The Nation looked to Government but the Government looked away. Nine mocking years with the golden calf and three long years of the scourge! Nine crazy years at the ticker and three long years in the breadlines! Nine mad years of mirage and three long years of despair! Powerful influences strive today to restore that kind of government with its doctrine that that Government is best which is most indifferent. For nearly four years you have had an Administration which instead of twirling its thumbs has rolled up its sleeves. We will keep our sleeves rolled up. We had to struggle with the old enemies of peace‹business and financial monopoly, speculation, reckless banking, class antagonism, sectionalism, war profiteering. They had begun to consider the Government of the United States as a mere appendage to their own affairs. FDR in 1936 and 2008

This is a speech by FDR during his reelection campaign in 1936. I think of this whenever I hear Republican presidential candidates talk about "making health care more accessible and affordable for every American." In FDR's case, the Republicans were claiming they could create and manage the social programs FDR was fostering better than FDR himself. I think everyone knows the Republicans can not be trusted with social programs like universal health care, but they've seen the writing on the wall and desperately want to take the issue away from the liberals and progressives. The GOP (Greedy Old Perverts) can not be trusted with any issue that benefits the poor and middle class. By the way, even though it's not widely known, we are worse off today than we were in 1936 when FDR gave this speech.

On October 31, 1936, President Franklin D. Roosevelt gave a campaign speech before a crowd at Madison Square Garden. The words he spoke could be uttered in our present time. I have edited this just over 30-minute speech down to less than 10 minutes to provide highlights. We need this kind of leadership today.

The first 5 minutes of of a 13 min 42 sec speech delivered on March 12, 1933. When President Franklin D. Roosevelt took office in 1933, one in four Americans was out of work nationally, but in some cities and some industries unemployment was well over 50 percent. Equally troubling were the bank panics. Between 1929 and 1931, 4000 banks closed for good; by 1933 the number rose to more than 9000, with $2.5 billion in lost deposits.

Yesterday, Dec. 7, 1941 - a date which will live in infamy - the United States of America was suddenly and deliberately attacked by naval and air forces of the Empire of Japan. The United States was at peace with that nation and, at the solicitation of Japan, was still in conversation with the government and its emperor looking toward the maintenance of peace in the Pacific. Indeed, one hour after Japanese air squadrons had commenced bombing in Oahu, the Japanese ambassador to the United States and his colleagues delivered to the Secretary of State a formal reply to a recent American message. While this reply stated that it seemed useless to continue the existing diplomatic negotiations, it contained no threat or hint of war or armed attack. It will be recorded that the distance of Hawaii from Japan makes it obvious that the attack was deliberately planned many days or even weeks ago. During the intervening time, the Japanese government has deliberately sought to deceive the United States by false statements and expressions of hope for continued peace. The attack yesterday on the Hawaiian islands has caused severe damage to American naval and military forces. Very many American lives have been lost. In addition, American ships have been reported torpedoed on the high seas between San Francisco and Honolulu. Yesterday, the Japanese government also launched an attack against Malaya. FDR a date which will live in infamy speech

The Infamy Speech was delivered at 12:30 pm on December 8, 1941, by United States President Franklin D. Roosevelt, one day after the Empire of Japan's attack on Pearl Harbor Naval Base, Hawaii. The name derives from the first line of the speech: Roosevelt describing the previous day as "a date which will live in infamy". Within an hour of the speech, Congress passed a formal declaration of war against Japan and officially brought the US into World War II. The address is regarded as one of the most famous American political speeches of the 20th century.[1]
