Colombian group FARC 'not defeated'

Claims by the Colombian government that the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia (FARC) is almost defeated are false, according to the sole survivor of an attack by the army which killed the leader of the leftist resistance group. In an exclusive interview to Al Jazeera, Tomas Garcia, the only man to survive the November 4 military assault which killed FARC's top commander Alfonso Cano, said the government is lying to the people. "They should be honest with what is going on," Garcia, a body-guard of the now deceased leader, said. "They don't want to acknowledge that we are still a force. In some areas we have units with 300 and 400 men." The death of Cano was viewed by many as a major blow to FARC, with the hopes of pushing the armed group to start peace talks. Al Jazeera's Teresa Bo reports.

Farc Leader Cano Killed In Military Attack - A pricetag of $3.7m was on Alfonso Cano's head

The head of Colombia's main rebel group, the Farc, has been killed in a military bombing, the defence ministry has said. Alfonso Cano, leader of the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia (Farc), had been the country's top target since September 2010, when the group's military chief was killed. The government offered up to $3.7m (£2.3m) for information that would lead to his capture. "The fingerprints matched," said one senior security official who confirmed the death, adding that the 63-year-old was killed in "a standard military operation" in Cauca state in which ground troops also participated. His killing is the latest in a series of withering blows to Latin America's last remaining leftist rebel army that began in March 2008, when the Farc's foreign minister, Raul Reyes, was killed in a bombing across the border in Ecuador. That same month, the Farc's revered co-founder, Manuel Marulanda, died in a mountain hideout of a heart attack. He was believed to be 78. Late last year government forces killed top commander Mono Jojoy in a bombardment and assault on his camp. Cano's death is a strategic victory for President Juan Manuel Santos who came to office last year promising to keep up a hard-line stance against the guerrillas. The group is on a US list of terrorist organisations and the military campaign, which began in 2002, has been backed by the American administration. Alfredo Rangel, an independent security analyst, said: "There's no leader with the intensity that ...

The FARC Files: Venezuela, Ecuador And The Secret Archive of 'Raul Reyes'

The IISS launched its latest Strategic Dossier The FARC Files: Venezuela, Ecuador and the Secret Archive of 'Raúl Reyes' on Tusday 10 May 2011. The dossier provides unique insights into the thinking and evolution of the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia (FARC). Ingrid Betancourt talks about FARC

Guerillas belonging to the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia, known as FARC, kidnapped Ingrid Betancourt as she campaigned for the Colombian presidency in 2002. She was held captive six years in Colombia's rain forest until she was liberated in 2008 with 14 other hostages in a daring rescue staged by the Colombian army. Listen to her story. Betancourt spoke at Vanderbilt University Nov. 16, 2010. The university's Speakers Committee, a student-run organization, sponsored the event. Betancourt, the longest female hostage held in captivity, has become a global human rights activist meeting with world leaders and campaigning for the release of more than 700 hostages still being held captive by FARC. "I will not feel totally free, not happy, as long as one of my companions remains jailed in the jungle," she has said. During her presidential campaign, she had been a critic of FARC and her platform was built on her promise to curb drug trafficking, corruption and the FARC's methods of kidnapping innocent people. She had met with FARC leaders to encourage them to end these practices before becoming a victim of their rebel tactics. Betancourt has received numerous international awards, including the French National Order of the Legion of Honor, The Prince of Asturias Prize of Concord, The Prize Grinzane Cavour and was nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize. She also received the first Woman of the Year Award 2008 from the World Awards Association for her commitment to democratic ...

Liduine Zumpolle over nieuwe beelden FARC-lid Nijmeijer - Pauw & Witteman
