How do our eyes scan across a landscape? Contrary to popular belief, they don't scan smoothly across a scene, they observe a series of images. The eye is capable of panning smoothly however. If something moves in your field of view, your eyes track it smoothly. This has an important effect on our perception of motion. It makes it more difficult to see when objects are accelerating since the eye tracks all motion quite smoothly.

To build this, I was inspired by the EyeWriter open source initiative: "...a low-cost eye-tracking apparatus & custom software that allows graffiti writers and artists with paralysis resulting from Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis to draw using only their eyes". (www.eyewriter.org) Alternatively, the instrument can be controlled using the mouse pointer (MouseHarp version). Then the free software camera mouse (http can be used to control the instrument with head movements. Any technology that can take control of the mouse pointer can be used in order to control the instrument. That way the mouseHarp could be an appropriate instrument for many cases of people with physical disabilities. The mouseHarp version is completely independent from the eyeWriter project. Combining the mouseHarp source with the source of the eyeWriter project, we get the eyeHarp! A low-cost gaze controlled musical instrument! Both versions are free and open source. The main contribution of this project is the design of an appropriate interface to play music using any eye tracing device. Sounds, images and other types of ambient events can be triggered appropriately according to the currently read position. Text 2.0 is interactive, but without the need of explicit control. Automatic Human Visual Attention Modeling for Personalized Web Services. AdSence Heatmap generation using computer vision only. Example of an eyetracking "heatmap" that shows how much users are likely to look at different parts of a video. Areas where users looked the most are colored red-black; the yellow-green areas indicate fewer fixations, followed by the least-viewed blue areas. Gray areas didn't attract any fixations. No expensive eye tracking studies needed. Both low level (color, edge, texture, ...) and high level (text recognition and understanding, object recognition and understanding, ) analysis is done. Direction of human attention is computed using 100000 training (human-based) samples. Very fast processing time - less than 1 minute per web page. Accurate and robust (80% compared to eye tracking results on the same database). Tracking of visitors. Automatic website eye gaze tracking and optimization using computer vision only.
