itself should also gain a lead in innovative and sustainable technologies.

AIDS remember me?

www.aids-remember-me.eu 740000 people in the EU today have HIV/AIDS. One in three is unaware they have it. There is a rise of new infections in the EU and neighbouring countries. An EU survey reveals that in Europe less and less people know how the disease is transmitted and take the necessary precautions. Condoms are the best way to protect against HIV as well as other sexually-transmitted diseases such as herpes and condylomas. HIV is transmitted via mucus, wounds, used syringes and bodily fluids. Of these bodily fluids only 5 carry the disease from one person to another: blood, sperm, pre-seminal male secretions, vaginal secretions, and mother's milk. Download: ec.europa.eu

The European Anti-Fraud Office

Up and running since June 1999, OLAF is the main organisation protecting the EU's financial interests. The office, based in Brussels, fights fraud, cases of which harm the EU's interests. It also investigates corruption and any other illegal activity inside the institutions of the EU. At the heart of this fight is information: collecting, verifying, and analysing data. This then needs to be passed on to the relevant bodies like the EU institutions, anti-fraud services in the EU and candidate countries as well as economic organisations and people across Europe. This film, produced in collaboration with the members of the anti-fraud communicators' network, shows OLAF at work. Download: ec.europa.eu

European values -- as easy as winking

European values? What a bold concept. But when ten year old children explain them to you, using words and phrases of the adults, it's not only extremely funny. It's easy-peasy, it's basic, and it comes so naturally. Peace? Dignity of man? Freedom? Protecting the environment? Fair distribution of income? Have the kiddies tell you what it's all about.
