Shocking video: Troops shoot at female protesters in Ivory Coast

(WARNING: VIDEO CONTAINS GRAPHIC FOOTAGE) At least six women were killed as soldiers backing Ivory Coast's contested president Laurent Gbagbo gunned down female protesters in Abidjan on Thursday. The incident which took place as thousands took part in an all-women march demanding the departure of Laurent Gbagbo. Footage posted on YouTube shows women waving branches in the air in protest as set of successive booms is heard. The crowd of hundreds scatters, then the cameraman pans over the collapsed bodies of at least four women. The incident has prompted a shockwave of criticism. The spokesman for Ivory Coast's military denied the army was involved. He read a statement on state TV late on Friday, calling it a lie spread by the international media. PEACEFUL FEMALE PROTESTORS PENNED IN THE STREET AND MACED!- #OccupyWallStreet

UPDATE: Please consider a suggested donation of $9.17 to our Media Fund to continue our reports from the front line. You can visit our page here: bit.ly ------------- The Other 99 condemns hate speech and violent rhetoric directed at anyone in this video. We remain peaceful. We especially wish to thank all the brave NYPD officers who performed honorably this day. We refuse to allow the actions of a few to smear many. The NYPD has fewer men and women on the streets than in 1992. Their budgets are slashed to 20 year lows. Overtime and pensions are under attack, deserved promotions are delayed because the dept cannot afford the salary increases. This is not justice and The Other 99 stands in solidarity with those who keep us safe, day and night. The NYPD is The Other 99, as well. We continue to peacefully occupy and fight for them... -------------- While on a peaceful march near Union Square in downtown Manhattan, multiple female protestors were penned up in the street by orange mesh baricade, then maliciously maced. The women were peaceful and unarmed. They were secured by barricade with an overwhelming police presence. And they were then sprayed directly in the face with pressurized mace... WeAreTheOther99 continues to peacefully occupy Lower Manhattan to begin a dialogue with the Top 1% with the goal of a peaceful transition of power back to the People. This can no longer be stopped. But be advised, this will not be televised...

"VIRGINITY CHECKS" PERFORMED ON FEMALE PROTESTERS ARRESTED IN EGYPT

Cairo (CNN) -- A senior Egyptian general admits that "virginity checks" were performed on women arrested at a demonstration this spring, the first such admission after previous denials by military authorities. The allegations arose in an Amnesty International report, published weeks after the March 9 protest. It claimed female demonstrators were beaten, given electric shocks, strip-searched, threatened with prostitution charges and forced to submit to virginity checks. At that time, Maj. Amr Imam said 17 women had been arrested but denied allegations of torture or "virginity tests." But now a senior general who asked not to be identified said the virginity tests were conducted and defended the practice. "The girls who were detained were not like your daughter or mine," the general said. "These were girls who had camped out in tents with male protesters in Tahrir Square, and we found in the tents Molotov cocktails and (drugs)." Egypt under fire for 'virginity tests' Mubarak attorney discusses accusations Military 'Justice' in the new Egypt The general said the virginity checks were done so that the women wouldn't later claim they had been raped by Egyptian authorities. "We didn't want them to say we had sexually assaulted or raped them, so we wanted to prove that they weren't virgins in the first place," the general said. "None of them were (virgins)."COPYRIGHT DISCLAIMER UNDER SECTION 107 OF COPYRIGHT ACT OF 1976 ALLOWANCE IS MADE FOR 'FAIR USE" FOR PURPOSES SUCH AS ...

Yemeni Women Protest in Taez

Yemeni women held a demonstration in Sana'a on Monday calling for President Ali Abdullah Saleh to step down. They were protesting against the use of sniper fire in the capital as well as the death of a 52-year-old woman reportedly killed by security forces in the southern city of Taez. protester Akhlaq al Asali said, "Saleh's regime has exceeded all boundaries. It even touched our honor and honor is valued, especially in Yemen. Our country appreciates and respects women all over and from all generations. They killed Aziza the other day, and now they are attacking other female protesters in Taez, Sana'a and other places. Amid the violence which took the death toll in two days to at least 20 people, President Saleh said he expected China and Russia to block UN moves to end his rule. UN Security Council members are considering a resolution expected to urge Saleh to hand over power under a Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) peace plan. China and Russia joined forces to veto a European-sponsored resolution against Syria earlier this month but were not expected to block the resolution on Saleh which is due to go to the Security Council this week. Britain has been drafting the resolution in consultation with France and the United States and circulated it to the full 15-nation Security Council shortly after a closed-door meeting on Oct 11. Police brutally attack Egyptian women, US condemns, with 'Blue Bra Girl' video on Qasr Al-Ainy St

