So, you have a Delta 1400 Series bathtub faucet, and there's water leaking from the spout. You can repair this yourself with no special tools required (just a small flathead screwdriver and a Phillips-head screwdriver) and parts that you can get at a local hardware or plumbing supply store like Lowe's or Home Depot. You can do the repair in five minutes. It may seem daunting to do your own plumbing repairs, but this one is straightforward and easy. If you are lucky, you only need to replace the seats and springs. This is Delta part number RP4993 (Seats & Springs - Repair Kit) and costs around $4. After replacing the seats and springs, if you still have a leak, then you need to replace the entire valve cartridge, Delta part number RP19804 (Valve Cartridge - Repair Kit), which costs around $40. First of all, SHUT OFF YOUR WATER SUPPLY - find the main valve and close it. Turn on the bathtub faucet and let the remaining water drain out. Follow the video to see how to dismantle the faucet. At around 1:35, you can't see it very well, but I'm using the small flathead screwdriver to gently (gently!) pry the valve cartridge out of the brass pipe. Put the screwdriver head between the pipe and the cartridge and carefully nudge it out, maybe with a little twist of the screwdriver. At 2:17, I pop out one of the seat/spring combos. I show how I removed a stuck Moen shower cartridge using an Easy Out tool. I initially attempted to remove the sleeve of the cartridge using a tap and dowel, but I apparently did not have the right size tap, so I searched my toolbox and found a No. 6 easy out that did the trick. This Moen shower valve is 45 years old and hadn't been used in at least a year. The cartridge was stuck due to an accumulation of mineral deposits over time. It is a very common problem.

You can get it at any home improvement store. It comes with the P trap itself. That's what we are looking for. The trap holds water in here so you don't get sewer gas coming up back through. We have a trap adapter mounted here. Essentially all these fittings are slip joint fittings. There is a plastic washer that has a cone shape. it's what seals the pipe. It acts like a compression fitting that will seal this pipe onto that fitting there. These have wings on them so they all need to be hand tightened. You really don't need a wrench for these to fit together properly. Using a wrench would just cause them to break. We have a 6 inch tail piece extension that will go on the bottom of the drain that came with our faucet. That slips into here and everything is adjustable. You have about an inch and a half worth of play in both of these up and down. Everything should go together without cutting anything and just by hand tightening everything.