Videos of brutal attacks by Egyptian military police have shown especially disturbing violence towards female protesters. US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton condemned the violence as "shocking" and said it disgraces the Egyptian state. The so-called "blue bra girl" video shows a mob of military soldiers with riot shields and batons viciously attacking defenseless (and in some cases motionless) protesters on Qasr Al-Ainy street near Tahrir Square. In response, thousands of women began protesting in Tahrir square over the treatment of women in Egypt. The Egyptian military has apologised saying what happened was an isolated incident, but Mrs Clinton has expressed her disappointment with the prevalence of discrimination against women in Egyptian society and particularly in politics.

Kettling can be frustrating for the people trapped inside since they are left with nowhere to go and the people who are in place to protect them are holding them captive. Police often use this time to mace and attack people systematically with batons. This technique has been used on crowed for prolonged periods of time and people are left with no food, water, or sanitation.

We are the 99%. And thank you to the medic who flushed my eyes with what I guess what liquid antacid and water, and wiped my eyes with the bandana around his wrist saying, "This was my grandfather's bandana, he got through Korea with this, and that means you're going to get through this." And it helped immensely. Thank you. I'm glad we take care of each other. Just as a quick side note, I want to make clear that in general I support the police force, my mom worked in the justice system for 30 years and I know that for the most part cops are good honorable people doing their jobs, and often they are heroes. But whether these cops were just scared and thinking irrationally or taking out their own misdirected rage, there is no excuse for this violent abuse of their authority. This was wrong and it didn't make anyone safer. Hell, along the same lines, I even support the death penalty, but executing Troy Davis only weakened the integrity of the system that I have, up until yesterday, supported and defended. Pepper spray is a real weapon that hurts like hell and should only be used in the most desperate of situations, not on peaceful protesters that let you push them onto the sidewalk but won't let you corral them into a parking garage. Women defy Haredi bus segregation efforts in Jerusalem & Ramat Gan, Ultra-Orthodox Haredim protest

Protestors boarded buses in Jerusalem and Ramat Gan over the weekend to draw attention to the forced gender segregation on public transportation by members of the Jewish Ultra-Orthodox Haredi minority. Groups of male and female protesters boarded public buses on routes used mainly by the Haredim and sat in mixed groups near the front, sparking heated exchanges. The Ultra-Orthodox Haredim have been criticised for their attempts to segregate men and women on buses, sidewalks, and in other public places. Incidents like the recent sexual harassment of a female soldier in Jerusalem are bringing increased government scrutiny of the Haredi community's influence on Israeli public life. Eyal Ackerman, Head of the Jerusalem Free Israel Movement, had this to say, "We believe that the public sphere in Israel should be open to everybody and today we have minorities, extremist minorities, from the Ultra-Orthodox communities that are trying to force their own way of life and beliefs on the public in Israel, on the seculars, on the modern religious, and we are trying to fight it, and to allow anyone from anywhere to sit wherever he wants on the bus and to walk in any street he wants and to go into any business he wants."

Shocking Video: 'Blue bra' girl brutally beaten by Egypt military

The blog-o-sphere is boiling at the cruel beating of a female protester by Egyptian military police, who continued battling protesters in Tahrir Square on Sunday. The clashes, into their third day now, have left 10 people dead and hundreds injured. The video uploaded on YouTube Sunday reveals the extreme cruelty of the country's law enforcers during the crackdown. The army soldiers in full riot gear have been savagely beating a seemingly unconscious female protester with big sticks, kicking her and stomping on her chest. Security forces lashed out ruthlessly on armless civilians and burned down tents that had been put up by activists outside the parliament building to camp in protest against the military rule. The internet community therefore questions the methods of the military regime who took over power after the ousting of the ex-President Hosni Mubarak in February.
